Amichai?

I absolutely love the name Amichai. It has a good sound (ah-mee-kye), an amazing meaning (“my people are alive”), great namesakes, and it’s even also unique in Jewish communities. The only problem is I can’t find an [name_f]English[/name_f] name for it that I love.

Originally, I had [name_m]Nicholas[/name_m], which I felt worked because they had similar meaning vibes. I’ve decided that I can’t use [name_m]Nicholas[/name_m] though because of very negative associations me and my entire family have with the name. [name_m]Nikolai[/name_m] and [name_m]Nicodemus[/name_m] are also out because of this. Then I thought [name_u]Amos[/name_u] or [name_m]Abraham[/name_m], because they have the “am” sound in them too, but those already have their own Hebrew translations. Then I thought [name_m]Anthony[/name_m] or [name_m]Victor[/name_m], but I can’t picture them on a future son like I can my other top options.

The only one that I’ve thought of so far that I kind of like is [name_m]Adrian[/name_m], but I’m not sure if I love it enough to be able to use it on a real person. I would use Amichai as both the [name_f]English[/name_f] and Hebrew name, but it’s just a bit too obviously Jewish for me to feel comfortable with it.

So berries, any ideas?

Either! [name_f]My[/name_f] current middle name for Amichai is [name_m]Yehuda[/name_m]/Jude but I’m okay with either

I love [name_m]Adrian[/name_m]! It’s my cousin’s name so I can’t use it but it’s so beautiful. I also love [name_m]Anthony[/name_m] but it feels very Catholic/Christian to me so maybe not the best choice for you?

Other options:

Amory/Emory
[name_m]Amias[/name_m]
[name_u]Avery[/name_u]
[name_u]Averell[/name_u]

Amichai is beautiful, though, maybe another idea is to use it as a middle in both [name_f]English[/name_f] and Hebrew and find another name for the first that you feel is more usable?

I like [name_u]Avery[/name_u]! And I did go through a phase where I liked [name_u]Emery[/name_u] for a girl but I’m not sure if it would still work with my other names.

Thanks!

Amichai is a great name! I really love the sound and meaning of it.

Let’s see, [name_f]English[/name_f] names… I’m thinking maybe you would like something that shares some similar letters and/or sounds?

What about…
Amias
Amory
Archer or Archie
Cameron
Charles/Charlie
[name_f]Do[/name_f]minic
Graham
[name_u]Kai[/name_u]
Mack or maybe with a longer form?
Marcus
Miles
[name_m]Willi[/name_m]am

Hope this could help!

I love [name_m]Graham[/name_m], [name_u]Miles[/name_u], and [name_m]William[/name_m], and I wouldn’t have thought to use Amichai as the Hebrew name. Thanks so much!

Amichai is great

Maybe

Malachi
[name_m]Amias[/name_m]
[name_u]Michael[/name_u]
[name_u]Micah[/name_u]
[name_u]Miles[/name_u]

I love [name_m]Malachi[/name_m] and [name_u]Micah[/name_u]/Michael, but those all already have their own Hebrew translations :slightly_frowning_face: I like [name_u]Miles[/name_u] though and [name_m]Amias[/name_m] is nice just not my style.

I grew up in Hebrew School so reading “Amichai” got Am [name_m]Yisrael[/name_m] [name_u]Chai[/name_u] stuck in my head.

Names that could use Amichai as a Hebrew name/are similar/Hebrew names that are similar but less obviously Jewish
[name_m]Amias[/name_m]
[name_m]Ames[/name_m]
[name_u]Asa[/name_u]
[name_m]Hiram[/name_m]
[name_m]Amiel[/name_m]
Amnon
[name_m]Ambrose[/name_m]
[name_u]Archer[/name_u] / [name_m]Archie[/name_m]
[name_m]Amadeo[/name_m] / [name_m]Amadeus[/name_m]
[name_u]Amory[/name_u]
[name_m]Amram[/name_m]
[name_u]Kai[/name_u]

Ha sorry! I like [name_u]Archer[/name_u] as a middle name! And [name_m]Hiram[/name_m] is cool but a bit too out there for me for a first name.

What do you guys think of [name_m]Magnus[/name_m] with the Hebrew name Amichai? It’s a bit of a stretch but it has the same meanings vibes like I had with [name_m]Nicholas[/name_m], and it has am kind of.

[name_m]Magnus[/name_m] with the Hebrew name Amichai is awesome!
עַמִּיחַי is really great. The names don’t have to match up but [name_m]Magnus[/name_m]'s meaning actually does fit with Amichai’s (my great people live).

sorry, dropping by to not be useful at all :joy:

  • i second all of the suggestions
  • as far as i know amichai in hebrew is pronounced ahmee HI, it’s spelled with a ח - עמיחי, from חי - life/live/living/etc and that is definitely a h / r letter only.
  • if you love amichai so much, i say go for it. would it make you feel better if it was perhaps in the middle name spot, or had a nickname to fall back onto? such as amichai jude “aj” in english with amichai yehuda in hebrew. absolutely gorgeous combo by the way.

Haha yeah, I know how it’s really pronounced  I just didn’t really know how to write it out (I pronounce [name_u]Kai[/name_u] and the chai/chi same and I’ve only ever seen [name_u]Kai[/name_u] written out like KYE). So thanks for helping me figure out how to actually explain the pronunciation :joy:

I do love the nickname AJ, thanks!

I could imagine the other name being [name_m]Marc[/name_m], [name_m]Marius[/name_m], [name_u]Maxwell[/name_u] or [name_m]Amaury[/name_m].

I love [name_u]Max[/name_u] and [name_u]Maxwell[/name_u] - thanks!
