I love the name [name]Amos[/name]. My question is does it sound too much like anus?
I’ve never thought of [name]Amos[/name] as sounding like Anus…seriously. It never crossed my mind at all and even now that you’ve mentioned it, I still don’t hear it really.
I think [name]Amos[/name] has a cool sound and you should use it if you love it
Yes. Very much so, yes. I grew up with a boy named [name]Amos[/name]. When we were young, other kids called him “lame-us.” When we got older, he was called “anus.” This went on well into HS. The poor kid didn’t have it in him to stand up for himself, so I guess he just put up with it.
Kids can be mean. There are many names out there that kids/adults can overcome, but I truly believe [name]Amos[/name] has a huge bulls-eye taped to it’s back.
I happen to like [name]Amos[/name], and think it’s a nice, under-used Biblical name… Unfortunately, there’s a reason for that. [name]Don[/name]'t do it. Please.
Haha, gosh… such a shame. I really like the name [name]Amos[/name], but I could see kids calling him anus. I frequently ride in an elevator that is serviced by a man named [name]Amos[/name] Sparks, I see his name written on this inspectors sheet inside the elevator all the time, and I always notice his name, but I have never thought about it sounding like anus. Maybe I personally wouldn’t think anus when I see/hear [name]Amos[/name], but I would not doubt for one second that others would.
I can see it now that you mentioned it. But I totally never thought of it until you brought it to my attention. I’ve never heard of it brought up as a concern for [name]Seamus[/name] and it has the same sound… oh well there’s a suggestion for you if you decide it’s too close!
I never would have made the connection, and I love the name…
I don’t think it’s obvious enough to be a problem. It’s not like naming your daughter [name]Fanny[/name]… and any name can be teased. (Hello, Hairy [name]Kerrie[/name]!)
I think it’s a definite risk and personally I wouldn’t take that chance. It’s a nice name though.
My name is [name]Amy[/name] and my friends called me [name]Amos[/name] all through grade school and middle school. Eventually the boys started calling me anus. It was pretty awful.
Never thought of it but yes…well, the only [name]Amos[/name] I know is Ahh-mose with a soft A not Aye-mose. That way it sounds much less like anus the way an American says anus.
I don’t know if enforcing the Ahh mose pronunciation would be easy or if you would like the sound?
I do think it’s a big risk, and I know a guy named [name]Angus[/name] who experienced the same thing going up. [name]Ambrose[/name] and [name]Asa[/name] are similar in feel to me and maybe a little safer. Also [name]Amias[/name].
I went to school with an [name]Amos[/name] and unfortunately he hated the name. It isn’t a bad name, but kids can be and are cruel sometimes. Though I believe a lot of it has to do with the individual child and their personality. Some names are just as easy to make fun of, but if it’s on a popular kid, it doesn’t seem to happen. [name]Alas[/name], that’s impossible to predict. Here’s a page that may shed a little light for you. It’s a survey of 48 people actually named [name]Amos[/name] and shows what they think about it. While 68% said they like it a lot, a combined 68% also said they were occasionally/always bullied because of it. And there are some explanations as to the type of bullying.
wow this was super helpful! Thanks! Although I love the name, I’m going to pass on it. sigh. Back to the message boards to find the perfect name…
