Andrew

[name_f]Do[/name_f] you think the name [name_m]Andrew[/name_m] will take a nosedive in the light of recent events.

I honestly don’t think so. It’s been a very well used name for 100+ years and has so many associations it took me a couple of moments to parse out what [name_m]Andrew[/name_m] you were referring to I’m assuming [name_f]British[/name_f] [name_m]Prince[/name_m]?[name_f][/name_f]. For that reason alone I’m sure it will be used for a long time to come, besides the many of thousands of those who already have the name and their children and grandchildren who may be named in honour of them one day. I can see for the next couple of years it taking a bit of a dip in use? Its already been on a downwards trend since the 90s, but in the US it’s never been out of the top 100 and in [name_m]Britain[/name_m] & [name_m]Wales[/name_m] its been on a similar downwards trend too, but is still in the 300s. But it’s also a solid, classic name so I wouldn’t be surprised if it didn’t make any noticeable difference in usage since it’s already on a slow decline anyway, and again, has so many other famous bearers

The name is going out of fashion anyway, at least it is here in the UK (ranked #314[name_f][/name_f], used 142 times), so I think it might be hard to judge if any further decline is due to [name_m]Andrew[/name_m] Mountbatten-Windsor. Unless it really plummets by a few hundred places, of course.

I don’t think the AM-W connection will cause the name to completely nosedive though. It’s a name that I think many people have other associations with, it isn’t a ā€˜one person name’. For me personally, my mum and dad each have a brother named [name_m]Andrew[/name_m], so my own association is with my two uncles. When I hear/see the name, they are the first thing I think of. I also think of [name_m]Andrew[/name_m] [name_m]Garfield[/name_m]. And as @GreenEyes375[name_f][/name_f] has said, there are many other famous bearers.

No. [name_m]Andrew[/name_m] is a classic name. I don’t think it will affect it at all. [name_f]My[/name_f] mother’s maiden name was [name_m]Andrew[/name_m], and her father, [name_m]Cecil[/name_m], was generally known as [name_m]Andy[/name_m], so for me, that’s my main association with the name.

Honestly, I totally forgot about what the association even was until I opened Helen’s spoiler, but I second everything she said.

I think it’s a lovely name and there are so many excellent namesakes given its long-time status as a classic.

If you love the name, you definitely don’t need to feel any stress in using it. :white_heart:

No. [name_m]Andrew[/name_m] is too classic and well-used to suffer because of only one famous bearer.

I’m not sure where you live, but in the UK and [name_f]Ireland[/name_f] it’s been trending down for years [name_f][/name_f]- not so much because of the former royal but because it was extremely popular from around the 1960s-1990s so it’s something of a ā€œdad nameā€ now.

[name_f][/name_f]

I think [name_m]Andrew[/name_m] is simply too common to be tainted by one bad association.

I don’t think so. When I hear that name I first think of [name_m]Andrew[/name_m] [name_m]Garfield[/name_m], [name_m]Andrew[/name_m] [name_m]Lloyd[/name_m] [name_m]Webber[/name_m], and even the mesmerising [name_f]Julie[/name_f] [name_m]Andrews[/name_m]. :pink_heart:[name_f][/name_f] The good absolutely outweighs the bad so to speak.

I agree, I don’t think [name_m]Prince[/name_m] [name_m]Andy[/name_m] will have done it any favours but it wasn’t exactly trending before all that came out. A solid classic, hovering low down the popularity charts but never totally disappearing.

Maybe in another ten years or so with the rising interest in ā€˜boomer’ names like [name_f]Janet[/name_f], [name_f]Linda[/name_f] etc it will start to come back?

It doesn’t feel distinctive enough to be tied exclusively to one person, if that makes sense? It’s a well-used classic borne by multiple well-known people and while I can think of two bad [name_m]Andrews[/name_m] right off, I can also think of several good [name_m]Andrews[/name_m] and several who feel fairly neutral? So while I don’t think it’s going to leap up the charts, I don’t think it will fall away?
