Ann vs Anne

I posted a poll yesterday, and I really expected only one or two votes for Ann. But since it seems there are a few more than that, I am genuinely curious why.

So which spelling do you prefer and why? Does the -e make Anne look more complete to you? Does the fact that your mother have the middle name Ann make you prefer that spelling? Whatever your reason, I’d like to know. Share here, if you please.

I prefer [name_u]Anne[/name_u] and it does look more complete, but I think [name_f]Ann[/name_f] looks sweet and a little spunky

I prefer [name_u]Anne[/name_u], but I actually don’t mind [name_f]Ann[/name_f]. [name_u]Anne[/name_u] feels more classic, while [name_f]Ann[/name_f] is a bit retro (in a charming way!)

Also, [name_u]Anne[/name_u] [name_f]Shirley[/name_f] had a definite impact on my preference of [name_u]Anne[/name_u] vs. [name_f]Ann[/name_f]

I used [name_f]Ann[/name_f] for my daughter’s MN when we could have used [name_f]Ann[/name_f] or [name_u]Anne[/name_u] as there are different spellings on both sides of the family. We went with [name_f]Ann[/name_f] though because that’s how my middle name is spelt and our daughter has a hyphenated surname so didn’t see the point in making her name any longer- even if only by a letter.

[name_u]Anne[/name_u] feel more complete to me. Also for some reason [name_f]Ann[/name_f] feels more dated to me while [name_u]Anne[/name_u] feels more classic and fresh again.

I do absolutely love both spellings! Most days are [name_u]Anne[/name_u] days but occasionally I like [name_f]Ann[/name_f] more  I do agree with @Kipperbo1 that [name_f]Ann[/name_f] does feel a bit more dated though.

If I were to use it, though, I would use [name_u]Anne[/name_u] as I do have a bad association with [name_f]Ann[/name_f] (even if I do still like it).

[name_m]Hi[/name_m] there.

I strongly prefer [name_u]Anne[/name_u]. But I don’t have a great reason why. I guess it does just look more complete & classic. I knew an [name_f]Ann[/name_f] growing up who was kind of meh, so I didn’t like the name period for a long time. But then I’ve met a few Annes since who are nice ladies, & here we are!

[name_f]Hope[/name_f] this helps.

I prefer [name_f]Ann[/name_f] as I like the visual simplicity of it, and it feels more spunky to me. Tbh I think [name_u]Anne[/name_u] feels a little stuffy. I don’t mind [name_u]Anne[/name_u], though, and in some combos or sibsets I do prefer it.

I prefer [name_u]Anne[/name_u], bc it looks complete, it was almost my mn, and because of [name_u]Anne[/name_u] [name_f]Shirley[/name_f]. [name_m]Even[/name_m] though I do know some great Anns, it just looks unpleasing to me.

[name_u]Anne[/name_u]! It looks more complete and international to me than [name_f]Ann[/name_f].

anne looks more complete, but ann is less common and sort of more interesting. i think both of them are boring, though.

Definitely! That’s why I’ve generally always preferred Anne myself.

But lately I’ve been questioning if Anne Shirley was wrong for once… I’m not sure I don’t like the simplicity of Ann.

Despite your profile pic of Princess Ann?

(I only say that because, for me, a lovable character often makes it hard for me to dislike her name.)

yes… to be fair though i don’t think her name suits her .

Curious, do you like [name_f]Anya[/name_f] better for her, since she goes by that most of the movie?

yes, i think that works much better!

[name_u]Anne[/name_u] looks more complete to me! Also [name_f]Ann[/name_f] kinda has a 50s vibe while [name_u]Anne[/name_u] feels more timeless. Not sure why!

I strongly prefer [name_u]Anne[/name_u]! Anne-with-an-e [name_u]Anne[/name_u] [name_f]Shirley[/name_f] is definitely a big part of that!

Anne looks more complete and elegant. Anne Shirley has also swayed me in that direction.
