Annabel's Name of the Day!

[name_m]Hi[/name_m] everyone! I hope you’re having a great day/night!

I’m not sure if anyone’s done this before, but I thought it would be cool to have a name of the day thread. [name_f]Every[/name_f] day (or almost every day at least ) I’ll post about a name. I’ll include meaning if I can find it, checking on Nameberry first and Behind the Name if I can’t find one or there’s something unclear. I’m mostly going to include my own opinions of the name, what it makes me think of, and other stuff. I’ll probably end with an open-ended question.

I hope you all like this! I’ll start tomorrow!

[name_f]Maud[/name_f]
Meaning: “battle-mighty”
current popularity: was last in the US top 1000 in 1950
color according to [name_f]Annabel[/name_f]: mauve (ha!)

When I was walking the dog with my sister [name_f]Mae[/name_f] (always a great way to start a story), and I told her about my idea to start a name of the day thread. Now, I know I got lucky, but [name_f]Mae[/name_f], while not being a complete and total name-nerd, will talk to me for a while about names before getting bored. She’s fairly open minded when I ask her about unusual names. But when I told her that my first name of the day was going to be [name_f]Maud[/name_f], she made a face. It might just be me, but I think [name_f]Maud[/name_f] is a pretty polarizing name. Not on the levels of [name_u]Greer[/name_u] (personally, not a fan), but close.

To be honest, it took me a while to warm up to [name_f]Maud[/name_f]. I always had an aversion to so-called ‘old lady names’, until I discovered [name_f]Lois[/name_f] (now that’s a story for another time!). Now, especially after reading the Nameberry blog posts and recently joining the forums community, I’ve started to really like most of them. But even after I warmed up to [name_f]Esther[/name_f] and [name_f]Edith[/name_f] and the like, I couldn’t get behind [name_f]Maud[/name_f].

The final thing that changed my mind was reading the book ‘The Girl Who Circumnavigated Fairyland’, by Catherynne M. Valente. [name_f]My[/name_f] little sister is very into fractured fariytales, so I took it from her bookshelf one day when I was bored. It’s a great book, and I went on to read the rest of the books in the series. I highly recommend it to any fantasy fans! And name-nerds too! (the main character is named [name_u]September[/name_u]. Need I say more?) [name_f]My[/name_f] favorite part about the story was by far the antagonist, who happened to be named [name_f]Maud[/name_f]. Without spoiling the plot, I can safely say that her story was so powerful, sad, and moving that I was crying by the time I closed the book. And I never cry at the end of books or movies.

So, anyway, because of [name_f]Maud[/name_f] in the Fairyland series, the image of the name [name_f]Maud[/name_f] was changed in my head from kind of weak and floppy to strong and powerful. Also, the color of the name to me, which is mauve, very fittingly, was a color I didn’t originally like, but is now growing on me. I actually really like the name [name_f]Maud[/name_f] now! It’s not an absolute favorite, but it’s getting up there. I think it would be so, so sweet on a little girl. [name_f]My[/name_f] guess is it’s definitely going to make a comeback soon!

To me, Maud is going on adventures and finding things you lost a long time ago. It’s walking along beaches by yourself and making new friends. It’s being brave, and getting back up again when you’ve been hurt. Maud is a journey that is long and hard, but leaves you a different and better person than when you started.

So that was my first name-of-the-day post! They’re probably not all going to be this long, but hey, I was having fun! I hope you all like this. Please, leave feedback about things you would like me to include or take out of these posts. I’m planning on doing this for a while. Alright, I have to go, but I’ll leave you with a quote and a question. Have a great day, everyone!

Question of the day: [name_f]Do[/name_f] you think [name_f]Maud[/name_f] is a very polarizing name? And what are some very polarizing names you can think of?

“I have read quite as many stories as you, [name_u]September[/name_u]. More, no doubt. And I know a secret that you do not: I am not the villan.” - [name_f]Maud[/name_f], from the Fairyland Series by Catherynne M. Valente

Day Two
[name_u]March[/name_u] 13, 2021

Uma
meaning: “nation”, “flax”, or “horse”
current popularity: not in the US top 1000
color according to [name_f]Annabel[/name_f]: dusty pink with a hint of blue

It was pretty funny researching the name [name_f]Uma[/name_f] for today! As such a sort name, I’m not surprised that it has origins in multiple different languages. But I started laughing so hard when I realized that it is literally the word for horse in Japanese! It’s also one of many names for a Hindu goddess, and also means ‘the nation’ in Hebrew. I love when I get surprised by a name’s meaning!

I’m a big fan of short and sweet names, especially ones that have bright colors and lots of vowels. [name_f]Iris[/name_f], [name_u]Jean[/name_u], [name_f]Lois[/name_f], [name_u]Kai[/name_u], [name_u]Jude[/name_u], [name_m]Xan[/name_m], and [name_m]Ilan[/name_m] are just a few that I can think of off the top of my head. As soon as I started my research on [name_f]Uma[/name_f] today, I just had to add it immediately to my list. Wouldn’t it just be so cute on a baby girl?

For some reason, the names [name_f]Uma[/name_f], [name_f]Una[/name_f], and [name_f]Oona[/name_f] seem very watery, like names you would give to mermaids. I could have sworn I saw a cartoon once with my cousin that had a mermaid named [name_f]Oona[/name_f] in it. Anyway, [name_f]Uma[/name_f] is such a spunky, sparky, bright name, that I couldn’t help but fall immediately in love with it!

To me, [name_f]Uma[/name_f] is swimming in the ocean and laughing with your friends. It’s eating ice cream and jumping in leaf piles. It’s humming a song you heard on the radio and the smell of lemon zest. [name_f]Uma[/name_f] is a summer day that you want to last forever.

Yay! Second post down! This is so much fun!

Question of the day: What are names you fell in love with the moment you first saw them?

Bye y’all!

[name_u]Love[/name_u] this :two_hearts: You write so warmly and humorously!

Yes, I think it is. Especially this spelling. I can see the appeal, but I’ll admit I’m still not quite there on [name_f]Maud[/name_f] yet. Slightly further forward with [name_f]Maude[/name_f] ([name_f]Maudie[/name_f]!) but it’s the AW vowel sound I just can’t quite get past. But I do admire its style and think it’s a very classy choice.

Other polarizing names: [name_u]Greer[/name_u] (agreed! I really like it), [name_u]Blair[/name_u] (ditto), [name_u]Sloane[/name_u] (not for me), [name_u]Hero[/name_u] (love), plus “cutesy” names as full names, like [name_m]Albie[/name_m], [name_u]Teddy[/name_u], [name_u]Sunny[/name_u], [name_f]Birdie[/name_f], etc.

[name_f]Uma[/name_f] is beautiful. I do slightly prefer [name_f]Una[/name_f] and especially [name_f]Oona[/name_f] though – that double O is so much fun!

[name_f]Anouk[/name_f], [name_u]Hero[/name_u], [name_f]Ziva[/name_f], [name_f]Merrily[/name_f], [name_u]Saro[/name_u], [name_u]Esca[/name_u], [name_m]Tor[/name_m], [name_u]Rafa[/name_u], [name_m]Florin[/name_m], [name_m]Sachin[/name_m]…

Q1:Tbh, I’m really wanting to read this book now:)!
And yes, I think [name_f]Maud[/name_f] is a very polarizing name. At first glance, it didn’t look much to me and the sound was kinda meh. However, now [name_f]Maud[/name_f] reminds me of the earth, with its warmth and steady gentleness.
Other polarizing names (that I’ve grown to love): [name_f]Enid[/name_f], [name_f]Hesper[/name_f], [name_f]Muriel[/name_f], [name_f]Vigdis[/name_f], [name_f]Euphemia[/name_f], [name_f]Eloise[/name_f] (surprisingly!), [name_f]Delphi[/name_f], [name_f]Hestia[/name_f] [name_u]Jude[/name_u], [name_m]Theodore[/name_m], [name_m]Florent[/name_m]…

Q2:Names you fell in love with the moment you first saw them: [name_f]Heidi[/name_f], [name_f]Flora[/name_f], [name_f]Rivka[/name_f], [name_f]Elka[/name_f], [name_f]Fleur[/name_f], [name_f]Isolda[/name_f], [name_f]Aysel[/name_f], [name_u]Briar[/name_u], [name_f]Lovis[/name_f], [name_f]Merewen[/name_f], [name_f]Arwen[/name_f], [name_m]Gwion[/name_m], [name_m]Will[/name_m], [name_u]Kit[/name_u], [name_m]Raphael[/name_m], [name_m]Hosea[/name_m], [name_m]Haskel[/name_m], [name_m]Clemens[/name_m]…

Hi, I am just catching up on your thread  Well done for sticking with it! Yes, I agree that [name_f]Maud[/name_f] is polarising between and within people! Like your sister, I used to make a face at the idea of it being used, but now I like it quite a lot, and I may well be on the way to loving it. The turning point for me was hearing an American [name_u]Berry[/name_u] say it in a lovely lilting voice. [name_f]Maud[/name_f] in my [name_f]English[/name_f] accent sounds a whole lot more blunt!

I think you’ve made me see [name_f]Uma[/name_f] in a whole new way! I love it when that happens. Names I loved at first sight: [name_f]Elestren[/name_f], [name_f]Betrys[/name_f], [name_u]Beck[/name_u], [name_u]Esca[/name_u], [name_u]Isra[/name_u] and [name_f]Mariska[/name_f].

Maud is scrumptious! It’s not my style, but it belongs with the cottagecore greats that have been lost to bygone years :heartbeat:

When I imagine Maud, she is steadfast in her loyalty to the land her family’s lived on for centuries; she’s the embodiment of strength and humility, never bending, except when she’s around her family where her face is always quick to soften. Her name is often said in languid, drawling tones. “Oh, Maud,” says her wife while they sit on the front porch and lean back in their rocking chairs, gazing out at their land creations. They commune in silence after the day is done, the wind whipping their hair into wild curls.

I prefer Maud to Maude, but I don’t understand why it’s controversial. It’s got no extreme sounds, and while it’s old-ladyish, it’s one syllable that doesn’t strike me as repulsive.

[name_m]Ronan[/name_m]
meaning: “little seal”
current popularity: #269 in the US
color according to [name_f]Annabel[/name_f]: dark rusty red

After doing two days of girls names, I knew I really needed to write about a boys name. I’ve been trying to find names that I want to fall in love with, since so far that’s what’s happening. I can’t help but write about these names and love them! But anyway, it took me a second to think of a boys name that I really felt exited about. I finally gave up and started scrolling through the Nameberry list of arctic baby names (check it out! It’s great!), which is the list I always look at when I need inspiration. I was expecting to click on a name that intrigued me, and then maybe click through a couple related names before finding one I likes. Instead, it was just sitting right there. [name_m]Ronan[/name_m]!

In my opinion, [name_m]Ronan[/name_m] is such a special name. I mean, how can you get a cuter meaning than “little seal”? As I’ve mentioned before, I see words and letters as colors, and [name_m]Ronan[/name_m] is a beautiful dark rusty red. It’s similar to the color of [name_u]Rowan[/name_u], except darker and a little more pure. It’s the exact color of the bark on redwood trees! [name_m]Ronan[/name_m] is exactly like that. The name fits in anywhere you’d find a pine tree. It’s fairly popular in the US and around the world, which I think is great! It’s my favorite of all the [name_f]Ro[/name_f]- names, like [name_u]Rory[/name_u], [name_u]Rowan[/name_u], [name_m]Rolan[/name_m], [name_f]Rowena[/name_f], and all of the [name_f]Rose[/name_f] names.

To me, [name_m]Ronan[/name_m] is hiking through the woods far from any city or road. It’s the sound of flowing streams and squirrels running across the branches far above your head. It’s teaching a little kid how to build their first snowman and sitting by a crackling campfire with the people you love. [name_m]Ronan[/name_m] is the moment just after the snow falls when you step outside for the first time and marvel at the blanket of white covering the world.

Thanks to everyone who replied to my previous posts! If you’d like to recommend a name of the day, feel free to message me!

Eadlin
meaning: “noble, wealth”
current popularity: not in the US top 1000
color according to [name_f]Annabel[/name_f]: pink and green

I love the name [name_f]Eadlin[/name_f]. I mean, how can you not? It’s adorable. I love super clunky names. The ‘ead’ sound in [name_f]Eadlin[/name_f] might even beat the ‘mau’ sound in [name_f]Maud[/name_f] as far as sheer awkwardness! And the nickname [name_f]Edie[/name_f] or [name_f]Eadie[/name_f] is so cute and clunky too! What’s not to love? (I swear I’m not being sarcastic.)

In my opinion, [name_f]Eadlin[/name_f] would be the perfect name to give to a baby born around [name_f]Easter[/name_f]. The sounds are similar, and to me the name [name_f]Eadlin[/name_f] is primarily green and pink, which always remind me of springtime and [name_f]Easter[/name_f]. [name_f]My[/name_f] only association with the name is the main character, [name_f]Eadlyn[/name_f], of [name_f]Kiera[/name_f] [name_u]Cass[/name_u]’s Selection book series (along with her mother, whose name is [name_u]America[/name_u]). It’s not a bad association necessarily, although the series wasn’t my favorite (my sister, on the other hand, loved it). But I think the spelling difference between [name_f]Eadlin[/name_f] and [name_f]Eadlyn[/name_f] is distinct enough to loose the connection. And one association isn’t enough to put me off of such a sweet, adorable name.

To me, [name_f]Eadlin[/name_f] is dancing in the rain and sitting outside in the sun. It’s laying on your back and watching the clouds drift by overhead. It’s freshly-squeezed lemonade and watching little kids hunt for plastic [name_f]Easter[/name_f] eggs in the grass. It’s drawing stars with pink sidewalk chalk and having a sing-along with your family in the car on a road trip. [name_f]Eadlin[/name_f] is the best parts of spring, when the flowers are blooming and the sun is out and you’re so happy to be alive.

Day four is done! To mix things up, I’m going to add a poll and a question of the day! I know, I know, it’s risky, but sometimes you have to take a leap of faith

Which season does the name [name_f]Eadlin[/name_f] remind you the most of?

  • Spring
  • Summer
  • Autumn
  • Winter
  • …I don’t really get a seasons vibe

Fenn
meaning: “wetland, marsh”
current popularity: not in the US top 1000
color according to [name_f]Annabel[/name_f]: very green!

For the few people who actually read these posts, this is a bit of a pitch for my Ultimate Name Tournament, which is a competition where people come up with middles for selected first names and then the combos will be voted on until we’re left with one winner. [name_m]Fenn[/name_m] is the chosen first name in the unisex with two middles category. I know [name_m]Fenn[/name_m] is categorized in Nameberry as a masculine name, but it’s very unisex to me. Yes, it would make a good alternative to [name_u]Finn[/name_u], but it could also be a shortened version of [name_f]Fenna[/name_f] or an alternative to many other popular four-letter girls names (I’m looking at you, [name_f]Emma[/name_f]).

Fenn, as a variation of [name_u]Fen[/name_u], mean marsh or wetland. I know some people don’t particularly like marshes or wetlands, but I think they’re just as beautiful as mountains or plains. All nature is wonderful, in my opinion. I also think it’s fitting that [name_m]Fenn[/name_m], with it’s naturey meaning, is very green to me, like the color of ferns or moss. It’s a little strange that the double-Ns in [name_m]Fenn[/name_m] don’t show up as red to me like they normally, and instead amplify the green of the F and E.

To me, [name_m]Fenn[/name_m] is climbing moss-covered trees in dense forests and and dashing through meadows. It’s watching a deer dash away, here one second and gone the next, as quick as a blink. It’s the color of early-morning sunlight on maidenhair ferns, and the wind whistling through the tall grasses high in the hills. [name_m]Fenn[/name_m] a day spent in nature that you never want to end.

Alright, that’s day five! [name_f]Hope[/name_f] you all enjoyed. And participate in the Name Tournament if you’d like! It’s going to be fun!

Question of the day: does [name_m]Fenn[/name_m] lean more masculine or feminine to you?

:herb: Have a great day! :herb:

Fenn seems more masculine to me, but I can see it on a girl!
