Annaleigh?

DH and I met at the beach, and were married on the beach, so the name [name]K_ai[/name] seemed perfect for our little boy.

Everyone loves the story behind how we chose his name, but now we’re having a hard time coming up with a name for a future daughter that evokes a similar feeling. We don’t just want a name that we like- we want it to be mean something to us.

One name we did come up with is [name]Annaleigh[/name]: we were married on [name]Anna[/name] [name]Maria[/name] Island, and then my middle name is [name]Leigh[/name] ([name]Lee[/name], but I prefer the [name]Leigh[/name] spelling).

[name]Love[/name] the way it looks and sounds and of course the meaning…but is it a little too frilly sounding with [name]Kai[/name]? I’ve read on other message boards that it sounds made up, or that it’s way too trendy sounding, or that it sounds like “anally.” (It doesn’t sound like “anally” to me at all, but I think that’s because I pronounce “[name]Anna[/name]” like “[name]Ah[/name]-nuh” with a sharp short a sound, as in apple, alligator, and atlas, instead of “[name]Ann[/name]-uh.” [name]Ah[/name]-nuh not to be confused with On-nuh.)

Thoughts?
Any other suggestions welcome as well!

It’s tryndeigh. What about [name]Anna[/name] [name]Lee[/name]? [name]Just[/name] [name]Anna[/name] is gorgeous too. Other [name]Anna[/name] names:

[name]Annika[/name]
[name]Anya[/name]
[name]Annabel[/name]
[name]Anneliese[/name]

You could also do [name]Annemarie[/name] or [name]Marianne[/name] after [name]Anna[/name] [name]Maria[/name] Island.

Here are other names that sound good with [name]Kai[/name]:

[name]Ruby[/name]
[name]Stella[/name]
[name]Helena[/name]
[name]Vivian[/name]
[name]Camille[/name]
[name]Lily[/name]
[name]Greta[/name]
[name]Linnea[/name]
[name]Bridget[/name]
[name]Isabel[/name]
[name]Zara[/name]
[name]Eloise[/name]
[name]Cecily[/name]

Thank you for the quick reply. Is it the leigh on the end that makes it trendy sounding? Because [name]Anna[/name] and [name]Leigh[/name] are classic names on their own…

I am not a fan of [name]Anna[/name] [name]Maria[/name] or [name]Annmarie[/name] at all, so those are definitely out.

I would just name her [name]Anna[/name] [name]Leigh[/name] and call her by both names.

Good luck!

I believe the traditional spelling is Anelie. It is a [name]German[/name] short form of [name]Anneliese[/name]. It is still the same name with the same pronounciation but a more streamlined spelling. [name]Annaleigh[/name] looks a bit butchered in my opinion. Anelie is super cute and goes well with [name]Kai[/name] imo.

[name]Annaleigh[/name] was one of the first names i considered for my daughter but i couldnt get over people saying it sounded like anally…how about:
[name]Kai[/name] and [name]Pearl[/name]…a gem found in the ocean…
[name]Kai[/name] and [name]Oceane[/name]
[name]Kai[/name] and [name]Ami[/name] (A.M.I.= [name]Anna[/name] [name]Maria[/name] Island)
[name]Kai[/name] and [name]Isla[/name] sounds like island

I think most people would have a tough time pronouncing it with this spelling- it doesn’t look like the same name at all :frowning: My first guess would be Uh-nell-ee or Uh-neel-ee just by seeing it :-/

Yes, it’s mostly the -leigh ending-- it’s like [name]Kayleigh[/name], [name]Carleigh[/name], [name]Hayleigh[/name], [name]Marleigh[/name], etc., which are made-up, tryndeigh, and don’t age well. A name like [name]Anna[/name] [name]Leigh[/name] would be fine, because she could always choose to call herself by the more grown-up sounding [name]Anna[/name] (or even [name]Leigh[/name]). [name]Annelie[/name] is another option, but it still looks made up to me, even though it is a legitimate diminutive of [name]Anneliese[/name].

What about [name]Ana[/name] (pn On-nuh)?

I’ve read that it also has Hawaiian roots, which would make it go really well with [name]Kai[/name]…

I agree the -leigh ending is what makes it look trendy, and there is potential teasing. Have you considered [name]Anna[/name] [name]Leigh[/name], and calling her [name]Anna[/name]?

More beach names:
[name]Darya[/name] “sea”
[name]Mira[/name] “sea”
[name]Marina[/name] “of the sea”
[name]Rosemary[/name] - This name can also be given in reference to the herb, which gets its name from Latin ros marinus meaning “dew of the sea”.
[name]Maya[/name] - “water”
[name]Undine[/name] - “wave”

I really like the name Ataliegh!

[name]Annaleigh[/name] does look trendy but I love that it has a special meaning for you, and that to me seems more important than the spelling. But if you were to change the spelling I think [name]Annalee[/name] is very sweet and gives it a kind of southern belle charm!

it is a really pretty name…its the hawaiian version of hannah…not an authentic hawaiian name like kai and it sounds more spanish than hawaiian to me…still pretty though

some of my favorite hawaiian names to go with [name]Kai[/name]:

[name]Kai[/name] and Kanani - means the beautiful one
[name]Kai[/name] and [name]Nani[/name] - beautiful
[name]Kai[/name] and [name]Leilani[/name] - lit. heavenly garland of flowers - garland is a symbol of a child in hawaii because it looks like a child wrapping their arms around the parent, so real meaning - child of heaven

[name]Kai[/name] and Kamele (kuh-meh-lay) - the happy one/the song
[name]Kai[/name] and [name]Mele[/name]- happy/song
[name]Kai[/name] and [name]Halia[/name] (huh-lee-uh) - means remembrance
[name]Kai[/name] and Hoku- means star
[name]Kai[/name] and Mahea- means moon
[name]Kai[/name] and [name]Maile[/name] (my-lay)- its the name of a hawaiian vine used in weddings
[name]Kai[/name] and [name]Kale[/name]'a - means joy
[name]Kai[/name] and [name]Lani[/name]- means heaven or sky
[name]Kai[/name] and Makana- means gift
[name]Kai[/name] and Kekoa-brave, kinda masculine next to [name]Kai[/name], but i do like it
[name]Kai[/name] and Kawena (kuh-ven-uh)- glowing
[name]Kai[/name] and [name]Noelani[/name] - heavenly mist
[name]Kai[/name] and [name]Makani[/name] - means wind
[name]Kai[/name] and Kamalei - beloved child
[name]Kai[/name] and Kamea- sweet darling
[name]Kai[/name] and Kanoa- free one
[name]Kai[/name] and Kapua- blossom

I think most people would have a tough time pronouncing it with this spelling- it doesn’t look like the same name at all :frowning: My first guess would be Uh-nell-ee or Uh-neel-ee just by seeing it :-/[/quote]

Really? I thought it was pretty strait foward. Most people know how to pronounce [name]Anneliese[/name]. There is also [name]Analie[/name] and [name]Annelie[/name] as variations.

Does [name]Annalee[/name] make it seem less trendy?

Does [name]Annalee[/name] make it seem less trendy?[/quote]

Yes, [name]Annalee[/name] looks far less trendy. [name]Annalie[/name] could work too.

I actually like the sp. of [name]Annaleigh[/name]…a very pretty name.

You were married on [name]Anna[/name] [name]Maria[/name] Island, so what about…

[name]Mariana[/name] [name]Leigh[/name]

I think it’s an absolutely beautiful name.

I love this name, but I agree that the leigh spelling looks trendy. Still I wouldn’t consider it to be close to as bad as [name]Kayleigh[/name] or the likes, it sounds much more legit than that to me. My mom used to babysit an [name]Annalee[/name] and she loved the name so much that we named one of my childhood dogs that. So I love the name! I think we spelled it [name]Annalee[/name], but I’ll check with my mom. I really don’t get how people can say it sounds like “anally”, I would never in a million years made that connection… who says “anally”, anyway?

[name]Annalee[/name]- I’m pretty sure this is my favorite by far
Annalei - pronunciation confusion
[name]Annalie[/name] - [name]Anna[/name]-lye
[name]Analie[/name] - this is the only one that looks like “anally” to me.
I think it really needs two Ns

[name]Kai[/name] and [name]Annalee[/name] look better together than [name]Kai[/name] and [name]Annaleigh[/name]. The -leigh is too floofy to go with the streamlined [name]Kai[/name], in my opinion. Plus didn’t you say your middle name is [name]Lee[/name]? I think that would be nicer, personally. Another suggestion is [name]Cordelia[/name], it means “daughter of the sea”. [name]Annalee[/name] [name]Cordelia[/name] would be pretty, or [name]Cordelia[/name] [name]Annalee[/name]!

I think [name]Annaleigh[/name] is gorgeous, it’s on my list-spelt that way too. I don’t see it as trendy.
