Annecy?

met a baby girl today named Annecy. i think her middle name is [name]Caroline[/name].

annecy is a lake in france–and the subject of a painting by cezanne.

what do the berries think of “Annecy”?

I’m not keen on it. The French pronunciation (an-SEE) sounds too much like ‘antsy’ to me, and (AN-eh-see) just doesn’t sound quite right in my opinion. I like the opportunity for [name]Anna[/name] and Cece as nicknames though. It’s not a bad name, it just doesn’t appeal to me much.

On another note, I adore [name]Caroline[/name]!

If I saw Annecy written down, without knowing anything about it, I’d assume that its an adjective for something. Its sweet that she’s named after a [name]Lake[/name], it just definitely wouldn’t be my choice. Doesn’t look or sound like a name to me.

genevie–i agree. pronunciation awkward to american ears. i thought her mother was saying “nancy” with an accent until she corrected me.

lucykate–i’m with you.

posted because i mentioned it to the people i work with and they LOVED it. wondered what i didn’t see.
thanks for validating my reaction.

It’s one of the most beautiful cities on earth, so I can see the appeal-- but definitely doesn’t work in the US. I hear both “antsy” and “anus-y,” neither of which is a pleasant option.

You don’t happen to live in [name]Colorado[/name], do you? There’s a little Annecy here, probably about four years old. She pronounces it “[name]AH[/name]-nah-see”. I thought her mom was calling her “honesty” at first.

i noticed this name–Annecy–in the blog of lake names. I’m wondering–how are people going to pronounce it–
like the proper french an–see (almost like nancy without the starting n) or with the “silent” e pronounced so it becomes–an-e-see?

It’s too bad that certain french names just don’t work out with American pronunciation. I love [name]Anais[/name], but it’s just so awkward for many Americans to pronounce. In the case of Annecy (which I’ve never heard before), I agree with others, it doesn’t look like a name. The first thing I thought of was anencephaly, which is some sort of medical condition, I can’t remember what exactly.

No offense, but I think Annecy looks weird and I said it outloud and it sounded like antsy to me.

Annecy is really cute! I actually like it a lot. I automatically pronounced it AN-ES-EE, but I think the French way is prettier.

I’ve always loved [name]Caroline[/name] in the middle.

I’m with Oliviasarah. I pronounced this “An-es-ee” until I saw the other pronunciations people listed. I like it and didn’t hear “antsy” until, again, I saw others say that. I don’t think that I would use it but it’s nice.

This name was on my short list for my second child! [name]Both[/name] my husband and I loved it for a girl and had our name list down to three when we found out the ultrasound tech was incorrect and we were having a boy. But I still love it!

Yes, this. I’ve loved the name since visiting but decided it would never work due to the pronunciation issues listed above.
