I love the name [name]Annelie[/name], and my DH likes it to. We don’t agree on much so this is a huge plus!
However, some people say it’ lovely and others say it shrieks ‘Anally’ to them. I can see it if you totally miss pronounce the name, but I don’t see it at all just looking at it spelled THIS way.
I’ve read many message boards and [name]Annalise[/name] get excellent comments and never gets called ugly/anal like [name]Annelie[/name], which to me looks a lot worse and just as easy if not easier to make fun of.
I pronounce [name]Annelie[/name] like [name]Anna[/name]-[name]Lee[/name] (the first ‘a’ sound like in candy) and anal is like the ‘a’ sound in grape, very different sounds.
Gimme your opinions good and bad please!
Does anyone personally know an [name]Annelie[/name] or [name]Annalise[/name] or similar ([name]Annalee[/name], [name]Annaleigh[/name], [name]Anneliese[/name]) that has had an issue in real life? Is it worse in certain regions of the US. We are in the South.
I too am in the south, but don’t know any [name]Anneliese[/name] or [name]Annelie[/name]'s. I say that if you both agree on a name then go with that one and don’t worry on any possible ways the name might be made fun of. If you don’t use a name that you both love and instead “follow the crowd” you might end up with regrets.
I love both [name]Annalise[/name] (though I prefer the [name]Anneliese[/name] spelling) and [name]Annelie[/name] (though I prefer [name]Annalie[/name] or [name]Annalee[/name]). I don’t associate the name with “anally,” and I don’t think most people would, so while it’s good to have that on your radar for potential teasing, I definitely wouldn’t let it keep me from using the name. For any of the [name]Annalise[/name]/[name]Annelie[/name] names, I think the biggest complication is pronunciation and spelling, since there are several accepted pronunciations and spellings for either name. I live in the South, and I’ve only known one little [name]Annelise[/name], but I have no clue if she has any issues with teasing.
I’ve met at least two Annelieses (with different spellings), and I went to high school with an [name]Annalee[/name]. As far as I know, none of them ever got “anally” teasing, and I agree, [name]Anneliese[/name] would get it just as easily as [name]Annelie[/name] would. I actually always hear “anal(ly)” brought up when someone is considering [name]Anneliese[/name].
Then again, I’ve gone to [name]Christian[/name] schools the majority of my life, so there’s not really that much teasing there, period. It’s very strongly discouraged, and even when faculty aren’t around, it doesn’t seem to be a huge issue.
I live in the UK and have only ever known one [name]Anneliese[/name] (and no, [name]Annelie[/name]'s but my first thought when I hear it is “anally”). The [name]Anneliese[/name] I know has received some horrible nicknames throughout her life and this is the reason I would never consider the name as a first name, it’s middle name only territory for me.
I don’t particularly want to write them all out but it’s ranged from On-a-leash to Anal-lease, neither of which I would want for my daughter. I think it would be a potential teasing problem either way, whether you used in [name]Anneliese[/name] or [name]Annelie[/name] so it’s entirely up to you.
There might be other [name]Anneliese[/name]'s who are never teased because of their name but this is just my experience of the name and I thought I’d put it out there.
There is an episode of Family [name]Guy[/name] where pervy Quagmire names his daughter Anally (pronounced [name]Anna[/name]-[name]Lee[/name]). However, if you spell it without the word “anal” in it, it should be fine. I know people called [name]Anneliese[/name], and they have no problems because the word “anal” doesn’t appear in their name. [name]Annelie[/name] should be no problem, so go for it!
For a long time I loved the name [name]Anna[/name]-[name]Lee[/name] but I decided that the whole “anally” thing was Not worth it. If I were you I would go with [name]Annalise[/name]. <It is a classic spelling to a beautiful name (can’t go wrong)!!!
I do know an 8 year old girl and her name is [name]Annalise[/name]. She goes by [name]Anna[/name] though but I don’t think she has ever been teased. I live in the Midwest.
I hate to say it, but even with the [name]Annelie[/name] spelling, all I can see/hear is anally. The extra s in [name]Anneliese[/name]/[name]Annalise[/name] really does make a big difference; for whatever reason, I just don’t notice the anal connection with that name!
[name]Annelie[/name] is really nice and pretty, but I personally love the name [name]Anneliese[/name] -spelled this way. If you really like the name [name]Annelie[/name] you shouldn’t let some potential teasing get in the way of it because it’s a really pretty name. And if a kid wants to tease they’ll find something to tease about, there’s no need for a “teasable” name.
Thanks for all the comments. It is nice to hear many different takes on it, good and bad. I still have a few days to find out if we are even having a girl. I casually mentioned it to my husband and he thought it sounded nice, but he hasn’t seen it written, so if he thinks it is an issue when he does then I know it will be off the table anyway. I just had to see if everyone but me saw ‘anal’ and I was just being blind to it because of the significance the name has for me.
I actually have a cousin [name]Annalea[/name] pronounced [name]Anna[/name]-[name]Lee[/name]. When people say her name, they usually say “[name]Anna[/name]-[name]Leah[/name]” I think [name]Annelie[/name] does look more like anally than [name]Annalea[/name] or [name]Annalee[/name] or even [name]Annalie[/name]. Maybe a different spelling would help. I think both [name]Annelie[/name] and [name]Anneliese[/name] are beautiful names!
My [name]Oma[/name] ([name]German[/name] grandmother)'s name is [name]Anneliese[/name], pronounced On-uh-leez-uh. It’s a beautiful name imo.
I like the name [name]Analeigh[/name], pronounced on-uh-lee. I don’t like your spelling for it. It looks very made up.
Another variant could be [name]Analicia[/name], [name]Anna[/name]-lee-see-uh? I don’t like [name]Analise[/name] very much, but I love [name]Anneliese[/name] when pronounced correctly.
I’ve never made the whole “anally” connection before just now, haha (x I don’t see it.
That’s interesting because [name]Annelie[/name] is the [name]German[/name] spelling, which is one reason I prefer this spelling, and a diminutive version of [name]Anneliese[/name]. It is on several [name]German[/name] name lists I have seen and was even a [name]German[/name] movie I think. I do pronounce it more American, but I would never be able to get my family to pronounce it On-uh-lee, it doesn’t work as well for me. Thanks for your input, I do appreciate it
Yeah, what I find most amusing is that her grandmother is [name]Anneliese[/name]. [name]Annelie[/name] is [name]Anneliese[/name] without the -se on the end. I see [name]Analeigh[/name] as more “made-up looking” than [name]Annelie[/name].
As for the whole anally thing, every time this name comes up, so does the “anally” connection. So, for that reason, it’s kind of permanently stuck in my mind.
