We thought we were done when our fifth child, our first daughter, was born almost two years ago. However, we are once again expecting a precious surprise and although the baby is not due until [name]June[/name], I’m already feeling the excited worry over finding the perfect name. My brain is spinning into over-drive!
Each of children has at least one name that honors someone or something in our lives. In that same tradition, we plan on probaly using [name]Emmeline[/name] as the middle name if it’s a girl.
Here is the first draft of our girl’s name list. What do you think of the names? Does anything hit you as ‘wrong’ flow wise (or any other way)? Thanks in advance for your help!
Yes, I know these next few are, very different than the other choices and our 1st daughter has a very ‘girly name’ but still…)
[name]Sawyer[/name]
[name]Shiloh[/name]
[name]Piper[/name]
Pfiffer
I think [name]Liliana[/name], [name]Isla[/name], [name]Violet[/name], or [name]Seraphina[/name] are great with your sibset. I love [name]Bellatrix[/name], just not sure it “fits”
I think [name]Violet[/name] [name]Emmeline[/name] has the best flow, I would advise you to go with a one or two syllable name since the middle name is three syllables, to go with one that is three sounds awkward and with one that is four is just too much. I do like [name]Shiloh[/name] and it works pretty well with [name]Emmeline[/name], but I am not sure it matches the style of your other childrens names.
Oh, please please use Gloriana! Gloriana [name]Emmeline[/name] is fantastic. [name]Sylvia[/name] and [name]Astoria[/name] are lovely with [name]Emmeline[/name] as well. And I like [name]Piper[/name] from the other names, the others are very boyish to me. But [name]Piper[/name] [name]Emmeline[/name] is very pretty.
You can’t use [name]Madeleine[/name] or [name]Clementine[/name] because of [name]Emmeline[/name], and I would stay away from [name]Philomina[/name] too.
I’m putting [name]Bellatrix[/name] in that box too, although I love the name. The evil witch who killed [name]Sirius[/name] [name]Black[/name]? Not so much.
[name]Astoria[/name] and [name]Linnea[/name] were my faves from your list to go with your other children, but a agree with pp that [name]Linnea[/name] [name]Emmeline[/name] doesn’t quite work, so [name]Astoria[/name] [name]Emmeline[/name] would be my pick.
[name]Astoria[/name] is “girly” enough to stand with [name]Carolina[/name], and “classical” and “spunky” enough to work with [name]Jason[/name], [name]Griffin[/name], [name]Jackson[/name] and [name]Landon[/name].
I especially like [name]Astoria[/name] and [name]Lilliana[/name], but I do feel that [name]India[/name] and [name]Indigo[/name] would not work as [name]Indi[/name] would not flow with your family. [name]Love[/name] the other two though!
[name]Violet[/name], [name]Georgia[/name], and [name]Sylvia[/name] are the only names that flow decently with [name]Emmeline[/name] as a mn, in my opinion. [name]How[/name] would you pronounce [name]Linnea[/name]? It’s my name but I say it differently than most Americans as I’m named after my Swedish grandmother.
You are right. [name]Bellatrix[/name] doesn’t really fit at all. I know that but, it’s a hard one to let go of. [name]Violet[/name] was on our short list for [name]Carolina[/name]. She wasn’t named until she was three days old. We never had that trouble with any of our boys. Thus my ‘name panic’ so early in the game this time. Thanks for the input!
I have to admit to breaking the ‘syllable’ rule often. Our last name is a two syllable name and all of our boys have two syllable first names as well. I know it is supposed to sound more melodic when you mix and match syllables but I guess my tastes are a bit off, as compared to most people, and it doesn’t bug me overly much to repeat the number of syllables. Thanks for reminding me of it, I always forget to consider the whole syllable flow thing.
You are right about [name]Shiloh[/name]. I like the name and dh really loves the name, but for some reason it just doesn’t seem to fit in with our other kids’ names.
Very true. A few of the names don’t flow well with [name]Emmaline[/name] at all. We’d be willing to find another middle name if needed. However, we’d need to consider working meaning in another way. I wouldn’t say we have many set rules about the names we’ve given our kids other than at least one of the names must have meaning for us. Oh and you have to be able to use it as the President of the United States or be able to have it shouted out in a biker bar. Typed out, that seems odd…we just want their names to work for them no matter where they end up in life. [name]Astoria[/name] was my number one choice last time. However, when our sweet girl came out, she just didn’t seem to fit the name.
We are going to have to take [name]Linnea[/name] off of the list, I just realized. [name]Carolina[/name]'s nickname is often, [name]Lina[/name]. [name]Linnea[/name] is just too close.
I knew there was a reason we axed [name]Bellatrix[/name] before. Thank you for reminding me of the reason why. Our oldest son gave it the heave ho off of our list last time due to her killing [name]Harry[/name]‘s godfather. I wish the name wasn’t so beautiful. However, it really doesn’t fit with our other kids’ names anyway, so it’s one of the easier eliminations to make.
If we used the name [name]Philomina[/name], we could do away with [name]Emmaline[/name] as it was my grandmother’s name. I’m just not so sure about it. I like it one day and feel look warm about it the next.
[name]Sylvia[/name] and [name]Astoria[/name] were both on our short list last time we struggled with a girl’s name. And I do love Pipper. I’ve loved [name]Pippy[/name] Longstocking since I was a little girl so I’d [name]LOVE[/name] to be able to use the nickname [name]Pippy[/name] for a bitty little girl and then the lovely nickname [name]Pippa[/name] would work as she grew.
You don’t think Gloriana is too much? It was the name of a ship in a book I read awhile back. I also had a very sweet great aunt named [name]Gloria[/name] so that would work in a meaningful reason to use the name. I’m unsure about how dh will react to Gloriana as a first name. Your post just gave me the confidence to run it by him though.
Thanks for the great input. I do want a spunky name (or at least nickname possibility) and I don’t want anything ‘invented’. I’m so happy that [name]Astoria[/name] is getting such a good reception.
Thanks, [name]Landon[/name]'s name is one of my favorites. He’s named after my dad ([name]Donald[/name]) and dh’s grandpa (another [name]Donald[/name]). We didn’t want to use [name]Donald[/name] itself, so we scrambled up the letters and viola…[name]Landon[/name] was named. [name]Theodore[/name] was also my dad’s middle name. And [name]Lennox[/name] was a family name on dh’s grandma’s side of the family.
[name]How[/name] do you pronounce [name]Anya[/name]? Is it [name]Ann[/name]-ya or On-ya?
I have to admit, I’m very drawn to the nickname [name]Indi[/name]. [name]Do[/name] you think [name]Indi[/name] would fit in with [name]Jay[/name], [name]Griff[/name], Jacks, [name]Land[/name] and [name]Lina[/name] as nicknames? Those are the names we use as nicknames for the other kids. However, they mostly go by their given names with everyone else but our immediate family. Other than [name]Jason[/name], about 1/4 of the people he knows call him [name]Jay[/name].
When I hear [name]Linnea[/name] in my head I hear “[name]Lynn[/name]-neh-a (soft a)” [name]How[/name] do you pronounce it? I like [name]Georgia[/name] a whole lot but I wonder, is it too much to already have a [name]Carolina[/name] and then use [name]Georgia[/name] as well?
So you think it’d be okay to have a girly girl name like [name]Carolina[/name] as a sibling with a more gender neutral sounding [name]Piper[/name]? Thanks for your input!
