Another guilty pleasure we're seriously considering

We’re having a lot of fun naming our child. If anything, we’ll be left with a collection of names for cats and dogs, and perhaps another baby down the road. My husband first brought up the idea of leaving [name_m]Benjamin[/name_m] aside and consider [name_m]Huckleberry[/name_m] as a middle name if we have a boy. While I love the idea, [name_m]Benjamin[/name_m] is an important name to me and didn’t want to negotiate. Now he says “well, how about [name_m]Huck[/name_m] as a first name?”

I don’t know. Sounds crazy enough that it might just work, but at this point we’ve been thinking about names non-stop and we could very well have lost our minds.

[name_f]Happy[/name_f] 2016 to you and your loved ones

If this baby was a boy he would be named [name_m]Huck[/name_m] [name_m]Robertson[/name_m] - see signature. (family name middle) love it and I think it’s totally usable! [name_m]Huck[/name_m] [name_m]Benjamin[/name_m] is handsome!

I think [name_m]Huck[/name_m] is fine

Although [name_m]Huck[/name_m] isn’t my personal cup of tea, I don’t think there’s anything wrong with it.

So I say go for it

I run all my favorite names past my six year old sister to get an idea of how other children will view the name, and when I asked what she would think if she met a little boy called [name_m]Huck[/name_m] she said “like football?”. Apparently it sounds too similar to “hut” for her and she made a couple of football and pizza “[name_m]Huck[/name_m]” jokes. Personally I still kind of like it, but I think I would second guess using it knowing that children could turn it into a mean joke.

My husband has a nephew named [name_m]Huck[/name_m]. I had never even thought about the name before he was born, but now I love it. [name_m]Huck[/name_m] [name_m]Benjamin[/name_m] is a winner.

My oldest sons are 8 and 5 and they never thought of anything weird for [name_m]Huck[/name_m]. And my 5 yeaar old is pretty good at it. When I suggested [name_f]Peony[/name_f] for this baby he said ‘sounds like pee on me’ and giggled endlessly. I think kids will find ways to make fun of just about any name. My name is [name_u]Burgundy[/name_u] I was called everything from purple to burger? Kids are weird. I don’t see [name_m]Huck[/name_m] being a name that is built for teasing though.

I definitely think it works, especially since it allows you to keep the honor name. It seems to work on every age too.

Fortunately, [name_m]Huck[/name_m] has a cool enough reference to balance out pizza and football, no? I know small kids won’t be aware of [name_m]Huckleberry[/name_m] [name_u]Finn[/name_u] or [name_m]Tom[/name_m] [name_u]Sawyer[/name_u], but the connection will last longer than six year old nicknames (of maybe its just hopeful thinking).

I’m starting to like it more and more. Thank you all for your comments and honesty. It has been truly helpful.

I think it is definately usable but I think it’s important to go into it knowing that a great many people still attach the name to the character and any baggage that may apply. People will likely think he is named after the character and you are a fan of the books. Not everyone sees the character or book in the same way and time can change these impressions. This can be of particular concern because of racial issues. Look at what happened with [name_m]Atticus[/name_m]. I’d recommended researching modern interpretations of the character and book and not just relying on your personal feelings about it before making a decision.

That’s a good point anaxandra. I’ve read recent discussions on [name_m]Twain[/name_m]'s works, related to race and representation, and none of it has been definitive or overtly negative. Obvisouly that doesn’t mean much. I’ll ask friends around.

No one sees the cuss word imbedded in [name_m]Huck[/name_m]?
Replace H with F?

From a teen’s perspective, this is dangerous ground.

I think it could work

Not a big deal in my opinion. By the time someone is old enough to be using that lanuage ‘[name_m]Huck[/name_m]’ should be old enough to deal with it or ignore it.

[name_m]Huck[/name_m] [name_m]Benjamin[/name_m] is awesome!!! I really love [name_m]Benjamin[/name_m] [name_m]Huck[/name_m] and calling him by his middle name [name_m]Huck[/name_m], that way he has a formal first name.

We did think of the [name_m]Huck[/name_m]/fuck similarity but it didn’t seem like a big deal. What Anaxandra mentioned matter more to us than a curse word.

A dear friend of mine is named [name_f]Regina[/name_f] and around her middle school years some kids noticed how easily the name could sound like vagina, and while it was stupid, it didn’t matter much to anyone involved, and very particularly it didn’t matter to her.
