I swear anyone keeping tabs on my posts would think I was all over the place stylistically! And maybe I am:) I’m really trying to revisit names I never would have considered before as my husband and I really don’t agree on anything this time around. Would love to have fresh ideas to present him with and this name falls under the category of names I always found pretty but would probably never use. As the usual case when I try new name ideas, [name]Jocelyn[/name] probably doesn’t work perfectly in my sibset, but I’m trying to get over the sibset obsession. [name]How[/name] do you think [name]Jocelyn[/name] [name]Maeve[/name] sounds with siblings [name]Mason[/name] [name]Patrick[/name] and [name]Brenna[/name] [name]Claire[/name]? Also, I’d love to know how most of you pronounce the name… With or without the little “uh” hiccup between [name]Joss[/name] and [name]Lyn[/name]? I prefer it pronounced with two syllables, as in “[name]Joslyn[/name]” but I don’t think I could ever bring myself to use a conjured up spelling like that. Lastly, I enjoy the nn [name]Joss[/name] but I do not like [name]Josie[/name]. Is [name]Josie[/name] avoidable? Sorry for the novel, having quite a name nerdy day!
I say it like joss-lyn, without the ‘uh’ in the middle. I wouldn’t think to nn [name]Jocelyn[/name] as [name]Josie[/name] immediately. It would only occur to me if I was really brainstorming other options than [name]Joss[/name], if that makes sense. It’s not automatic/natural, imo.
[name]Jocelyn[/name] [name]Maeve[/name] sounds lovely, and I think it fits extremely well with the other two children, actually!
[name]LOVE[/name] [name]Jocelyn[/name]! It would easily be on my list, but I have a no-unisex ultimatum for girls’ FNs. I have one and I just wouldn’t want my daughter to go through the negative aspects of my name that I really don’t like. I don’t want my daughter to feel like her femininity is limited because she doesn’t have a fully feminine name. I have felt that way, and I hate it. Otherwise, it’d easily be on my list. I actually really like [name]Mason[/name], [name]Brenna[/name], and [name]Jocelyn[/name] together, and [name]Joss[/name] is adorable. I used to work with a [name]Jocelyn[/name] who went by [name]Jossie[/name]/Josci/Jocie? I’m not sure how she spelled it, but it was like [name]JOSS[/name]-ee. I thought that was sweet, too. I’m with you–I really don’t like [name]Josie[/name]. I don’t think it’d be that hard to avoid.
[name]Jocelyn[/name] [name]Maeve[/name] is lovely. I really like it.
I agree! Nice fit, intuitive [name]Joss[/name] not [name]Josie[/name], and the second syllable of [name]Jocelyn[/name] is like the second syllable of [name]Catherine[/name]: pronounced rarely to never. The only thing is that it sounds like jostlin’.
Thanks All. Sansa, just had to say I was reading your signature and the boys’ name [name]Rafferty[/name] with nn [name]Rafe[/name] makes me swoon!!! [name]Just[/name] had to add that, but thanks for the feedback so far
I say [name]Joss[/name]-lyn, two syllables. I grew up in a french community and always loved the name, its so beautiful in french, then hearing it later in life in English, i was turned off. But I was hearing redneck people pronounce it harshly like jawz-uh-lyn or something, not attractive. Now I am used to it in English and have an English friend with the name and notice most people say joss-lyn and it sounds lovely. I adore the nn [name]Joss[/name]!! I have [name]Josephine[/name] on my shortlist, and got there by looking for a full name for [name]Joss[/name]. I don’t think [name]Josie[/name] is the “natural” nn for [name]Jocelyn[/name].
I also like the sounds of [name]Mason[/name], [name]Brenna[/name] and [name]Jocelyn[/name]
Thanks, haha. I love the sound of [name]Rafferty[/name]. It’s a fun name
I think [name]Jocelyn[/name] sounds good with [name]Mason[/name] and [name]Brenna[/name]. I like it. I don’t think [name]Josie[/name]'s automatic. I think it’s fully plausible if someone were to prefer it over [name]Joss[/name], but I agree [name]Joss[/name] would be the default. I personally pronounce it with three syllables (but not jaws, definitely [name]Joss[/name]), maybe I’m a bit of a redneck (smile to previous poster). I did grow up sort of in the south so I wonder if there really is a dialect thing here. I live in the northeast now and I work with a [name]Jocelyn[/name] - I feel like I hear 2 and 3 syllable pronunciations about equally. It’s interesting to see so many posters saying 2 here. I mean, linguistically, a weak syllable really is something like half a syllable, so it really is 2.5 if you average it out, but people do have a lot of individual variation in exactly what they do (partly influenced by dialect, definitely).
[name]Jocelyn[/name] [name]Maeve[/name] is gorgeous. I love it!
I pronounce it both ways, depending on how fast I’m talking [name]JOSS[/name]-lynn, and JAH-suh-lynn. I think both ways are gorgeous. [name]JOSS[/name]-lynn is probably far more common, so I wouldn’t worry about it.
And I agree with everyone else; no one will call her [name]Josie[/name] automatically.
Thanks everybody! Nice to see positive feedback. Jesba, appreciate the insight on different dialects. I definitely think if I choose the name I have to be ok with the fact that she’ll probably get both pronounciations. I really am not bothered by [name]JOSS[/name] UH [name]LIN[/name] but would probably train at least close friends and family to say it the way I prefer. Thanks again for the replies and keep me comin- really starting to consider this name now!
