Another thread about

I think there is a few threads out there about this sort of thing…but I really would love some opinions on my specific names. I have a long list of names I’m not sure about. Lots of out there word names and such… Are these names usable? [name]Just[/name] as MNs? Can they be more then GPs? Would they work [name]IRL[/name]? WDYT?

boys
[name]Puck[/name] (I’m scared this would be mistaked for a different word…)
[name]Rush[/name] (name of a local garbage pick-up !!??)
Carhart
[name]Tiger[/name]
Gretzky
[name]Breaker[/name]
Frontier
[name]Hurley[/name] (“Hur” for a boy??)
Wrangler
Train

unisex
Hymn (“Hymn” for a girl?? Or “Hymn” for a boy? I should just name him “Boy” then ;))
[name]Horizon[/name]
Ride

girls
[name]Katniss[/name]
[name]Galaxy[/name]
[name]Canada[/name]
[name]Love[/name]

Nope, none of these work as names. It reads just like you made a big list of words.

Yeah, i can’t get behind any of these. [name]Even[/name] as middle names, they just seem to be lacking somehow

Sorry to say but I don’t think any of these names could be defined as “fresh, simple or unusual”. Most of these words would be ridiculous as first names. The ones I have bolded may work in the middle spot.

[name]Puck[/name] (I can just hear the teasing now)
[name]Rush[/name] (name of a rock band and a loudmouth Republican blowhard named Limbaugh. Heard of him?)
Carhart - What? [name]Hart[/name] is a legitimate name that means “stag”. There is also [name]Carson[/name] and [name]Carsten[/name].
[name]Tiger[/name]- The name of the adulterous golfer! I’d give it a pass.
Gretzky - I knew you were from [name]Canada[/name] when I saw this name. Yuck!
[name]Breaker[/name] - Break her? Sounds like the name of a wife beater!
Frontier - Would make a quirky mn choice.
[name]Hurley[/name] - [name]Ben[/name] Hur? [name]Elizabeth[/name] [name]Hurley[/name]! Girly [name]Hurley[/name]! Nope.
Wrangler - Along with brother [name]Maverick[/name], it’s too full of macho swagger to take seriously.
Train - well, it’s better than Bus or Plane. Only in the middle spot. I mean there’s the Scottish name [name]Thane[/name] and Thrain is the name of [name]Thorin[/name]'s father in the Hobbit, so why not Train?

Unisex
Hymn - Because it’s too close to “Him”, I don’t think it would be usable in the real world.
[name]Horizon[/name] - I think this would be a cool mn option.
Ride - Not great. [name]Ryder[/name] sounds like “ride her” so it’s not good either.

Girls
[name]Katniss[/name] - [name]Just[/name] say no.
[name]Galaxy[/name] - too far out for real life
[name]Canada[/name]- I love my country but not this much.
[name]Love[/name] - try Lovejoy or Loveday in the middle spot. [name]Just[/name] [name]Love[/name] is too cheesy.

Thanks for the feedback. I thought this might be the reaction I’d get… I’m always drawn to outlandish names, but as I have no children yet, I don’t know what I’d actually be brave enough to use in real life. Not these, probably, these are my guilty pleasures I dream of using.
@mischa- Mmm, don’t think I’ve heard of Limbaugh. I do like Loveday…

I eliminated the names I deemed unusable, mostly due to reasons you listed.

boys
[name]Puck[/name] – Would be mistaken for that word, which is unfortunate, because I like [name]Puck[/name].
[name]Rush[/name] – Good, in league with [name]Jett[/name].
Carhart – Noooo. Noooooooooooo. These are pants. Not people. Sorry. [name]Just[/name] no.
[name]Tiger[/name] – [name]DO[/name] IT. BECAUSE WHY THE [name]PUCK[/name] NOT. (Couldn’t resist that, sorry…)
Gretzky – lolwut? It’s cool? I’m confused, where in the world did this come from?
[name]Breaker[/name] – No. [name]Do[/name] not name a rowdy young man ‘[name]Breaker[/name].’
Frontier – As someone who lives in the ‘Last Frontier’ please don’t do this to your child. The frontier might mean mystery and adventure, but it also means desolate and dirty.
[name]Hurley[/name] – Meh. Might as well just use [name]Harley[/name]?
Wrangler – No. Not only is this a company, but all I can think of is snakes and aligators…
Train – lawl. No. Trains are cool, but not that kind of cool.

unisex
Hymn – Definitely a girl, and cute, but only if you’re religious. I’m not, so I wouldn’t.
[name]Horizon[/name] – Surprisingly, I like this… Girl.
Ride – [name]Do[/name] not name a child Ride. [name]Rider[/name] is seriously pushing my limits, as far as my ability to refrain from making sexual innuendo goes. Ride is asking for it. Hands. Down.

girls
[name]Katniss[/name] – No. I hate this name. Catnip? I don’t care about [name]Suzanne[/name] [name]Collins[/name]’ and her backstory, the name is icky and has ‘isssss’ at the end of it. shiver
[name]Galaxy[/name] – Lawl yes. [name]Just[/name] because you can.
[name]Canada[/name] – [name]Canada[/name]'s nice and all, but their country has a profoundly boring name. (Sorry [name]Canada[/name].)
[name]Love[/name] – Meh, middle only. I like [name]Valentine[/name] as a first, though.

I’ll go against the grain here and say that I like [name]Katniss[/name], but only as a nickname for something like [name]Katherine[/name]. The other ones are iffy even for middle names, though I think [name]Galaxy[/name] as middle name could be cute…[name]Jane[/name] [name]Galaxy[/name], [name]Phillipa[/name] [name]Galaxy[/name], [name]Elizabeth[/name] [name]Galaxy[/name], but only because a kid that graduated from my school last year had the middle name Inertia.

I like [name]Horizon[/name] as a quirky mn for a girl. The only other one that might work as a mn is Frontier for a boy.

@celianne- Thanks for replying… About Gretzky…I’m Canadian and a big hockey fan. In his day, he was one of the greatest NHL hockey players… That is where I came up with the name. So you do think Hymn could be usable?! I can’t decide. Lol, I love my country, that is why I love the name [name]Canada[/name]. To me it isn’t boring, but I could see where it might be to people. Oooo, and your thought about [name]Valentine[/name], I love it. (I like it for a boy <MN??> too, actually.)
@tay2thestars- Hey, I had never thought of [name]Katniss[/name] as a NN before. I like that idea. Hmmm…not terribly fond of [name]Katherine[/name]. Wonder what else it could be a NN for??

Heheh. I was gonna go through each name and give it a pass or fail like I usually do, but I don’t like any of them and I couldn’t bear to give you an F. :frowning:

I know someone called [name]Love[/name] and I think it’s very unusual but lovely. But the rest, I personally wouldn’t use, particually Frontier because it sounds very militaristic. But some of the others could work as middles.

I really don’t think any of them are usable for the reasons previously listed.

I wanted to add that I don’t think Hymn is usable for a boy or girl. On a boy it sounds like “Him” which feels like a name froma dystopian novel where no one has their own identity. For a girl, Hymn is only one letter away from hymen. I can just imagine the teasing now.
