I have a 6 month old daughter named [name]Rowan[/name] [name]Jane[/name] and I am starting to compile a list for a second daughter should we have one the next time (probably going to start TTC in the next few months) [name]Rowan[/name]'s name came so easy to us, it was “my” name for years and when I told my significant other, he loved it too. We didn’t even consider other girl names. This time around, I am completely lost. I seem drawn to more feminine names, with a few unisex ones scattered here and there. So, a few questions… 1) Should I use another unisex name to match [name]Rowan[/name]'s or not worry about it? 2) Some of the names on my list are in the Top 100, and [name]Rowan[/name] is in the mid 300’s range. Should I consider popularity?
Here is my list, please analyze and critique all you want! And any suggestions you have are welcome also. I starred the ones I’ve liked for a long time.
I think it depends on whether you want a theme running through your naming. For example, I am hoping to have an honouree name in each of my children’s or a event related name. Like I am hoping to have my bridesmaids in [name]Violet[/name], so I would love that to be my daughter’s name.
I think it’s nice to have a name that isn’t completely common, so why not aim for a name that is least away from the top 100?
I like [name]Ruby[/name] and [name]Indigo[/name] especially! You could always use a few of your other favourites as mns
Or even [name]Ever[/name] [name]Ruby[/name] is gorgeous!
I think you’d be best going with something modern and ‘unisex’ because something of a completely different style might make the sibset seem super mismatched and awkward. [name]Harper[/name], [name]Addison[/name], [name]Mackenzie[/name] and [name]Kiran[/name] were the first to come to mind.
From your list, I think [name]Indigo[/name] and [name]Ever[/name] would work best with your female [name]Rowan[/name].
But, if feminine and a little more class is what you want, what about using a feminine name with a unisex nickname, such as [name]Charlotte[/name] “[name]Charlie[/name]” or [name]Aurora[/name] “[name]Rory[/name]”?
I don’t think another daughter necessarily HAS to have another unisex name - my only thing would be to make sure that, if you were to have a son, he has a name that’s definitely masculine. A sibset of something like [name]Rowan[/name], [name]Zenobia[/name] and [name]Morgan[/name], with [name]Morgan[/name] as the boy, would probably create a lot of confusion!
From your list, I love [name]Zenobia[/name], [name]Luna[/name], [name]Ruby[/name] and [name]Maris[/name]. I think all of those would go really well with [name]Rowan[/name]. Many of the others are nice as well but I feel like those four are the best! I don’t care for [name]Luca[/name] on a girl, though, and I’ve never understood why so many people love [name]Wren[/name]. What am I missing, y’all?
[name]Meadow[/name]- I love this!!
[name]Mara[/name] - seems really mismatched with [name]Rowan[/name]
[name]Zenobia[/name] - NMS!!
[name]Marlowe[/name] - I prefer [name]Harlow[/name]
[name]Indigo[/name] - So cute!!
[name]Luna[/name] - I really hate this one, but I have no good reason for it
[name]Rio[/name] - a little matchy with [name]Rowan[/name]
[name]Imogen[/name] - definitely does not go with [name]Rowan[/name]
[name]Morgan[/name]- works well
[name]Lola[/name] - [name]LOVE[/name]
[name]Ruby[/name] [name]LOVE[/name] [name]LOVE[/name] [name]LOVE[/name]
[name]Mabel[/name] - definitely mismatched too
[name]Shoshana[/name] - NMS!!
[name]Thea[/name] - I have always had a crush on
[name]Luca[/name] - All boy to me! But it works with [name]Rowan[/name]
[name]Ever[/name]- ok…
[name]Lotus[/name] - I love the image of this name
[name]Deryn[/name] - oh please don’t!
[name]Maris[/name]- Eh, its alright
[name]Sailor[/name]- a little too wordy and less namey
[name]Artemis[/name]- NMS!
[name]Wren[/name] - pretty but too close to [name]Rowan[/name] [name]IMO[/name]
I would go with, [name]Lola[/name], [name]Ruby[/name], or [name]Meadow[/name]
I’d probably go with something nature-y. I like [name]Meadow[/name], [name]Indigo[/name] and [name]Wren[/name] from from your list. I’d love to see sisters [name]Rowan[/name] and [name]Willow[/name]
I think you should go with another nature type name. I wouldn’t go with an overtly frilly name like [name]Isabella[/name]. From your list, I like these with [name]Rowan[/name]:
I find myself drawn to [name]Morgan[/name], [name]Luna[/name], and [name]Lola[/name] but I am worried about the popularity. I don’t want something common that my daughter will share with 2 or 3 other girls in her class. I’ve only met one other [name]Rowan[/name], and he was a boy. I mean, they aren’t [name]Sophia[/name] or [name]Isabella[/name] popular but they are pretty common. [name]Morgan[/name] is #63, [name]Luna[/name] #343, [name]Lola[/name] #211.
[name]Just[/name] a thought too, I put the name [name]Lotus[/name] on my list because I could possibly use [name]Lola[/name] as a nickname. Is that too far fetched? Or is the car connection too strong?
To give some perspective with the popularity thing - yes, those names are all in the top half of the Top 1000, BUT that doesn’t mean there’s as many as you might think. [name]Luna[/name], at #343, was only given to about nine hundred babies in 2010 - out of over four million. For the sake of comparison, my name is [name]Erin[/name], which was at #37 the year I was born - and there was only one other [name]Erin[/name] in my whole high school.
I don’t think another daughter has to have a unisex name. For example, I think [name]Rowan[/name] and [name]Mara[/name] work really well as sisters. I think you could go for girl’s names like that which have a bit of an edge. From your list, I’m thinking:
[name]Mara[/name] or [name]Maris[/name]
[name]Imogen[/name]
[name]Ruby[/name]*
[name]Mabel[/name]
[name]Thea[/name]
[name]Deryn[/name]
[name]Artemis[/name]
[name]Wren[/name]
I think my favourites are [name]Mara[/name], [name]Artemis[/name] and [name]Thea[/name]. And [name]Deryn[/name].
I don’t think [name]Lola[/name] from [name]Lotus[/name] is far fetched, but I’m not so keen on [name]Lotus[/name].
The SSA website, which contains the popularity lists, has additional downloadable information for each census dating back to 1880, including the exact number of babies with each name. It’s located here: Popular Baby Names
There were 4,043 girls named [name]Morgan[/name] born in 2010 - as well as 494 boys. [name]Hope[/name] that helps.
Thanks esrever88! 4,043 seems like a lot, but I know what you mean. My name is [name]Brooke[/name] and it was pretty popular the year I was born, but I never meet any other [name]Brooke[/name]'s. I think popularity only matters if it’s the Top 10 or so, because I meet tons of [name]Ashley[/name]'s, [name]Amanda[/name]'s, [name]Brittany[/name]'s, etc. my age.
So from my list, which names really don’t work with [name]Rowan[/name]? I want to take a few of these names off and maybe add a couple that work better.
[name]Meadow[/name]- This is kinda awkward for a first name imo
[name]Mara[/name]- mismatched with [name]Rowan[/name]
[name]Zenobia[/name]- NMS
[name]Marlowe[/name]- NMS
[name]Indigo[/name]- I like this with [name]Rowan[/name], it is feminine but not too much so
[name]Luna[/name]- [name]ADORE[/name] this, and even though its pretty feminine it really works with [name]Luna[/name]
[name]Rio[/name]- don’t like this for a girl
[name]Imogen[/name]- NMS
[name]Morgan[/name]- too popular
[name]Lola[/name]- [name]Love[/name] this name, maybe a little too girly with [name]Rowan[/name] though?
[name]Ruby[/name]- I [name]ADORE[/name] this too, if you don’t mind both girl have “R” names, I would go with this
[name]Mabel[/name]- Mismatched with [name]Rowan[/name]
[name]Shoshana[/name]- NMS
[name]Thea[/name]-his one is just okay
[name]Luca[/name]- too boyish
[name]Ever[/name]- I like this too, but doesn’t really match [name]Rowan[/name]
[name]Lotus[/name]- I don’t really like this, but don’t hate it.
[name]Deryn[/name]- NMS
[name]Maris[/name]- too mismatched with [name]Rowan[/name]
[name]Sailor[/name]- This is my absolute favourite on your list that matches with [name]Rowan[/name]!
[name]Artemis[/name]- adorable, but mismatched with [name]Rowan[/name]
[name]Wren[/name]- [name]ADORE[/name] this too!
My favourites:
[name]Luna[/name]
[name]Ruby[/name]
[name]Sailor[/name]
[name]Wren[/name]
[name]Sailor[/name] [name]Ruby[/name] or [name]Wren[/name] [name]Sailor[/name]
