Antigone

Wdyt? It is Greek. Pronounced [name]Ann[/name]-tig-oh-knee. I think if I were to have a fourth (!) daughter, this would be her name.

What two middle names would you pair with [name]Antigone[/name]?

I don’t like it. I see Anti-Gone, which sounds like a name for some kind of disinfectant or bug killer. I do like the correct prn of it, but I think it wouldn’t make a good choice as a first name on a girl outside of Greece. In this case, a yuniek spelling might be in order. Antigini/Antiginni seems pretty- but it looks like an alcoholic drink.

A common name would go well with [name]Antigone[/name]:

[name]Antigone[/name] [name]Alyssa[/name] [name]Rae[/name]
[name]Antigone[/name] [name]Aria[/name] [name]Lois[/name]
[name]Antigone[/name] [name]Alice[/name] [name]Ann[/name]
[name]Antigone[/name] [name]Delilah[/name] [name]Grace[/name]
[name]Antigone[/name] [name]Mariah[/name] [name]Rose[/name]
[name]Antigone[/name] [name]Rosa[/name] [name]Grey[/name]
[name]Antigone[/name] [name]Allison[/name] [name]Noemi[/name]
[name]Antigone[/name] [name]Aria[/name] [name]Lucy[/name]
[name]Antigone[/name] [name]Ella[/name] [name]Naomi[/name]

What are your other children’s names? That might help with middles.

I like it fine. Most people will know how to pronounce it, and those who don’t, can be easily corrected. I would pair it with something really girly in the middle, since [name]Antigone[/name] doesn’t necessarily sound feminine. [name]Antigone[/name] [name]Lucille[/name], [name]Antigone[/name] [name]Lynette[/name].

I kind of like it, the sound of the correct pronunciation is pretty. But it just makes me think of antagonize.

[name]Read[/name] the play by Sophocles before you name a baby that. It’s not really a happy play. She’s the product of an incestuous marriage.

I think that most people will know how to pronounce it since the play is required reading in high school but personally I find it a bit too over the top to use in real life (though I guess the nickname [name]Ann[/name] could make it more usable). I’m not a fan of two middle names but if that’s the route you’re going, then I agree with Aurra that you need to pair it with something much more common, such as [name]Antigone[/name] [name]Rose[/name] Eilene.

Agreed ^^ I would not want a child associated with that character. It would horrible when she has to read the play in high school.

Ditto – this was my first thought. She is quite a tragic character, and a commonly known one as well. I would be shocked to run into a little [name]Antigone[/name]. I can’t imagine naming a child that. Sorry. It does have a beautiful sound – I agree with that. But the association is too much for me.

I like it now that I know the pronunciation. Most people will probably pronounce it anti-gone though.

[name]LOVE[/name] it, mind you my favourite classical name for a girl is [name]Jocasta[/name] so I clearly don’t have a problem with negative character associations.

I think most people have read [name]Antigone[/name] in school/university at some point, so I don’t think pronunciation will be a horrible issue. As for character association - on the positive side, the character was strong, courageous, passionate, and stood up for what she thought was right.

I don’t think the fact that she happens to be a character in a tragedy stigmatizes the name [name]Antigone[/name] at all. She’s a strong, likeable heroine who happens to die for her beliefs, so basically she’s a martyr. The tragic association doesn’t stop anyone from using the name [name]Juliet[/name], so who cares about the genre of Sophocles’ play?

I think it’s gorgeous. The only real drawback is the pronunciation thing.

Pros:

:beautiful correct pronunciation
:strong place in mythology and extensive literary connection
:rose above, martyr, defied masculine authority

Cons:

:foreseeable pronunciation issues: Anti-gone, antagonize
:perceived horrible namesake as she “was a tragedy”. I prefer to see it as she lived through a tragedy.

Life isn’t always perfect. Names can’t always be short, sweet, and trendy/popular. I’d rather give a name with meaning and strength like [name]Antigone[/name]. Possible nicknames if your daughter wants to fit in at school: [name]Annie[/name], [name]Tig[/name], Igo, Igon.

I would go for it. [name]Antigone[/name] has everything on its side. Strong meaning, beautiful pronunciation, roots in history and literature.

Please don’t make it yuneek. [name]Antigone[/name] would be just fine.

[name]Antigone[/name] Achlys (ak-liss)
[name]Antigone[/name] [name]Adair[/name]
[name]Antigone[/name] Belphoebe
[name]Antigone[/name] [name]Emmeline[/name]
[name]Antigone[/name] [name]Eulalia[/name]
[name]Antigone[/name] Griselys
[name]Antigone[/name] Illyria
[name]Antigone[/name] [name]Primrose[/name] (to sweeten)
[name]Antigone[/name] [name]Petra[/name]
[name]Antigone[/name] [name]Rufina[/name]
[name]Antigone[/name] [name]Sylvie[/name]

I’ve read the play. The association is not bad. In fact she was a strong female character who stood up for what she believed in.

As to the other question, I don’t have any other children but I would use this one a fourth daughter because it is number four on my list.

And lol at the bad rating on my thread. Talk about close mindedness. That’s nameberry for you.

Vouch. This reflected my thoughts when I saw this thread too.

It’s not such a great character namesake.

I like [name]Antigone[/name]. Her story was sad, but I think the name is pretty.

I think [name]Antigone[/name] is fantastic, I love the myth and the play. [name]Just[/name] because bad things happen to someone, doesn’t mean they’re tragic. [name]Antigone[/name] was very courageous (maybe a little fanatic, but that’s fine by me).

Anyway, I know a little [name]Antigone[/name]! She’s gorgeous and funny. I’m not comfortable saying her middle here, but it’s a classic english name along the lines of [name]Elizabeth[/name]. The only bad thing is I really can’t use [name]Antigone[/name] for my baby, it would be weird…

I agree completely.

You must be kidding? People could suggest names like Clipper Doggsbody or Viking Funeral Pyre and someone will love it on this forum or proclaim it to be unique, unexpected, etc. The nameberry forum is very open-minded and impartial from all I can see. [name]Antigone[/name] did stand up for what she believed in I suppose. I think that some see the story as a whole. Child born of incest, essentially cursed and doomed from the start, tries to follow her heart, walled up, hangs herself. [name]Don[/name]'t a fair number of other characters then go off and kill themselves in various methods. In my mind the negatives far outweigh that one plus.

This forum, however, is extremely open and understanding.

It’s not an association I would want for my daughter, but I don’t think it’s terrible either. I mostly think of my husbands underwear, because in college he was in a pretty racy production of the play and all he wore was a pair of tighty whities with [name]Antigone[/name] spelled out across the butt.
