Any coffee drinkers out there?

I have always been a coffee lover, but when I was in the first trimester it actually didn’t look or even smell good to me and since I knew it wasn’t exactly ideal for the baby, I gave it up, no problem. Now I am 23 weeks and have been having 1-2 cups of coffee every day, I feel like I look forward to it so much! I asked my doc about it and although there is conflicting information out there, he said he thought it was fine especially since I am this far along. He actually said ANY amount is likely safe but I limit it to 2 cups a day. I still feel kinda guilty though. I did the same with my other 3 pregnancies and had no issues what so ever… anyone else drink coffee but kinda wish you didn’t?

In spite of having worked as a barista, I never drank coffee until after we brought our son home. Now I deeply love coffee. I felt bad about it for awhile and tried to quit, but then I read this thing about how coffee is actually good for you and I chose to believe it. Here is a random popular science article to back that up: 7 Reasons Why Coffee Is Good For You | Popular Science

I feel like all of the women I know drank coffee through their pregnancies, and all of those babies are fine. 1-2 cups a day doesn’t sound excessive to me at all. Maybe it could cause a problem if you were drinking twelve cups a day, or if you were predisposed to a heart condition or something. I would not worry about this, especially since your doctor said it was fine.

The only study which demonstrated ill effects in pregnancy of coffee consumption did not show any downside until daily use >7 cups/day. In women who drank that much coffee, the vasoconstrictive effects caused a modest uptick IUGR and preterm labor.

Nearly all physicians just halve that amount and say as long as you drink <3 cups/day, you’re fine-- but the data supports <7.

I drink coffee daily, usually 1-2 cups. When I was pregnant with my son I was in active clinical residency, so had an extremely heavy work schedule and was regularly (every fourth night) working 30 hour shifts. I drank significantly more, probably on the order of 4-5 cups a day, with no ill effect. Anecdata to be sure but feel comfortable that modest caffeine consumption is safe in pregnancy.

Yes, I drink coffee and I love it. I drink a lot though, so a few years ago I started buying caffe d’orzo which is a coffee substitute made from barley. They even have cappuccino d’orzo (instant cappuccino!) and it’s actually really delicious! I used to work as a barista at one of [name]London[/name]'s best coffee houses, so I’m usually hard to please, but this one is tasty and doesn’t make my tummy upset, like coffee does if I have too many mugs…

My GP said as long as I kept it under 8 cups I should be fine. He also let me drink wine and champagne (restricted amounts, of course), so I was a happy girl during my pregnancy!

[name]Don[/name]'t feel guilty, enjoy your coffee. You can also drink decaff, or try the orzo coffee if you can get it where you are.

Whew! Good, now I can stop feeling guilty! Thanks ladies!

ottielie, I have never heard of that. DH is a coffee connoisseur but has never stumbled on it. I’m going to look into it, though we live in a po-dunk area of the US, so I kinda doubt it’s at the grocery store.

I buy it at this Italian shop in [name]London[/name], and I stock up whenever I’m in [name]Italy[/name]. We don’t get it in regular shops here.

I love my coffee. Like you, I didn’t drink any in the first trimester (although I definitely drank my share of espresso before I knew I was pregnant). Now I’ll have 1, occasionally 2 cups a day. I also keep a good quality decaf on hand too for when I know I’m craving the taste/smell of coffee more than the actual caffeine.

[name]Lucky[/name] for me the coffee shop down the street also makes a lovely decaf cinnamon latte.

I can never drink caffeine for other medical reasons, but I’ve noticed since I’ve been pregnant every time I opt for decaf or something my friends make a comment about how you can’t drink caffeine in pregnancy…it seems to be a pretty popular myth. If I COULD drink caffeine, I’d feel safe drinking a cup of coffee or two each day, but I’d avoid more than one or two cups and avoid things such as energy drinks, espresso, etc.

I’ve always been a coffee drinker (3-4 cups per day), but stopped in [name]January[/name] this year. Mostly because we’re trying to conceive a baby, but also for health reasons. I switched to dandelion tea, which I really love now! It’s caffeine free, but tastes similar to coffee. However, in terms of caffeine causing damage to an unborn baby, I think it’s pretty unlikely. If you love coffee, as people have said above, you don’t need to quit entirely, just limit your consumption to a few cups per day.

I love coffee! I’m not pregnant though so I can’t chime in there but I would probably have a cup per day or so when the time comes. My mom drank it all throughout her pregnancies and all of us are fine.

[name]Just[/name] limit it and you will be fine. I have never had a baby under 8lbs when I drank coffee ttytt. The Pioneer Woman has a wonderful iced coffee recipe made by cold brewing it, that is my standard drink these days.

Oh yes, I drink coffee every day. I never finish a medium cup though. So, when I was pregnant, I had no problem giving it up. I just felt better not drinking it, but I wanted to do everything to keep my pregnancy from terminating. I had tea occasionally instead.
There is caffeine in other things like chocolate, but as long as you don’t have caffeine in large quantities, it is pretty safe.

I drink a large iced coffee every day!

That being said, I am cautious about not drinking or eating excessive caffeine after that during the day - save some chocolate or something.

I drink iced espresso every day (16 oz cup but most of that is ice and if I don’t drink I get terrible headaches). My doctor says 1-2 cups a day are fine, and I frequently have a can of diet coke at either lunch or dinner. My last baby was almost 10 lbs so I do not worry about low birth weight! Like you, early in my first trimester I can’t stomach coffee and I go off for a while (did this is both of my pregnancies). But I am 17 1/2 weeks now and I have been back on the sauce for about 6 weeks now. I find that I vastly prefer it cold than hot, but if hot is my best option I don’t hesistate. (I usually make mine at home- we have an espresso machine and just pour my shots over ice). What I really wish is that I could enjoy it with milk instead of half-and-half. The added calories are probably a bigger reason that I limit myself than the caffeine.
