Anybody else struggling with ttc & any advice on using Clomid?

Hello berries! [name]Just[/name] a little background here… My husband and I have been ttc for 13 months now, with no baby in sight. :frowning: I’ve had blood work done, and my hormone levels all came back normal. Also had an HSG which showed that I don’t have any blockages in my tubes, or any abnormalities. Hubby had a SA, and everything was great. So, just talked to my OBGYN and she suggested I try taking Clomid. But I’m a little nervous about that. Seems like a big next step, when so far everything has checked out normal. I’m concerned about side effects, chance of multiple birth, and I just don’t really feel like we’re ready for fertility drugs just yet. So, I guess I’m just wondering if any of you ladies have taken Clomid, and if so, what was you experience?
Thanks in advance, for any info, advice, or experiences you can share!!

I have no personal experience with clomid but have heard fantastic things about it. My [name]SiL[/name] also strugged with conception, for around two years or so. She fell pregnant on her second cycle of clomid on twins. I know quite a few ladies who have been prescribed it, and all have happy, healthy babies now. I know know one couple who it didn’t work for, who ended up getting IVF but they certainly seem to be the exception and not the rule.
However, if you really feel like your not ready for drugs you shouldn’t take it. Who knows, maybe you’ll conceive naturally if you take the pressure off of yourself.
I’m sorry you’ve been having trouble conceiving. I wish you the best, and lots of baby dust your way!

[name]Hi[/name] iluvnames,

I’m here as a result of Clomid (born in 1981)! My mom has polycystic ovarian syndrome, and I don’t know how long my parents were ttc, but I do know she took clomid, and then conceived me. She jokes sometimes that she had me after taking fertility drugs, but ended up with twins through adoption (my brothers!). I don’t have any personal experience with clomid, but I don’t think you should try it unless you’re certain that you’re ready. It doesn’t sound like you’re quite there yet.

Good luck with ttc, I hope it happens for you soon, no matter which route you take!

[name]Hi[/name] iluvnames,

I don’t have personal experience with clomid but my [name]SIL[/name] tried it unsuccessfully for a couple months. She hated the side effects and found that it really messed up her cycles for a while. She ended up going to a naturopath and really working on her nutrition and health instead.

I don’t know if you’ve charted your cycles or not, but she also really found that that helped with her sanity level because she could tell for sure when she was ovulating. They ended up conceiving with their first IUI attempt and she’s very convinced that the healthy diet and lifestyle was the key for her.

It took us 13 months before we were able to get pregnant with our DD and charting really helped me understand what was going on too. Like you, I wasn’t quite ready to try drugs yet, but luckily my cycles regulated (almost exactly a year after coming off the pill) and w were able to get pregnant without outside help. I think my next step would have been to look for a naturopath or other alternative medicine (like accupuncture) but if that didn’t work I would have been open to trying clomid.

Good luck with your decision. It’s tough when something that seems like it should be so easy is so hard. :frowning:

I don’t have any experience with clomid. My doctor suggested I try using the Clearblue Easy Fertility monitor when hubs and I were ready to start trying for a baby. After reading several rave reviews on Amazon, we decided to give it a try. We’re not trying yet, I’m just using the monitor for a couple of months to get it used to my cycle before we actually try. However, a lot of the reviews I read, women were getting pregnant the first or second month using the machine. I can say that it is super easy to use. Check it out and good luck!!

I am pregnant now as a result of clomid. But I have PCOS and so I’ve never ovulated regularly, which is different from your situation. I’ve basically known since I was 14 that I’d have a hard time getting pregnant on my own.
I know when they gave it to me I think they said the chance of multiples increases by 1-2%, so not really that much higher of a chance of having twins from it. I think side effects vary from person to person. It definitely gave me crazy mood swings. But I’ve heard of people who have had no side effects from it.
Have you used ovulation predictor kits? It can be helpful because it’ll tell you a few days in advance when you will ovulate so you make sure your timing is right.

I’d say if you guys are not feeling in a rush, and you don’t think you’re ready for fertility drugs then you can always wait.

You ladies have been so helpful, and reassuring! Thank you!
Babeinthewoods, thanks so much for sharing your [name]SIL[/name]'s experience with the naturopath. That’s something I’d be interested in looking into. I don’t want to waist a whole lot of time, but I feel like eating better and making changes to a healthier lifestyle is never a bad thing, and may help us out. We’re scheduled to meet with my doctor in a couple weeks to discuss Clomid, so I’ll hopefully get more info then. My husband and I don’t want to rush into anything, but we’d like to know what out options are.
I have been using OPK but haven’t kept the best records. I know my cycles are not real regular though, and it seems I don’t always ovulate at the same time either.
Anyways, just want to say thank you again to each of you for your encouragement and for sharing your stories!!

I´m going to say something a wee bit different. 13 months isn´t that long so if you are young that may be ok, but once you decide to get treatment I would go straight to a Reproductive Endocrinologist Fertility specialist. Taking clomid with your OBGYN may be fine, but taking the same drug under the care of a specialist is worth much more as they will monitor your cycles to see if you are indeed ovulating on the drug using ultrasound and blood monitoring and can then tailor your treatment to your resposne. Experienced infertility patients know that its usually for the best to skip the general OBGYN treating you stage and go direct to the experts. Experienced infertility patients also know…not too get too bogged down in that charting garbage. It´s kind of something everyone goes through and gets over but read up on infertility boards for those actually undergoing treatments and see all the virtual eyerolls directed at the TCOYF crowd. Healthy normal people should conceive in a couple of years by chance and making graphs will just drive you nuts and may introduce systematic error that reduces your chances. [name]Don[/name]´t believe all the breathtaking promises by chartists that they know more than doctors and ladies can just take their temperature everyday to overcome fertility problems
Good luck and 13 months isn´t that long!!

[name]Hi[/name] Ladies, this is my first time on this site and I am on my first round of clomid 50mg. I have had a hsg done it showed left overy open and right was not open all the way but the dye did pass but slowly, also done blood work and all came back normal. My husband also had seman analysis done and it was normal. My question is has any one had all this done and became pregnant on first round.

Please help

Did your doctor give a reason why you would use Clomid? Are your cycles really irregular, are you having any signs of PCOS. You said your hormones blood work came back fine. Otherwise I find the suggestion of using Clomid a bit of a shot in the dark if you don’t have the problems it was designed to help.

I become pg on my 3rd round of Clomid, but I had no period for 6 months and before that my cycles were random. I also had mild PCOS, later confirmed by a scan.

I would definitely ask why the doctor thinks Clomid would help. It is a hormone treatment so there are side effects, though I didn’t find them too bad.

Good luck.

Again, thanks for all the input and advice, it’s greatly appreciated! And it’s just nice to be able to talk about it since we haven’t really told most of our friends or family that we’re having trouble getting pregnants.
To answer a couple of your questions: My husband and I are both in our mid/late 20’s, so while we still have time, I don’t want to be still having kids in my late 30’s/40’s if i can help it. I have had trouble in the past with very irregular periods (I would sometimes go months with no AF), but have been taking progesterone for several years now, and that has made me pretty regular. At least now I have a period every month, although it’s certainly not like clock work or anything. I’m not sure that I’m ovulating every month though, and I think my OBGYN thinks that maybe clomid would help if that’s my issue. I’ve been using OPKs, but I don’t always get a positive every month - but those things can be hard to read sometimes, so it’s also possible that it’s operator error. Lol. But aren’t there some other tests they can do to see if I’m ovulating, before just telling me to take clomid? If I did take it though, I think I’d go to a fertility specialist who can monitor my cycles while I’m on it. From what I understand, this is the best way to do it? Anyway, next week my husband and I are meeting with my doctor for a Clomid disscussion, so Hopfully after that we’ll have more enformation and can decide what we want to do.
Again, thanks for all your help and support!!

iluvnames did yall decide to take the clomid challange

Hopfull2012, thanks for checkig in on me! We haven’t taken the clomid just yet… We met with my [name]Doctor[/name] for a consultation a couple of weeks ago and she gave us more information about using the Clomid. We decided to wait on more cycle before starting the Clomid, so we’ll most likely start next month (assuming I don’t get pregnant this month). I had a ultrasound this week to check for cysts on my ovaries. [name]Just[/name] heard back from the doctor today and she says there’s a chance I have mild PCOS. So I have another appointment in a couple weeks to discuss the results from the last couple tests and to decide where we want to go from here. So for now, more waiting, but we should have a few more answers in a couple weeks. All this waiting between testing and results is hard though!

Oh goodness, it’s hard to know what to do sometimes. I have 5 kids, and did 3 rounds of clomid with the first, and not even a full round with the second. None with the other 3. We had been ttc for 18 months when I started with my first. It made me extremely emotional and a big cry baby, and normally I’m not a cryer. By the third round I said, this is it. If it doesn’t work this time, I’m not doing it again. I felt nuts. It worked that time. I felt all the emotional stuff cropping up again upon starting clomid when trying for our second, and so I tossed it. It wasn’t worth it to me. I got pregnant after 10 months of trying, around 2 months after my clomid attempt. [name]Both[/name] were singletons, no multiples.
Before my first, I had done accupuncture, energy work, and any other sort of natural thing I could try. You just need to feel truly settled that that is what you need to do if you’re going to try clomid. I trust that gut feeling you get about these things. The good news is, while I used to be a very infrequent ovulator, and had irregular periods, things have gotten more and more regulated after each baby. Pregnancy seems to have helped. I really do wish you luck!

iluvnames i went to the docter on [name]May[/name] 7 found out i PCOS and now i know why i was not gettin pregnant but i had started my first round of clomid this cycle and also did the ultrasound i have 2 good sized eggs so i hope this is my time i go do blood work on the 16 and ill find out if im prego then good luck baby dust your way

Wootz, thanks so much for sharing your success stories - gives me hope!
Hopeful2012, oh I hope you found out you’re pregnant! If not, maybe next cycle will be the one. I too, just found out that I have PCOS. My doctor didn’t check into that at first as I don’t meet all the typical criteria. She says I fall into the category of those with “lean PCOS.”. I will be starting Clomid this cycle. So next week I’ll start taking Clomid, then by the end of [name]June[/name] I’ll go for my blood work to see if I’m pregnant! I’m hopeful that this will give us the baby we long for!!
