Anyone Else have a Gender Based Popularity Discrepancy?

Anyone else find that there is a huge gender discrepancy in the popularity of names they like?

The most popular name on my girls list is [name_f]Lorelei[/name_f] and it clocks in at 533. I’d guestimate that the average popularity of my girls names probably comes in at about 900. (If any unranked name is given a 1001 rating).

The most popular name on my boys list is [name_m]Victor[/name_m] at 135. In fact the popularity of my guys names would probably average out at round 200. (And [name_u]Dexter[/name_u] shot up something insane like 600 slots in 6 years! WTFudge!!!) - FYI [name_m]Victor[/name_m] is to honor my FH’s mother so unless he veto’s it, it will probably be used.

I would be interested on hearing from others and their thoughts and feelings on this.

(PS: I am taking this as a personal mission to explore more unusual boys names - see what else I can find!)

Yes! Absolutely! [name_f]My[/name_f] favourite girls’ names (with the exception of [name_f]Penelope[/name_f] :() are comfortably low ([name_f]Beatrix[/name_f], [name_f]Margo[/name_f], [name_f]Clementine[/name_f]) - outside the top 1000. [name_f]My[/name_f] favourite boys’ names, however, are shooting up - [name_m]Hugo[/name_m] is in the Australian top 100 (WHYYYY), as is [name_m]Sebastian[/name_m]. [name_m]Arthur[/name_m], [name_m]Theodore[/name_m] and [name_u]Jude[/name_u] are well within the top 500.

Yeah, I have the same problem but to a lesser extent. I have one maybe two top 500 names for boys, [name_f]Rosa[/name_f] is the only one of the girls that is currently in the top 1000 at 614…

I’m not sure how it would look if I included more names though, I would have to look up a lot to get any sort of data beyond this…

This is pretty rough, but out of my girls, only [name_f]Arabella[/name_f] (245) was even on the list, whereas [name_u]Phoenix[/name_u] (381), [name_m]Lorenzo[/name_m] (307), and [name_m]Nikolai[/name_m] (607) were all on the list, but none of my other favourites appeared (yes!!!). But in [name_m]Britain[/name_m], [name_f]Beatrix[/name_f] appears, as well as [name_f]Arabella[/name_f], and both are pretty high, and [name_u]Phoenix[/name_u] and [name_m]Lorenzo[/name_m] are higher than the SSA rankings. I suppose it balances out though, because there are fewer people here.

Raising a hand!

Rankings for my top five names from the UK charts:

[name_m]Jethro[/name_m] - not in top 1000
[name_m]Barnaby[/name_m] - 211
[name_u]Lionel[/name_u] - not in top 1000
[name_m]Edmund[/name_m] - 805 (nickname [name_u]Teddy[/name_u] is at 91)
[name_m]Walter[/name_m] - 534

[name_f]Helen[/name_f] - 690 (nickname [name_f]Nell[/name_f] is at 490)
[name_f]Fiona[/name_f] - 749
[name_f]Dorothy[/name_f] - 709 (nickname [name_f]Dolly[/name_f] is at 479)
[name_f]Martha[/name_f] - 77 - the only name in the top 100
[name_f]Adelaide[/name_f] - 955

So the girls names are more popular, but only [name_f]Martha[/name_f] is in the top 100 and that’s the only thing I care about. Other names I love that rank high include [name_m]Arthur[/name_m], [name_m]Nathaniel[/name_m], [name_m]Theodore[/name_m], [name_f]Matilda[/name_f] and [name_f]Imogen[/name_f].

Using the 2012 English/Welsh data:

[name_m]Dougal[/name_m] - not in top 1000 (average created on assumption of it being 1001)
[name_m]Nicholas[/name_m] - 149 (!)
[name_m]Christian[/name_m] - 220

[name_f]Carlotta[/name_f] - not in top 1000
[name_f]Marguerite[/name_f] - not in top 1000
[name_f]Elisabet[/name_f] - not in top 1000

[boy average: 457]
[girl average: n/a]

So yes, I would say I have this too…

Apparently I have the same problem, although I thought it would be the opposite–that my boys’ list ranks lower than my girls’. I averaged them out, though, and my girls’ list averages at 478, and my boys’ at 239. Then again, my boys’ list is about 1/3 off the ssa list, one third in the 100-200 range, and a few in the top 100. [name_f]My[/name_f] girls list is pretty much, on average, below the top 200, but with nearly half of them off the SSA list altogether ([name_f]Arianne[/name_f], [name_f]Emmeline[/name_f], [name_f]Eleni[/name_f], [name_f]Anne[/name_f]-[name_f]Sophie[/name_f], [name_u]Winter[/name_u], with [name_f]Tess[/name_f] almost being off the list), while only two (I think) of my boys’ list is off the SSA list ([name_u]Addison[/name_u] and [name_u]Bailey[/name_u]). Then again, I don’t think 478 and 239 are too hugely apart, and most of my unranked girls’ names have a VERY popular counterpart ([name_f]Elena[/name_f]/[name_f]Eleanor[/name_f], [name_f]Anna[/name_f]/[name_f]Sophia[/name_f], [name_f]Emma[/name_f]/[name_f]Emily[/name_f], [name_f]Ariana[/name_f]/[name_f]Arianna[/name_f]), and if I had the more common spelling for a few of my girls’ names ([name_f]Katherine[/name_f] instead of [name_f]Catherine[/name_f], etc.), my girls’ list would have a much higher ranking. (If my girls’ list looked like [name_f]Isabelle[/name_f], [name_f]Arianna[/name_f], [name_f]Olivia[/name_f], [name_f]Violet[/name_f], [name_f]Katherine[/name_f], [name_f]Lillian[/name_f], [name_f]Emma[/name_f], [name_f]Sophia[/name_f], [name_u]Winter[/name_u], [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f], [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f], [name_f]Eva[/name_f], [name_f]Hazel[/name_f], and [name_f]Tess[/name_f], my average popularity would be much higher–even higher up on the list than my boys’–at 198!)

I didn’t think so, then I checked them out and I do! [name_f]Lorelei[/name_f] is the most popular on the girls’ side at 533, while [name_m]Damian[/name_m] is on the boys’ side at 97. [name_m]Damian[/name_m] and [name_m]Malachi[/name_m] are my two most popular, and they’re picks from SO that he just loves, which probably explains why they’re so much higher than all the other names. I’d never noticed the discrepancy. In fact only [name_f]Lorelei[/name_f] and [name_f]Tabitha[/name_f] even chart on the ladies’ side, while six of the gents do. [name_m]Will[/name_m] need to ponder, but I don’t think I’m going to let it bother to me much. I like what I like. Interesting to notice though.

Neither [name_f]Brigitte[/name_f] nor [name_m]Guillaume[/name_m] rank in the top 1000, but I find it much easier to avoid popular boy’s names.

I think my favourites rank around the same point my boys names though are trendier since I love surnames as first names. [name_f]My[/name_f] most popular girls name is [name_f]Amelia[/name_f] 6 in the country and 9 in my state and for boys its [name_m]Jack[/name_m] 3 in the country and 1 in my state but both those names are quite classic and not likely to date also in the top 100 are [name_f]Isobel[/name_f] ([name_f]Isabelle[/name_f] and [name_f]Isabel[/name_f] combined is at 23), [name_f]Matilda[/name_f] 18, [name_f]Eloise[/name_f] 68, [name_f]Alice[/name_f] 55 and [name_f]Phoebe[/name_f] 59. For boys it’s [name_m]Cooper[/name_m] 10, [name_u]Flynn[/name_u] 37, [name_m]Archer[/name_m] 55, [name_m]Lincoln[/name_m] 50, [name_m]Jasper[/name_m] 82 and [name_m]Lewis[/name_m] 97.

I definitely do. I have an overall style that doesn’t seem to change much (retro/vintage and nature-based), but the names on my boys list tend to be much more popular than the names on my girls list. [name_f]My[/name_f] girls list, for example, contains [name_u]Juniper[/name_u], [name_f]Minerva[/name_f], [name_f]Freya[/name_f], and [name_f]Nova[/name_f]. [name_f]My[/name_f] boys list contains [name_m]Oliver[/name_m], [name_m]Arthur[/name_m], [name_m]Henry[/name_m], and [name_u]James[/name_u]. I have no explanation for it, I have accepted it for the phenomena it is.

Now that I’m on my laptop, I can properly respond here.

Based on the UK data:

Within the Top 100 (top 10 names are starred):

Amelia*, Olivia*, Isla*, Sophie*, Evie, Poppy, Sophia, Chloe, Ella, Freya, Charlotte, Daisy, Lola, Holly, Millie, Layla, Maisie, Sienna, Alice, Florence, Ellie, Imogen, Summer, Abigail, Jasmine, Rosie, Georgia, Esme, Elsie, Martha, Keira, Isobel, Violet

Harry*, Charlie*, Thomas*, Joshua, Henry, Dylan, Jake, Harrison, Adam, Ryan, Luke, Matthew, Liam, Callum, Michael, Nathan, Connor, Dexter, Louis

Within the top 500:

Darcie, Tillie, Gemma

Joel, Ashton, Rowan, Morgan, Andrew, Mackenzie, Addison, Walter, Ernie.

I’m backwards in comparison to everyone else going by that!

US wise though, I think my boys names rank higher.

I have always liked more unique choices for my girls names. [name_f]My[/name_f] daughters have names that are not even a blip on the SSA radar, and are essentially completely made-up. When it came to my boys names, things like [name_m]Beckett[/name_m] and [name_m]Landon[/name_m] and [name_u]Landry[/name_u] were contenders, which are much more popular and mainstream. I always told my husband that I could give my boy a more popular name than my girl. This made it easier for me to find boys names that I would consider, as opposed to girls names where I was much more picky.

Yes, unfortunately both [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f] and [name_f]Matilda[/name_f] are in the top 20 in Australia at the moment :frowning: I’ve loved them both for so long, but now that I want to start having kids, they are so popular. Typical.

I also know it’s the first time that [name_m]Austin[/name_m] has reached the inside top 100 in Australia, at least in a very long time, so I think that my number one choice of [name_u]Austen[/name_u] is very safe.

I’m all over the place with names. Haha. I’m using the ssa.gov 2012 list

I need to broaden my boys names

[name_f]My[/name_f] boys’ names tend to be a little more common–almost all within top 500, most within top 200, many within top 50. [name_f]My[/name_f] girls’ names are mostly in the 500-200 range as well, and several are higher, but quite a few are lower, and several are out of the top 1000, while none of my boys’ first-name contenders are.

I’m using the name nerds list. I’m sort of surprised that a few of my female names are out of the top 1000, while none of my boy names are. I tend to stick with names that are more “known”, so I actually figured most would be top 500.
