I’m interested especially in Polish, Czech, Slovak, Ukrainian, and Slovene names.
I don’t read Polish, Czech, etc. and recent lists are kind of hard to come by. Does anyone know a resource I could use? Maybe search terms I could use in Google that might be helpful?
Or, if you just happen to know what’s hot from personal experience or travel, that’s even better!
A very useful site for me has been babynamefacts.com. They list at least the top 10 for all the countries/nationalities you’ve listed, and the have the lists for either last year or the year before. Unfortunately, it’s not extensive as the SSA list for other countries, but it’s still been a pretty useful tool for me.
Wikipedia has a “List of Most Popular Given Names” page, so that’s pretty helpful. It’s usually just the top 5-10 but the bottom of the entry has the references, so that’s a huge bonus.
Names I hear a lot during time in Poland: [name]Julia[/name], [name]Natalia[/name], [name]Maya[/name], [name]Magdalena[/name], [name]Maria[/name], [name]Milena[/name], [name]Ilona[/name], [name]Kinga[/name], [name]Aleksandra[/name] (nn [name]Ola[/name]), [name]Martina[/name], [name]Anna[/name], [name]Teresa[/name]
Any style you’re after (just popular, classic ee names, names that translate easily, etc…)? I can keep listing
EDIT: Forgot a couple I love! Katarzyna (often with nn Kasia), Renata (I’ve always thought this name traveled nicely between languages), and Edyta.
[name]One[/name] of my favs is Madlenka. Theres a great children’s book by the same name, written by [name]Peter[/name] Sis, and he is of Czech background, I think…def eastern European at least. His DDs name is [name]Madeleine[/name], and I heard he wrote the book for her.
Hopefully these two resources that I have will be of some use.
First is a list from British [name]Baby[/name] Names — because there is a high number of Polish in the UK these days - many popular Polish names are ranked on the British Popularity List. More explanation at Polish Names - British Baby Names
@lineska, I actually read that Madlenka is not related to [name]Madeleine[/name], but to [name]Mary[/name] and [name]Maria[/name], so that makes perfect sense! But yes, I’m betting he uses it as a nn for his [name]Madeleine[/name], and I love it.
