Anyone other lovers of this name out there?

[name]Sumner[/name]!

I’ve been crushing on it for a while now, and I think I’m interested in some opinions. I have a feeling most Berries won’t like it (too close to the feminine [name]Summer[/name], and also probably too surnamey…), but I’ve decided to ask anyway.

I like its connection to [name]Charles[/name] [name]Sumner[/name] (a Massachusetts senator who fought very vocally for the abolition of slavery–who some might find a bit of a zealot, but I really appreciate what he stood for, and I want my children to stand up for what they believe in, which [name]Sumner[/name] obviously did), and it has a very cool southern sort of vibe to me that I love. Is Sumter any better? I don’t like it as much, but I figured it would be less [name]Summer[/name]-like. Then again, Sumter might be more strongly connected to the Battle of Ft. Sumter, which gets into the whole violence and honoring it sort of thing that can be very controversial. I’m not sure I’m ready to add it to my list, but it has the same sort of vibe that I really love in a name, so I’m giving it a chance. (I particularly love it with [name]Everett[/name] and [name]Jack[/name]!) [name]Even[/name] if you’re not fond of it personally, do you think it’s a bad name? Or is it just something you’re not fond of? I feel like I’m missing a really terrible association with it…

ATM, I’m really loving [name]Sumner[/name] [name]Eli[/name], but I’m not sure I’d stick with it. I don’t have the highest opinion of the Biblical [name]Eli[/name] (a glutton and a terrible parent, although it does seem like he didn’t do too badly by [name]Samuel[/name]…), but I do really like the pairing. What would you pair with [name]Sumner[/name]?

Thanks, ladies!

I grew up with a [name]Sumner[/name] (he’d be early twenties right now) and so for me the name is very tied to one individual. That being said I actually really like the surnamey aspect of it, and could definitely see it as a preppy little southern gentleman.

I definitely prefer [name]Sumner[/name] to Sumter, because while the [name]Sumner[/name] connection is fleeting and probably wouldn’t be widely recognized the Sumter connection would and is more controversial in my opinion.

I really love [name]Sumner[/name]! I’m bias though because I like surnamey names but I think it could definitely work. I might like it slightly more in the middle name spot though.

[name]Sumner[/name] used to be on my list, but fell off. I recently started liking it again and it is on my back up list. I like that it is unique, but has a classy feel.

I [name]LOVE[/name] [name]Sumner[/name]! I do think it could often be misread as the name [name]Summer[/name] for a boy, and I have seen it as a surname both in books, and on television shows. But I think it is so cute, oldish, and handsom. good luck

I knew some whose ln was [name]Sumner[/name], but I love it as a first or middle! It definitely has a southern gentleman vibe to it. When I hear it I picture plantations and hoop skirts

I’m not a big fan of Sumter, especially with the negative connotation thrown in. I think [name]Sumner[/name] [name]Eli[/name] sounds just okay, but I can’t come up with any other good combos

Also, other names that I think have the same southern vibe:
[name]Ansel[/name]
[name]Atherton[/name]
[name]Clive[/name]
[name]Deacon[/name]
[name]Grant[/name]
[name]Harlan[/name] (love!)
[name]Leyton[/name] (this one doesn’t look particularly southern, but when you hear someone with a drawl say it, it definitely sounds southern!)
[name]Walker[/name]

See, I’ve always loved this name even though it wasn’t even remotely similar to other on my list. I think it’s very cool, handsome name, the kind you see on a suave gentlemen I think.

Maybe you like [name]Sumner[/name] [name]Elijah[/name]? Or:

[name]Sumner[/name] [name]Thomas[/name]
[name]Sumner[/name] [name]Jude[/name]
[name]Sumner[/name] [name]Bartholomew[/name]
[name]Sumner[/name] [name]Benjamin[/name]
[name]Sumner[/name] [name]Xavier[/name]
[name]Sumner[/name] [name]Gray[/name]

If it ended up in the middle – [name]Atticus[/name] [name]Sumner[/name] and [name]Felix[/name] [name]Sumner[/name] are very cool to me.

It’s nice, too soft for a boy though to me.

I like [name]Sumner[/name], but it’s the name of a small town in [name]New[/name] Zealand (where I am from) so I probably couldn’t use it.

I like it! Oddly enough, I do like some surnames as first names ([name]Kirk[/name], Ames, [name]Monroe[/name] and now [name]Sumner[/name]). And I think it would fit a boy well.

Thanks, ladies! I’m surprised (and happy!) to see so much love (or more, so little hate? It seems like some are on the fence, but don’t think it’s a bad name…) for [name]Sumner[/name]. I’m still tossing it around, but I’m still really liking the idea of [name]Sumner[/name] [name]Eli[/name] [something]. Potentially [name]Sumner[/name] [name]Eli[/name] [name]Jack[/name], [name]Sumner[/name] [name]Eli[/name] [name]Flynn[/name], [name]Sumner[/name] [name]Eli[/name] [name]Charles[/name], or [name]Sumner[/name] [name]Eli[/name] [name]Gray[/name]. We’ll see how I feel about it in a few days, to see whether it has staying power or not.

@dantea - I feel like [name]Sumner[/name] [name]Elijah[/name] probably flows better, and I like [name]Elijah[/name] much more than [name]Eli[/name], but I don’t like it quite so much as a combo as much as I like just [name]Sumner[/name] [name]Eli[/name]…

I like [name]Sumner[/name] [name]Elijah[/name] or [name]Sumner[/name] [name]Levi[/name].

I like it. [name]Sumner[/name] is surprisingly usable as a first name. [name]Sumner[/name] [name]Eli[/name] is great. Are you sure you aren’t Southern? :stuck_out_tongue:

[name]Emily[/name]–lol, no, not Southern at all! We’re all from Europe, South [name]Dakota[/name], and the [name]New[/name] [name]Jersey[/name]/Maryland/Pennsylvania/[name]New[/name] [name]York[/name] area, lol. I don’t even think I have a relative in the South, period. But I’ve recently really gotten into country music and the TV show [name]Hart[/name] of [name]Dixie[/name], so I’m semi-in-love with the idea of an adorable mini southern gentleman with oodles of charm, an adorable accent, and a sunshiney personality.

I don’t dislike it at all, but also am not particularly fond of it. Not because of closeness to [name]Summer[/name], that doesn’t really bother me, and I like the story about the senator. I think I find it a little hard to read/hear is all. This is somehow making me think of Summoner, which I’m actually digging in a guilty pleasure sort of way now that I think about it.

Anyway, that’s just me. It has its plusses and I think a [name]Sumner[/name] would fit in pretty well with a lot of the names out there right now!

I think [name]Sumner[/name] is actually a contraction of Summoner–it’s a occupation name meaning “summoner”, so I’m guessing that’s where it came from. I’m still not sure how I feel about it, I do like it a lot, and I like [name]Sumner[/name] [name]Eli[/name]/[name]Sumner[/name] [name]Elijah[/name] (and [name]Sumner[/name] [name]Levi[/name]!), but I’ve been trying to narrow down my list, and I’m not sure I like it enough to replace any of the names on my list as it is right now. Plus, [name]Declan[/name] is also vying for a position, so there’s that, too…
