Aphra

It’s a new favourite. What do you think?

Well… I was thinking that it sounded like [name]Africa[/name], and this is what thinkbabynames says: possibly from the Latin name [name]Afra[/name], which was originally an ethnic name for a woman from [name]Africa[/name], which was later used as a nickname for a dark person.

Would it be considered offensive, then? I came here to offer my comments and ended up with questions. lol I’m not trying to open a can of worms with the mentioning of this, for the record. Hopefully no one will take offense to my inquiry.

I like how it was the name of the first woman to publish. A friend of a friend I knew back in highschool had the name [name]Afra[/name] and she is gorgeous and a lovely person, so the name is quite positive to me. I definitely see the concern, I don’t think that name has the same association anymore or at least not that I’ve ever heard of…but still… I’d like to hear other opinions on that.

I think of [name]Aphra[/name] Behn, the playwright, poet and spy. She was amazing, such an important woman in literature. I do like the name, it’s pretty and sweet.

[name]Aphra[/name] is a Hebrew name that means “dust”. I love it it for a number of reasons: it’s different, it’s a saint name, it’s exotically cool and it’s the name of the first woman who made a living as a writer in [name]England[/name] way back in the 1600’s. [name]Aphra[/name] is also a nature name (a genus of moths) as well as a Biblical place name (Aphrah with an extra h). I think it has great potential.

Thanks for clarifying that, cpc!

This is who I think of too.
