Appropriate girl name?

I’ve always had a bit of a soft spot for the name [name_m]Lucifer[/name_m], even before learning about its connections with the devil and such.

As you can probably guess by the title of this post, I was wondering if the name ‘[name_m]Lucifer[/name_m]’ could be appropriate for a girl? Nickname would be one of my other favourites; [name_f]Lucy[/name_f].

Its funny you say that because I always liked the name too, but people always mention the devil associations, etc and it made me feel like I couldn’t use the name.

I wouldn’t worry too much about it. If you like the name i would use it. Or perhaps something similar but more feminine?

[name_f]Lucille[/name_f]
[name_f]Lucilla[/name_f]
[name_f]Lucia[/name_f]
[name_f]Lucinda[/name_f]

All of these names would have the nickname [name_f]Lucy[/name_f] too

Or my favorite, [name_f]Lucienne[/name_f]

Honestly, I think the association is too strong. I would just use the name [name_f]Lucy[/name_f]. It’s actually Illegal to use the name in some countries because of the hardship it could place on children. I think this is one that should remain a guilty pleasure and shouldn’t actually be used.

I agree with the pp…why give her a name she’ll definitely be teased for? I definitely thought of the Devil connection right away too.
[name_f]Lucy[/name_f] is adorable though, I love:
[name_f]Lucille[/name_f]
[name_u]Luca[/name_u]
[name_f]Lucia[/name_f] (my personal favorite)
[name_f]Luciana[/name_f]
Or just [name_f]Lucy[/name_f]. I think it makes a sweet stand-alone name too.

[name_m]Lucifer[/name_m] will never be an appropriate name.

sorry, but I feel like it will make her life way harder than it needs to. she could easily be teased for it and i think this is one of those names that just wont make a good impression in the professional field. I would stick with [name_f]Lucy[/name_f].

For what its worth, [name_m]Lucifer[/name_m] isn’t an appropriate name for a boy either.

I agree with the others, for the most part, sorry. Though I come from an extremely religious/[name_m]Christian[/name_m] background, so I have a very knee-jerk negative reaction to the idea of “[name_m]Lucifer[/name_m]” on an actual child. I don’t think it was created to sound negative–after all, he had been the highest angel of heaven, and given a name meaning “morning star”–but because of what he is known for, and it is a pretty much one-person name (much like [name_m]Adolph[/name_m] these days), it has a lot of baggage that comes with it. I can imagine employers seeing [name_m]Lucifer[/name_m] as a joke if it came across their desk (although one would always hope everyone would get equal respect, regardless of his or her name, but there have been extensive studies done on name bias in the hiring process, and it does exist, even if we wish it weren’t so), and I’m not so sure it would be childhood teasing so much as outright ostracizing. I mean, obviously, I don’t know, because I don’t know a [name_m]Lucifer[/name_m], and I don’t know how it’d be received. But it is, after all, the name of the devil, and there are a lot of Christians out there, and I assume Jews as well, that probably wouldn’t receive it too well. I mean, again, I’d hope that we’d all be gracious about it, but I don’t think [name_m]Lucifer[/name_m] is one of those names that should be used in real life. Sorry.

Theoretically, with its similarities to names like [name_f]Lucy[/name_f], [name_f]Jennifer[/name_f], [name_u]Juniper[/name_u]/[name_m]Jupiter[/name_m], [name_u]Harper[/name_u], [name_u]Parker[/name_u], [name_m]Lucian[/name_m], etc., etc., you’d think it’d fit right in, and it has a nice, soft sound, but yeah. I don’t find it appropriate at all. Sorry.

[name_m]Lucifer[/name_m] isn’t appropriate name especially for a girl. I would just use [name_f]Lucy[/name_f].

Definitely not. And I never say “definitely not” unless a name would make a child’s life objectively miserable: either with a spelling that is non-standard AND doesn’t make sense phonetically (Syra, pronounced Sarah, e.g.), by being patently offensive to a lot of people (Adolf, for example), or I guess by having overwhelmingly negative connotations (the devil, because even if it’s not part of your set of beliefs, it’s a common association - in fact, the ONLY association I have other than the cat from Cinderella). I get that it SOUNDS like Lucy + Jennifer, two really nice names, but no.

No, I wouldn’t use it. For either gender. I’m sorry, but I just think it’s completely inappropriate, and should NEVER be used. However [name_f]Lucienne[/name_f] was mentioned, which has a similar sound and would still lend itself to the nickname [name_f]Lucy[/name_f]. Perhaps you would consider something like that? Or if you like boyish names for girls, I don’t see any reason why [name_m]Lucien[/name_m]/[name_m]Lucian[/name_m] wouldn’t work.

I’m usually pretty open-minded with it comes to names, but this one is too much. There’s no reason to make your daughter’s life that much more difficult.

I second [name_f]Lucy[/name_f], [name_f]Lucienne[/name_f], [name_f]Lucille[/name_f], [name_u]Juniper[/name_u] and [name_f]Jennifer[/name_f].

I want to be a bit clear when I say that this name thought is not from me, but from my cousin. They were 100% going to name their daughter [name_m]Lucifer[/name_m] if she was male, but since she’s not, they wanted to hear from others before they decided. With these results, I guess they’re going to have to go for something different, but with the nickname [name_f]Lucy[/name_f] still there.

It’s a guilty pleasure for a boy, but way to masculine for a girl

I find it masculine and not very usable in the first place. ^^ I agree with the above!

The first important job for a parent is to choose a name that will NOT cause negativity, embarrasment, shame, guilt or ridicule. I don’t think [name_m]Lucifer[/name_m] is appropriate for any gender due to the possibility that any one of these may occur in the future. I would suggest that you keep it as a quilty pleasure.

I don’t think so. [name_f]Lucienne[/name_f] is so magical sounding, I would definitely go for that option instead.

Totally agree. Others have posted some great alternatives to get the nickname [name_f]Lucy[/name_f]. [name_m]Lucifer[/name_m] is not appropriate in my opinion for a boy or a girl. ‘Like the devil?’ Would get really old really fast. Not fair at all on a child, there are so many great names out there that would give a child a better start in life than lucifer.
