In the past week, I’ve sort of fallen helplessly for this. Is it crazy?
I feel like the average person unfamiliar with Biblical (particularly [name_m]New[/name_m] Testament) history would automatically assume girl, but I love that it means “eagle” for a couple different reasons, and the Biblical [name_f]Aquila[/name_f] is a good namesake, imo. I think [name_m]Quill[/name_m] could be a cool nn, too, and love the sound of it. (It also seems like it’d fit well with some of my more out-there favorite Bible names, like [name_m]Boaz[/name_m], [name_m]Judah[/name_m], and [name_u]Asa[/name_u].)
I was tossing about something like [name_f]Aquila[/name_f] [name_m]Daniel[/name_m], maybe or [name_f]Aquila[/name_f] [name_m]John[/name_m], or even [name_m]Jack[/name_m] [name_f]Aquila[/name_f]? I am quite fond of [name_f]Aquila[/name_f] [name_m]Daniel[/name_m], but if not that, I’m not sure what I’d do with him at this point.
[name_m]How[/name_m] would you react to meeting a little [name_f]Aquila[/name_f]? (And in a similar-ish vein, [name_m]Apollos[/name_m]? There’s a great [name_m]Apollos[/name_m] in the [name_m]New[/name_m] Testament, too, but I fear he’d only get confused with [name_m]Apollo[/name_m]… I have discovered a penchant for unusual [name_m]New[/name_m] Testament names, but am wondering where to draw the line as to what’s usable and not.)
I’m a [name_m]Christian[/name_m], and I definitely associate the name with being unisex- perhaps more-so male, but the Nameberry label of female puts me off a little. They should make it orange ASAP!
I [name_u]LOVE[/name_u] biblical names. They’re the best- They’re beautiful regardless, but the touch of the bible is an extra drawcard for me. I personally think that if you live in a [name_m]Christian[/name_m] community, or come from a [name_m]Christian[/name_m] household, [name_f]Aquila[/name_f] will be a highly appreciated name. I appreciate it! If I met a little boy named [name_f]Aquila[/name_f], I’d be very pleased, and be keen to get to know his parents, as they evidently have named him in good taste. I think pairing it with a name such as [name_m]Daniel[/name_m] is perfect! A strong, masculine name, perfect for a little prince.
On the topic of Biblical names, I think [name_m]Apollos[/name_m] is completely useable and I wouldn’t confuse it with [name_m]Apollo[/name_m], but that might just be due to my Christianity, but in my personal and subjective opinion, these are beautiful names and you should use them with pride, if that is what you want to do.
[name_f]Praise[/name_f] the [name_m]New[/name_m] Testament, full of beautiful names and beautiful stories to read to little kiddies too!
@babettee - such high praise! Thank you. I do come from a [name_m]Christian[/name_m] family, and they are familiar with [name_f]Aquila[/name_f], but I wonder if they wouldn’t just find it really weird. If they don’t approve of [name_f]Eliza[/name_f], [name_f]Beatrix[/name_f], [name_u]Ari[/name_u], [name_f]Liliana[/name_f], [name_u]Bailey[/name_u], etc., I’m not sure they’ll be thrilled with [name_f]Aquila[/name_f]. Then again, they’ve made it clear that I am to make the decision, not them, so I suppose with time they’d come around. I’m glad you like the idea of [name_f]Aquila[/name_f] so much, though!
Ohhh, I love it! [name_f]Aquila[/name_f] has such a distinctive sound, great nickname potential, and it sounds like a meaningful choice for you too. [name_f]Aquila[/name_f] [name_m]Daniel[/name_m] is great, and I’d like [name_f]Aquila[/name_f] [name_m]Jack[/name_m] a lot too. [name_m]How[/name_m] about [name_f]Aquila[/name_f] [name_m]Samuel[/name_m]/[name_m]Samson[/name_m], [name_f]Aquila[/name_f] [name_m]Gabriel[/name_m], [name_f]Aquila[/name_f] [name_m]Dominic[/name_m], [name_f]Aquila[/name_f] [name_m]Vincent[/name_m] or [name_f]Aquila[/name_f] [name_u]Francis[/name_u]?
I do like [name_m]Apollos[/name_m], but it’s a very “big” name and yes, I do think people will confuse it for [name_m]Apollo[/name_m]. I much prefer the lovely [name_f]Aquila[/name_f]!
I have never heard this name before. I would probably assume [name_f]Aquila[/name_f] was a girl based only on the name, but wouldn’t blink an eye once I found out it was a boy. [name_m]Quill[/name_m] is an adorable nickname.
It brought to mind [name_m]Attila[/name_m] as in [name_m]Attila[/name_m] the Hun (can’t get much more masculine than that!) but [name_f]Aquila[/name_f] feels softer.
I’m guessing the pronunciation is “[name_m]Ah[/name_m]-quill-ah” not “[name_m]Ah[/name_m]-quee-lah”?
I’m a [name_m]Christian[/name_m] and a name lover so of course i have researched names in the Bible but I’ve never seen this one. At first I didn’t like it, but with the nn [name_m]Quill[/name_m] i think its doable. It fits in with [name_u]Artemis[/name_u], [name_m]Ezra[/name_m], and [name_u]Asa[/name_u].
I ca definitely see a little [name_f]Aquila[/name_f] running around and in today’s climate, it’s not too out there.
It’s lovely. “[name_m]Quill[/name_m]” is especially charming. I definitely think it can work. It may be unusual but it’s relatively short and simple, and it’s grounded with meaning and history. It doesn’t seem out of place with names like [name_m]Joaquin[/name_m], [name_u]Nikola[/name_u], [name_m]Elijah[/name_m], [name_m]Isaiah[/name_m], [name_m]Janika[/name_m], [name_m]Achilles[/name_m] and [name_u]Sequoia[/name_u].
Initially when I saw the thread I thought it looked Spanish because of its similarity to the word “aqui”. So I instinctively pronounced the name ‘ah-KEE-lah’ but I take it from the nickname that it’s more likely ‘ah-KWEE-lah’ or ‘[name_m]AH[/name_m]-kwi-lah.” The latter being my preferred.
It sounds quite gender neutral to me. There will be those who know its male namesake from the Bible, but for those who aren’t familiar (like myself) I don’t think they’ll assume strongly one way or the other. As for your family’s thoughts, if you choose it for you son’s name it will surely grow on them. [name_m]How[/name_m] could it not when it’s associated with your little boy!
Thank you, everyone! I’m rather blown away by the love for it, honestly! It is totally unexpected.
And now to decide if I love it enough to add it to my list! I like it a lot, but figured I should get general reactions before becoming all but committed to the name. (@katinka, I like [name_f]Aquila[/name_f] [name_m]Vincent[/name_m], and [name_f]Aquila[/name_f] [name_m]Jack[/name_m], but I think I like [name_f]Aquila[/name_f] [name_m]Daniel[/name_m] more? [name_m]Daniel[/name_m]'s a very special family name…)
For those who were wondering about pronunciation, I’ve always heard [name_f]Aquila[/name_f] as ah-[name_m]QUILL[/name_m]-ah, but I suppose the other pronunciations could be valid as well, especially in other languages.
