What do you think of ara for a baby girl? Honest opinions pls? How do you pronounce it?
It’s a little short for me but that’s a personal taste thing. Instinctive pronunciation is “Are-uh,” Midwest USA dialect.
It feels incomplete, I’d expect it to be a nickname for something else. I’d pronounce it arr-uh
Are-rah is how most i think would say it
Ah-ruh or A-ruh (Ah like are, A- like the sound it bat)
[name_u]Ara[/name_u] is sweet and earthy, something punchy and powerful about it! I do slightly prefer it for a boy, but I like it on a girl too
I only know it as a nickname, and it seems rather short, but I think it could be a stand alone name. I pronounce it like Are-ah.
I would pronounce it like “ar-uh” with the R being a mix of an R and an L, as I’m more familiar with it’s Korean origin versus the Armenian origin it says here on Nameberry! In Korean the name is written like 아라 and the letter ㄹ (or the R in Ara) is said like a mix between R and L!
Here’s a pronunciation online of how I’d say it - Papago (play the Korean side!)
Thank! Was interesting to read your response. What foes [name_u]Ara[/name_u] mean in Korean?
I like it! It could be stand alone or a nickname for a name ending in ara! I would pronounce (arr-ah)
I dont think its too dissimilar to names like [name_u]Ari[/name_u] & [name_u]Asa[/name_u]. So I think it could work. I would pronounce it Are-uh like a shortened for of [name_u]Aria[/name_u].
It reminded me first of all, of a Korean name like @readingreverie said.
I think that [name_u]Ara[/name_u] is complete on its own; feels quiet strong and majestic (while being short), and with a feeling of profecies and ancient tales. Yet modern.
there’s an eight-year-old girl at my after school care with this name! she’s very sweet and I think the name suits her. I’d never come across the name before and I like it! she pronounces it ARE-uh (like [name_f]Zara[/name_f] without the Z).
I went to high school with one and it’s totally wearable. It was pronounced “air-uh”, but I also wouldn’t be surprised to meet an “are-uh”. Honestly it seems like just a regular, normal name, albeit a little rare! If [name_f]Ava[/name_f] is a complete name, [name_u]Ara[/name_u] seems totally fine too. It’s kind of a fun and stylish name because you don’t really hear it often.
In Korean the meaning of names depends on what Hanja characters are used for the name (so each name has Chinese characters which correspond to the specific meaning of the name), so names can have multiple meanings! Online it seems the more common meanings are “beautiful” or “sea,” but I’m unsure if that’s actually true! A possible Hanja of the name is 娥羅 (娥 meaning elegant, graceful, refined, and 羅 meaning net for catching birds), and I’d say that’s one people might know most as the actress Go Ara’s name uses this Hanja.
I want to like it, but it looks a little incomplete to me (like a misspelling of Aria).
i love ara !! she’s obviously compact and simple, but seems very complete and strong to me. ara feels very elegant yet powerful to me, like a goddess.
[name_u]Aria[/name_u] plus [name_f]Aura[/name_f] equals [name_u]Ara[/name_u]!
I’d pronounce it ARR-uh, like beginning of [name_u]Aria[/name_u] and end of [name_f]Aura[/name_f]. I think it’s all right.
It can also come from the Korean verb ara (아라) meaning ”to know”
I’m honestly not sure how I feel about it. I love -ara as a suffix in longer names, but on its own it feels insubstantial and nondescript to me. I love simplicity but in this case I feel the sounds aren’t quite strong enough standing alone, it’s like something lost on the wind. [name_u]Love[/name_u] the palindrome symmetry. It could grow on me [name_f]My[/name_f] brain instantly paired it with fellow 3 letter palindrome [name_f]Eve[/name_f].
Oh & I’d pronounce Ah-ra, to rhyme with [name_f]Cara[/name_f], [name_f]Tara[/name_f], [name_f]Zara[/name_f], [name_f]Clara[/name_f] etc, in [name_f]British[/name_f] [name_f]English[/name_f].
