[name]Will[/name] you get a really improper image?
Or maybe I should think of something like [name]Rowan[/name]?
Those are all extremely masculine - I dislike them immensely. I think the overly masculine names on girl trend is awkward and will soon be very dated.
[name]Rowan[/name] feels more acceptable because it is also a nature name, so it’s unisex.
I wanted to come back and suggest [name]Evangeline[/name], Evantia, [name]Evadne[/name] as full names for [name]Evan[/name]?
Maybe [name]Elodie[/name] for [name]Eliot[/name]?
I am girl with a very masculine name and I have learned to love my name but I got lots of weird looks and it caused a lot of confusion when I was growing up. It can be hard on the child and I know several people in my situation that did not end up loving their names and some even changed their names or started going by a middle name. I actually like the idea of [name]Elliot[/name] on a girl, I think it could become more unisex especially since there is a family on TV with a daughter named [name]Elliot[/name]. I think there is a female doctor on TV too named [name]Elliot[/name]. [name]Evan[/name] and [name]Elias[/name] I really don’t see working that well, I have never met, never even heard of really, a girl with either of these names. I think [name]Evangeline[/name] is a wonderful suggestion to replace [name]Evan[/name]
[name]Elliot[/name] – Although this does have quite the soft/gentle feel to it, I just doesn’t feel like it would work too well on a girl at all. [name]Elettra[/name]?
[name]Elias[/name] – This is completely masculine in my opinion, and definitely not for a girl. What about Elowen?
[name]Evan[/name] – While it works for [name]Evan[/name] [name]Rachel[/name] Woods, I find the sound and look of [name]Evan[/name] rather heavy, and would very much prefer the lighter and much more feminine [name]Eva[/name], perhaps with the nickname of [name]Evita[/name]. Oh, what about Evanthia, or Evania?
[name]Rowan[/name] – I have known too many male [name]Rowan[/name]'s to ever picture it on a girl. Rhoswen?
If it’s unisex-type names you are after, my personal favourites, are [name]Addison[/name], [name]Quinn[/name], [name]Andie[/name], [name]True[/name], [name]River[/name], and [name]Eden[/name].
I have to admit I like unisex names.
I still prefer [name]Elliot[/name].[name]Evangeline[/name] is nice,too.
Thanks all of you;),especially parkerbelle. I’ll think of it carefully.
They’re boys names. No offense!
They’re boys names, and as such, I view them as very masculine and unattractive on a girls. [name]Elliot[/name] is familiar man’s name on shows like [name]Law[/name] and Order: SVU and Leverage, so most people would see it as a male name. There are so many lovely [name]ELL[/name] and EV names for girls out there. [name]Rowan[/name] is a little more doable.
I think out of those [name]Elliot[/name] is the most usable for a girl. However I’m not a massive fan.
[name]Rowan[/name] is a better choice and I love it for both boys and girls.
[name]Addison[/name] is NOT a unisex name, it means son of [name]Adam[/name].
I’ll suggest Elowen, [name]Arden[/name], Evren & [name]Esme[/name].
I would never ever use these names for a girl.
I am a unisex fan (obviously) but I do not think any of these names qualify.
Ditto. I wish people would leave them for the boys!
Honestly, it’s going to get to the stage where the only names boys can have will be the over-the-top masculine names like [name]Ridge[/name] and Jackman that people are starting to suggest.
I like all of them for a girl, especially [name]Evan[/name] & [name]Elliot[/name]–I like unisex names in general. Why should a name have to be used only for a boy or girl? The only unisex names I don’t like so much are one’s that actually mean something like “son of”, i.e. [name]Madison[/name], [name]Addison[/name], etc.
[name]Rowan[/name] is far better.
[name]Elliot[/name] is a boys name that’s been taken over to the girls way too much with spellings like Elliette. What’s next? Elleighette?
[name]Elias[/name] is all boys, don’t touch it! [name]Evan[/name] is more feminine but still very much boy to me.
Sigh… whether one “approves” (I put this in quotes, because no one here is the authority on names) or not, [name]Addison[/name] is considered a unisex name now. It’s in the top 20 for girls for goodness sake, so even though its origins are as a male name, it’s definitely unisex now (in fact, used much more frequently for females).
That being said, [name]Elliott[/name], [name]Evan[/name], and [name]Elias[/name] are pretty masculine in my opinion (especially [name]Elias[/name]). I have heard [name]Evan[/name] and [name]Elliott[/name] for little girls but it’s NMS. [name]IMO[/name] [name]Rowan[/name] would be better. Are you looking for more unisex name ideas?
I agree, 100%. I have heard of [name]Elliot[/name] and [name]Evan[/name] on girls–I wouldn’t suggest it, and they’re still 100% masculine to me, but I have heard them being used–but [name]Elias[/name] on a girl? My mind can’t even conceive it. [name]Rowan[/name] is fairly established as being used on both genders, so it’s a lot more usable, imo.
Not a fan of any of those names (including [name]Rowan[/name]) on a girl. I like the suggestion of [name]Evangeline[/name] with the nickname [name]Evan[/name].
[name]Elisabeth[/name] [name]Rae[/name], thanks for weighing in. I think the other part of my hatred for [name]Addison[/name] as a name is the [name]Grey[/name]'s fangirling…and the fact that it is a really vicious endocrine disorder.
I think there are two sets of answers to your question. Among name nerds (which are what you are going to get here) the majority of people are going to say no. Among the general population, I think you’d see general acceptance of [name]Elliot[/name], some acceptance of [name]Evan[/name] and really weird looks for [name]Elias[/name].
Looking at the names objectively, [name]Elliot[/name] is derived from a surname, which in turn is derived from [name]Elias[/name]. I tend to think that surname names are sort of fair game for either sex. The meaning is gender neutral and it was in the top 1000 for girls last year, so while it’s not my personal style, I really don’t see it causing too much trouble. It is still far, far more popular for boys and is an interesting case study for anyone who thinks that as soon as a name “goes to the girls” it will immediately plummet for boys.
[name]Evan[/name] is a form of [name]John[/name], and while I’ve heard it on a few girls, I think it remains almost completely masculine. It’s a top 50 boys name and while I don’t have a big issue with unisex names, I kind of feel that names in the top 100 or so should generally be left alone. I think it would be awkward to share a name with multiple classmates if all the rest of them were the opposite sex. I get the appeal of the sound of [name]Evan[/name] for girls but I’d agree with previous posters who suggested using it as a nickname.
[name]Elias[/name] is the least usable of the 3. It’s nearing the top 100 for boys, and has strongly religious roots. Although I’m not religious myself, I generally feel that we should be respectful of other people’s religious traditions, and co-opting these sorts of names just doesn’t feel right to me.
I personally love [name]Rowan[/name] for a girl. [name]Even[/name] though it’s actually more popular for boys in my area, the only Rowans I know of are all female. I also think that, all else being equal, nature names are totally fair game for either sex.
