Are Emeline and Emily too close?

I love the name [name_f]Emeline[/name_f]. I am just afraid that it is too close to my name, [name_f]Emily[/name_f]. [name_f]Do[/name_f] you think I’d be able to use it in real life, or is it too close to [name_f]Emily[/name_f]?

[name_m]How[/name_m] do YOU pronounce [name_f]Emeline[/name_f]? If you pronounce it [name_f]Emma[/name_f]-[name_f]LINE[/name_f], then it is totally usable. The [name_f]Emma[/name_f]-[name_u]LYNN[/name_u] pronunciation is super close, too close for me but I don’t think that would make it TOTALLY off limits. What if you spelled it [name_f]Emmeline[/name_f], just to seperate it more?

You could use [name_f]Emeline[/name_f] as a middle name. If I met a woman named [name_f]Emily[/name_f] with a daughter named [name_f]Emeline[/name_f] I would assume that [name_f]Emeline[/name_f] was named after her mother. I don’t think there’s anything wrong with that, but if you don’t want it to stand out tuck [name_f]Emeline[/name_f] away in the middle.

It’s very similar, but I don’t know that it’s too close for mother and daughter. I actually have cousins who are siblings named [name_f]Emily[/name_f] and [name_f]Emmalyn[/name_f] - I personally think that’s ridiculous, almost like giving two of your children the same name. It’s different if it’s parent and child, though. Your daughter could be named after you. If you’re comfortable with it, I doubt it’d be a problem. I mean, once you have kids, your name changes to “Mom” anyway. :stuck_out_tongue:

It’s very similar, and I agree with the suggestion to consider the [name_f]Emmeline[/name_f] spelling to help cut some of the similarity. If you are pronouncing [name_f]Emmeline[/name_f] as ‘[name_f]Emma[/name_f]-lyn’ or ‘Emma-leen’, I think it’s too similar. I think ‘[name_f]Emma[/name_f]-line’ is okay though.

I personally think it is way too close.

DH and I had lots of name discussions the past few days, and I think we came up with a combo we like…[name_f]Eva[/name_f] [name_f]Lily[/name_f] [name_f]Catherine[/name_f]! I like the meaning of [name_f]Eva[/name_f], [name_f]Lily[/name_f] is such a beautiful and delicate name, and [name_f]Catherine[/name_f] was my maternal grandmother’s name. We feel like this just might be the perfect fit. Thoughts? Thank you in advance : )

It will work

They’re definitely very similar, but I think it’s quite a cute pairing for mother and daughter.

I love [name_f]Emmeline[/name_f]/[name_f]Emeline[/name_f]! I agree with @southern.maple - if you don’t want people thinking you named your daughter after you (especially if you use the emma-leen pron.), then I wouldn’t use it up front. I don’t think there’s anything wrong with using it–just expect that some people might think you named your daughter after yourself. [name_f]Emmeline[/name_f]'s a lovely name, though; I adore it.

It’s fine, but as others have said, I’d assume it was after you (which I think is sweet).

A little perspective: my mom is named Kathleen and my sister is Katherine, because it was my dad’s grandma’s name and he INSISTED and my mom didn’t have a backbone then. Besides the inevitable confusions with a parent and child with similar names – people using the wrong nickname for the wrong person, mail mix-ups, etc – my mom is very uncomfortable when people think she named her daughter after herself when she didn’t. If you’ll feel weird about people assuming you chose Emeline for its similarity to your own name, use it in the middle.

I’d assume it was after you, but then I don’t see any problem with it. I think it’s okay if you want to use [name_f]Emeline[/name_f] (I prefer [name_f]Emmeline[/name_f] spelling though), but to avoid the confusion, maybe you would want to choose other nickname (not [name_f]Em[/name_f] like you).

[name_f]IMO[/name_f] it is too similar

I would assume she was named after you, which is fine.

I think as sister names it’s too close, but as mother-daughter it’s cute.
i don’t think you HAVE to change the spelling to differentiate it either.

Agreed if your pronouncing it [name_f]Emma[/name_f]-[name_f]Line[/name_f] then it’s ok.

I much prefer the spellings [name_f]Emmaline[/name_f] or [name_f]Emaline[/name_f] (like the [name_m]Ben[/name_m] Folds song). As a future teacher I would probably automatically pronounce [name_f]Emeline[/name_f] as [name_f]Emma[/name_f]-[name_u]LYNN[/name_u] the first time I was reading roll.

For a mother and daughter I don’t find it too close. Like others have mentioned though, I would use the -[name_f]LINE[/name_f] pronunciation.
