[name]Hi[/name] all, curious on people’s opinions here. I have a baby girl due in [name]April[/name], and she’ll be joining her 4 year old brother [name]Alexander[/name]. I’ve had my heart set on naming DD [name]Alice[/name], a name I’ve had at the ready since pregnant with [name]Alexander[/name]. It’s only just dawned on us how similar the names are if [name]Alexander[/name] is nn [name]Alex[/name], which I know is certain to be the case as he gets older, what with school peers. Family and friends address [name]Alexander[/name] as simply that. We’re not fussed on variations of [name]Alice[/name], and don’t have any other favourites.
Honestly, do you think this will cause havoc?Thank you.
[name]Alex[/name] and [name]Alice[/name] are too close in my honest opinion, just imagine yelling for one, and you’ll probably get both.
An [name]Alice[/name] in school however, will probably gain the name [name]Ali[/name] eventually from friends, if you also decided to pick it up at home [name]Alex[/name] and [name]Ali[/name] are different enough to be heard correctly.
I’m on the fence on this one. [name]Alice[/name] and [name]Alexander[/name] are both great names and would be a cute sibset and are different enough when used fully, but not sure about [name]Alice[/name]/[name]Alex[/name].
I do think [name]Alex[/name] and [name]Alice[/name] are extremely similar. Have you thought of occasionally calling your son [name]Xander[/name] or something? I think [name]Xander[/name] and [name]Alice[/name] are fine and that way if people do try and call him by a nickname, I would think they would opt for [name]Xander[/name] which he’s gone by occasionally, rather than [name]Alex[/name]?
But yes, sorry, I do think [name]Alice[/name] and [name]Alex[/name] are too close.
IMHO I don’t think it matters if the names are similar. YES, they are very close in sound but what’s the matter with that? So one might mishear you call for [name]Alex[/name] when you call for [name]Alice[/name] or vice-versa. Is that such a terrible fate? I honestly don’t get the whole obsession with worrying about names that are “too matchy.” You’d get just as many odd looks from friends and family if you named your kids [name]Xerxes[/name], [name]Yuki[/name], and [name]George[/name] but what is the harm it’s going to cause? Sorry to be so blunt about it but I don’t see having kids named [name]Alexander[/name] and [name]Alice[/name] as a big deal AT ALL. If [name]Alice[/name] is the name you love and you just can’t find any other then name her [name]Alice[/name]. You’re next kid could be named [name]Alexa[/name] or or [name]Al[/name] and it’s still not going to do any harm.
Could you pre-empt the natural inclination of school children to shorten each others names by choosing a different nickname for him now and getting people used to it? Maybe [name]Zander[/name]/[name]Xander[/name] or [name]Lex[/name]? If people have a short form other than [name]Alex[/name] that they’re used to calling him by their less likely to want to call him by [name]Alex[/name]. I think it may be unrealistic to convince his school friends to always call him by [name]Alexander[/name]. My sister is [name]Caitlyn[/name] and we’ve never shortened her name, but school friends still call her [name]Kate[/name].
The other worry with [name]Alex[/name] and [name]Alice[/name] is that both can be shortened to [name]Al[/name]. So yes I’d have to say they’re too close as beautiful as [name]Alice[/name] is.
I’d probably avoid an [name]Al[/name] related nn for both, I’d do [name]Xander[/name] and [name]Lissa[/name] to really differentiate.
They are way too close for siblings! [name]Even[/name] with the full name [name]Alexander[/name], his name will inevitably be shortened to [name]Alex[/name] by friends/school.
You could always start calling [name]Alexander[/name] something other than [name]Alex[/name] - [name]Xander[/name] or [name]Lex[/name], maybe? That way you probably won’t run into many problems. Otherwise I don’t think it’s too much of an issue. I mean, so what if [name]Alice[/name] occasionally looks up if her brother’s friends call ‘[name]Alex[/name]’? It isn’t the end of the world, since [name]Alex[/name] would just be a nickname anyway.
And just as a side note in reply to an above message, I know lots of girls named [name]Alice[/name], and not a single one of them gets ‘[name]Ali[/name]’.
I don’t see the problem. Okay, maybe they are a bit similar, but that’s it. If you love the name, use it! I honestly think [name]Alexander[/name] and [name]Alice[/name] makes a cute sibset.
