Are my names really that bad/crazy?

My husband and I are expecting out first child (we dont know the sex). I am only 4 weeks away from my due date and we have some names picked out… but no one else seems to like them!

What do you think?

(ive been checking out the forums and it seems people here are a little more open minded about names!)

Sidonius
Fillan
[name]Januarius[/name]
[name]Bosco[/name]
[name]Pastor[/name]

They are all saints names which we really want… but we dont want the regular… [name]John[/name] or [name]Mary[/name] etc.!!!

Are they really that bad???

To be honest, I don’t really like them either… they just aren’t my taste.

Bad is a relative term. They are at least a bit beyond uncommon, which makes people uncomfortable. Any chance you would call the boy by a nickname? Sidonius = [name]Sid[/name]?

Are you aware of [name]Saint[/name] Remigius, he has a really cool story? Saint Remigius - Wikipedia

[name]Remy[/name] is a popular French Boys name.

I responded to your post in the girls forum too… ( as i also like saints names!)

They boys are a little but better than the girls (sorry)… I like the [name]SID[/name] or Sidonius but not a fan of the whole name…

I dont mind [name]Bosco[/name] or [name]Pastor[/name]… [name]Januarius[/name] is odd but ok… Fillan sounds like “fill -in” so not my fave…

What about saints names like [name]Blaine[/name] or [name]Atticus[/name]?? Not common but not quite as hard to pronounce as your ideas!

Also there are some Pope names that would be more mainstream like:
[name]Benedict[/name]
[name]Urban[/name]

[name]Bosco[/name] is kind of cool. That’s my favorite from your list. I could see a little [name]Bosco[/name] on the playground, but it has enough substance to be a grown man. I like the sound of [name]Pastor[/name], (pronounced with the emphasis on the second syllable, I’m imagining?) but he would probably have a lot of awkward/confusing situations as an adult where people thought he was a minister/pastor as a profession, since a lot of them are called [name]Pastor[/name] so and so and you couldn’t tell the difference in writing. I’m not really a big fan of your other names, but I also think if you love them then you shouldn’t worry too much about it. If a saint has a special meaning to you that counts for something as well. Honestly, though, I think [name]Januarius[/name] is a little silly sounding, especially for a baby not born in [name]January[/name]. I wouldn’t vote for that one. I’ll have to check out your girls list too

I love saint names and their are so many good options out there. What about something like [name]Clement[/name], [name]Ignatius[/name], [name]Aloysius[/name], or [name]Ambrose[/name] they are all very uncommon but not really to the point of being unlikable.

Sidonius and Fillan - These two are a lot of name. I would not label them as bad but they are going to be really hard to wear. Where as the names that I mentioned and @bigdaddy mentioned are so much easier to wear while still being different
[name]Januarius[/name] - I can see it working, I wonder if it would get confused for [name]January[/name] when it is said
[name]Bosco[/name] - [name]Love[/name] the [name]John[/name] [name]Bosco[/name] connection and it is light and wearable, so this one gets my vote
[name]Pastor[/name] - What about [name]Shepherd[/name] instead? [name]Pastor[/name] works but I think it would be a little confusing and a lot of pressure on him to become a priest one day. I love the name [name]Priestly[/name] but this pressure is what keeps me from using it.

Would you like some links with some more saints names? What about saints that are special to you?

I like [name]Bosco[/name] and Sidonius. Are these particular saints very important to you or could you go with something a bit more closer to uncommon and not out there?

If you’d be open to other saint names, i would be happy to come back and suggest some, but I don’t want to have a long list of saints names on here if you don’t want them

I think all of these are useable except for [name]Pastor[/name]! A much better list than your girl’s list. I think I like:

  1. Fillian
  2. Sidonius
  3. [name]Bosco[/name]

I think [name]Bosco[/name] is definitely wearable - although I’ve only ever heard of it on South-[name]East[/name] Europeans. It has a kind of cool and edgy sound about it and I guess there is the nickname Boz if you did want a nickname.

The other seem a little too much, and hard to wear for an adult let alone a child.

[name]Pastor[/name] just seems strange, as does [name]Januarius[/name] - I don’t like day/month names and this would be confused with [name]January[/name].

Sidonious is OK and would get my second vote, particularly with the nn [name]Sid[/name].

Fillan not only sounds like Fill-in but I also hear the word Villain when I say it, which isn’t the best association.

Here are a few suggestions for you if you’re open to some! :]
St. [name]Alphonsus[/name] - patron saint of theologians. I’d go with [name]Alphonse[/name] though.
St. [name]Ephraem[/name] ([name]Ephrem[/name], [name]Ephraim[/name]) - very important saint.
St. [name]Vincent[/name] - patron saint of charitable societies.
St. [name]Raphael[/name] - arch angel, patron saint of love & lovers.

I think wearability is very important. Then again, if you do name your son [name]Januarius[/name], or something, he can just change it later on if he really dislikes it so much.

[name]Pastor[/name] isn’t usable. I like [name]Bosco[/name] from your list.

I love Sidonious!! I mentioned it to my [name]MIL[/name] as well and she thought it was cool too (: Fillan sounds like “Fill in” So I don’t like it that much. I don’t care for the others either (: Sidonious is great though!!!

I responded to your list of girl’s names and now time to do the boys
Sidonius- The nickname [name]Sid[/name] is nice, but I don’t like the name overall.
Fillan- Its ok, but NMS.
[name]Januarius[/name]- A bit odd, I honestly think the only month-containing name that works for boys is [name]August[/name].
[name]Bosco[/name]- [name]Don[/name]'t like it.
[name]Pastor[/name]- It could work, but I think the direct church reference is a bit much.

Here’s a few more saint names:
[name]Adrian[/name]
[name]Ambrose[/name]
[name]Angelo[/name] (ann-gel-oh)
[name]Augustus[/name]
[name]Bartholomew[/name]
[name]Basil[/name]
[name]Colman[/name]
[name]Conrad[/name]
[name]Constantine[/name]
[name]Elias[/name]
[name]Felix[/name]
[name]Gerald[/name]
[name]Gerard[/name]
[name]Gregory[/name]
[name]Hugh[/name]
[name]Magnus[/name]
[name]Raphael[/name]

Wasnt there a Seinfeld episode where [name]Bosco[/name] was the password of someones ATM? Or it’s a chocolate drink of some kind? I dont really remember but I dont think it’s that usable.

They are pretty bad…Boscoe sounds like a dog’s name

I’m not Catholic so [name]Bosco[/name] is a chocolate syrup to me, sound like the name of a chocolate lab

My late cousin was named Sidon, went by [name]Don[/name] so I like Sidonius

Sidonius-- I’m not sure what to say about this name. It feels big to me, for anyone…

Fillan-- Reminds me of “fill in”. It also sounds a little made up.

[name]Januarius[/name]-- This name is actually on my own personal name list. I [name]LOVE[/name] [name]January[/name] for a girl, and I like the religious connection (St. [name]Januarius[/name].) For me, [name]Januarius[/name] is just a little too old school Catholic/Latin, but I still like the idea of it.

[name]Bosco[/name]-- This one isn’t so out there, either. I’ve run across a few [name]Roscoe[/name]'s, so to me this is basically just a different spin.

[name]Pastor[/name]-- I think this name is ok in theory, but it’s just a little too out there. It falls along the lines of [name]Deacon[/name] and [name]Cohen[/name] for me.

I guess bottom line, they’re not completely wacky. There are so many saint names out there that are unusual and beautiful, and even the ones you’ve listed are seeping with history and meaning, so that influences a lot. If you love the name and it’s meaningful to you, use it.

There are indeed a lot of distinctive saints’ names, many of them unfamiliar and usable for the adventurous baby namer. We do have a list of saints’ names that straddle the line between being unusual and usable here – 128 Cool Unique Saint Names for Babies | Nameberry

And there’s a much longer list in Beyond [name]Ava[/name] & [name]Aiden[/name] and Cool Names.

To tell you the truth, I’m not entirely sure that you’re not pulling our leg here. [name]Bosco[/name] and [name]Pastor[/name] have modern meanings that swamp any association to a saint so not sure why you’d pick those out. [name]Januarius[/name] is much more reminiscent of the month than any religious figure and Fillan does feel made up. The only one to me that really relates to an ancient saints’ name and has real modern application is actually Sidonius.

Not bad, but a little hard to wear.

Here’s some saint names that I think are less obscure:
[name]Colman[/name]
[name]Conan[/name]
[name]Blane[/name]
[name]Brice[/name]
[name]Clement[/name]
[name]Cyrus[/name]
[name]Magnus[/name]
[name]Matthias[/name]
[name]Elian[/name]
[name]Darius[/name]
[name]Emmanuel[/name]
[name]Fabian[/name]
[name]Felix[/name]
[name]Lucian[/name]
[name]Lucius[/name]
[name]Quentin[/name]
