Are our fav names too weird?

[name_m]Hi[/name_m] there! DH and I are 3 weeks away from the birth of our first baby boy! We’re super excited and we finally settled on a list of favs. However, I’m a little worried that a lot of our top choices might be too weird.

Our list of names is

[name_u]Ridley[/name_u] (top choice for both of us!)
[name_u]Kit[/name_u]
[name_u]Merritt[/name_u] (we like this one a lot but it seems a bit too feminine…)
[name_m]Will[/name_m] (not short for [name_m]William[/name_m] but just on its own)
[name_u]Ori[/name_u]

We want something unique, but it’s hard not to be a worry wart about something this big. We could definitely use a few opinions before making the big decision! Thanks!

Hey! Congrats on your bundle! I think these names are fine - not too out there at all! (but I like unusual names, so i may be a little biased lol) I really like [name_u]Merritt[/name_u] from your list, probably my favourite of your options  [name_u]Ori[/name_u] is adorable, but too short for my liking - maybe a nn for a longer name??
Also, I don’t know that I would used [name_m]Will[/name_m] by itself - I feel like it’s asking for confusion as everyone will assume it is short for something (just saves your little boy from many annoying conversations).

I think those names are usable. The only one I’m not sure about is [name_u]Ori[/name_u] because it feels like a nickname, e.g short for [name_u]Orion[/name_u] or something else. My favorite out of them is [name_u]Kit[/name_u], personally. I like that name a lot and used to have it on my list, but it doesn’t work great with my last name so it’s probably out of the question.

I like all your listed names, non are too weird or out there to me. Although I love [name_u]Ori[/name_u] I think [name_u]Ridley[/name_u] sounds right for what you are going for. So much potential for nicknames too if you wanted to use any.

I love [name_u]Merritt[/name_u]. There’s also Merit. I also like [name_u]Ori[/name_u].

[name_u]Love[/name_u] these names! [name_u]Ridley[/name_u] is just adorable! I also really like [name_u]Kit[/name_u]. I don’t think [name_u]Merritt[/name_u] is too feminine. I do agree with other comments that [name_u]Ori[/name_u] sounds like a nickname, but a cute one! [name_f]Happy[/name_f] naming!

[name_u]Merritt[/name_u] was on my list but I know a woman named [name_u]Merritt[/name_u] so I replaced it with [name_m]Merrick[/name_m] which seems more masculine. Unfortunately DH is not a fan which stinks because it is one of my favorites. I also tried slipping [name_m]Marek[/name_m] in there (very similiar pronounciation but more masculine spelling since it is a form of [name_m]Mark[/name_m]) but he wasn’t having that either.

I don’t think your choices are too out there

What great choices!

[name_u]Merritt[/name_u] is definitely my favorite of your names. I like [name_u]Kit[/name_u] and [name_u]Ori[/name_u] only as nicknames. Maybe pp’s suggestion of [name_u]Orion[/name_u] or [name_u]Ari[/name_u] (somehow this sounds more substantial to my ears) would work? Not a fan of [name_m]Will[/name_m] and I live near a place called [name_u]Ridley[/name_u], so it seems weird as a name to me. And I’m just not a fan of the name overall.

I [name_u]LOVE[/name_u] [name_u]Kit[/name_u], [name_u]Merritt[/name_u], and [name_m]Will[/name_m], particularly the first two! Definitely not too weird, and personally I don’t find [name_u]Merritt[/name_u] too feminine either, though I can see why you’re asking. [name_u]Kit[/name_u]'s a winner for me - practically never used (I think), familiar, and just great for a boy! You could put [name_m]Christopher[/name_m] on the birth certificate and call him [name_u]Kit[/name_u] if that’s your sort of thing . . . btw [name_m]Kester[/name_m]'s another cool nickname for [name_m]Christopher[/name_m] that might be up your street.

I do not think they are too weird, or even weird for that matter. I do not find [name_u]Merritt[/name_u] feminine. I actually think [name_u]Merritt[/name_u] is all boy. [name_f]Marit[/name_f] is a girls name, a Swedish and Norwegian form of [name_f]Margaret[/name_f].

Very cool choices! I don’t think they are at all weird!

Here are my favorites, from most to least.

[name_u]Merritt[/name_u] - I like this a lot! It is totally unisex to me, so I don’t think it is too feminine. It sounds like “[name_u]Barrett[/name_u]” which is all boy to me. I like that it could go along with the surname trend but also has a nice meaning in the form of merit.
[name_u]Ridley[/name_u] - I think this will be somewhat familiar to some people because of the director [name_u]Ridley[/name_u] [name_m]Scott[/name_m]. It’s a cool sounding surname and I think it would be unique enough to stand out but fit in fine with all of the other surname-names boys have now.
[name_u]Kit[/name_u] - This one is cool and sporty and catchy, but it leans more girl to me.
[name_m]Will[/name_m] - I know a ton of [name_m]Will[/name_m]'s so this seems less dazzling compared to your other names.
[name_u]Ori[/name_u] - This looks incomplete to me. Maybe short for [name_u]Orion[/name_u]?

I don’t think so at all! I adore [name_u]Kit[/name_u] and [name_m]Will[/name_m]. [name_u]Merritt[/name_u] is cool, like a new and improved [name_m]Garrett[/name_m]. [name_u]Ridley[/name_u] is unique, but not unusable. The only one I don’t like is [name_u]Ori[/name_u] (name of an odd and funny-looking dwarf in The Hobbit – not a bad guy, just an incurable association for me).

My favourites, in order…

  1. [name_u]Ridley[/name_u]
  2. [name_u]Merritt[/name_u]
  3. [name_m]Will[/name_m]

They are all nice names but if YOUR favourite is [name_u]Ridley[/name_u] I hope it is the one you choose! None of the names are too out there. The only [name_u]Kit[/name_u] I happen to know is a female that uses it as a nickname for [name_f]Katherine[/name_f] but I do know it also works for a male.

If you want something similar to [name_u]Merritt[/name_u], I would suggest [name_m]Merrick[/name_m], which I think is more Masculine
