Are these names terrible?

I’m from a town named [name_m]Ryder[/name_m] and right before we moved 1000 miles away, my husband and I decided to try for another baby. We’ll probably never go back there so my husband and I thought maybe it would be nice to name the baby after our hometown of [name_m]Ryder[/name_m]. But I’ve been on other sites before this and everyone seems to think this is a horrible name. They said he’ll get made fun of and that it sounds like “ride her.”

The other name is [name_m]Holden[/name_m]. People seem to hate this one too. [name_m]Said[/name_m] it sounds like “holding” or that [name_m]Holden[/name_m] Caufield was not a good person… Etc, etc.

What do you think of these? And if you like them do you think either [name_m]Ryder[/name_m] [name_m]Jacob[/name_m], or [name_m]Holden[/name_m] [name_m]Jacob[/name_m] sound OK? Thanks!

Dang, what a bunch of haters! Both names are good in my book. [name_m]Ryder[/name_m] has personal significance and a combination of old-fashioned Western/cowboy credo and modern cool-kid attitude. [name_m]Holden[/name_m] is a great name, one I would have considered for a son if my partner had not already named his dog that. I think it shares its best qualities with [name_m]Ryder[/name_m]. I prefer the sound of [name_m]Holden[/name_m] [name_m]Jacob[/name_m], myself. I say, go for it!

While I cannot stand these names, I don’t think they are “terrible”. They sound pretentious to me but I never would have thought of Ride Her!

I think they are both very usable names. I don’t personally know any Holdens, but I do know a little [name_m]Ryder[/name_m]. It’s not my style, but I don’t have any negative feelings toward either name. Good luck!

Personally I’m not a huge fan of [name_m]Ryder[/name_m], but I also don’t think it’s awful. I do prefer [name_m]Holden[/name_m], but I think the fact that [name_m]Ryder[/name_m] is so significantly tied into your past is also a beautiful story for him to tell when he’s older!

I really like [name_m]Holden[/name_m] (I have no problems with the [name_m]Holden[/name_m] Caulfield connection, I love that book). I won’t use [name_m]Holden[/name_m] though because in Australia (where I live) it is a very popular brand of car.

I am not a fan of [name_m]Ryder[/name_m], but it isn’t terrible.

Thank you all so much! You’re so kind. I’m not sure if I’m using this site correctly it’s a little confusing. I appreciate all the feedback. I am surprised to hear that the names sound pretentious. That’s the last thing I thought! Kind of funny all the different opinions.

Thank you

I absolutely love [name_m]Holden[/name_m]! [name_m]Ryder[/name_m] does sound like Ride her.

I like [name_m]Holden[/name_m]. [name_m]Ryder[/name_m], not such a big fan. I think you could add it in as a second middle name though, i.e. [name_m]Holden[/name_m] [name_m]Jacob[/name_m] [name_m]Ryder[/name_m].

I think both [name_m]Holden[/name_m] and [name_m]Ryder[/name_m] are perfectly fine names. I personally love the name [name_m]Holden[/name_m] so that would be my preference, but I also admire the connection you have with [name_m]Ryder[/name_m]. I don’t think you could go wrong with either name you choose.

[name_m]Ryder[/name_m] strong played the best friend on boy meets world and wasn’t be just too cold … And [name_m]Holden[/name_m] I mean catcher in the rye anyone ? Both are legitimate nanes that scream Midwestern states, peaceful charm & are both decently popular on this site

I never thought of those associations. I know a little boy named [name_m]Ryder[/name_m] and it sounds perfect, no one ever said anything about it.
I love both [name_m]Ryder[/name_m] and [name_m]Holden[/name_m]. I think they are unique but not too unique. They are very modern and totally 21st century! There is absolutly nothing wrong with them.

I’m not a huge fan of [name_m]Holden[/name_m], and while [name_m]Ryder[/name_m] is not my style, I do like the name! I think [name_m]Ryder[/name_m] [name_m]Jacob[/name_m] (or [name_m]Holden[/name_m] [name_m]Jacob[/name_m]) is totally usable and a nice name! An alternative to [name_m]Ryder[/name_m] (to lose Ride her, which now that you’ve pointed out, I can’t stop seeing, but I wouldn’t have heard it if you hadn’t said it), would be [name_m]Ryker[/name_m]. I think I prefer [name_m]Ryder[/name_m] though!

They’re not my style but even still, I don’t think they’re terrible names. They just sound a bit too modern and American (if you’re American and living in [name_u]America[/name_u] then perfect!) for me to use, however, I don’t think either name would cause the child to by bullied and in fact I think they’d fit right in with one of these names. If you like them, go for it, I don’t see anything negative about them whatsoever. If I were to choose one, I’d go with [name_m]Ryder[/name_m]. [name_m]Ryder[/name_m] [name_m]Jacob[/name_m] sounds great.
