Are These Names Too Far Out?

I really love names that are unusual and rarely used, and names that are classical. The only problem is I don’t want to name my children something that is too bizarre and strange. There’s only four names that I’m concerned about, and I’d like to know if I should just get rid of these names completly, or keep them.

[name_f]Andromeda[/name_f]
[name_f]Arwen[/name_f]
[name_f]Luna[/name_f]
[name_m]Perseus[/name_m]

[name_f]Andromeda[/name_f] is a little long and maybe the least usable on your list in its full form. If she goes by [name_f]Annie[/name_f] or [name_f]Meda[/name_f] it may be ok. I think [name_f]Arwen[/name_f] has a pretty sound. I don’t care for [name_f]Luna[/name_f] and this name is very trendy. [name_m]Perseus[/name_m] is fine if you’re into Greek mythology and are well-versed with his story.

[name_f]Luna[/name_f] is a widely recognised and used name (thanks, in part, to HP), so you should be fine with that one. [name_f]Arwen[/name_f] has a pleasant sound and is very usable. [name_f]Andromeda[/name_f] and [name_m]Perseus[/name_m] are more unusual, but with more common nicknames e.g. [name_f]Annie[/name_f]/[name_u]Andy[/name_u]/[name_f]Meda[/name_f] for [name_f]Andromeda[/name_f] and maybe [name_u]Percy[/name_u] for [name_m]Perseus[/name_m], they would become more usable. Personally, I love [name_f]Luna[/name_f], and like [name_f]Arwen[/name_f], but the other two are nms. [name_f]Hope[/name_f] I helped x

I love [name_f]Arwen[/name_f] and [name_f]Luna[/name_f]. [name_m]Both[/name_m] are very usable I feel and are on my list as well. [name_f]Andromeda[/name_f] and [name_m]Perseus[/name_m] are nms, they remind me of SciFi characters. But, hey, if you’re going for that…

[name_f]Luna[/name_f] is the only one that is usable. I would hate being named andromeda.

I think they’re all fine except for andromeda

[name_f]Arwen[/name_f] & [name_f]Luna[/name_f] are my faves from your list XX

Thank you to everyone who replied. I’m keeping my lovely [name_f]Luna[/name_f] and [name_f]Arwen[/name_f] and throwing away the other two.

I know an [name_f]Andromeda[/name_f] (hung out with her as a teenager) and she is around 30 now, so it definitely usable. It will be a very distinct name so if you say [name_f]Andromeda[/name_f] everyone will know who you are referring to. She never encountered any real problems with it though.

I love [name_f]Luna[/name_f].
[name_f]Arwen[/name_f] has such a strong association to lord of the rings, that this is the one at the bottom of my list, I can appreciate [name_m]Perseus[/name_m].

I think all are usable, some are just more distinct than others

Hm, well now I know that [name_f]Andromeda[/name_f] is actually used, it’s back up, and I’m debating with [name_m]Perseus[/name_m].

I really like all 3 of the girl names. [name_m]Even[/name_m] [name_f]Andromeda[/name_f] is beautiful and I’d love to meet one. [name_f]Luna[/name_f] and [name_f]Arwen[/name_f] are both lovely.

I don’t like [name_m]Perseus[/name_m] at all.

[name_f]Andromeda[/name_f] and [name_f]Luna[/name_f] are my favourites.

[name_f]Andromeda[/name_f] is great. Has a range of nicknames, too. I like [name_m]Rommie[/name_m] best, my husband REALLY loves [name_f]Andie[/name_f] though. I would forbid [name_f]Annie[/name_f], personally, but I can live with [name_f]Andie[/name_f]. It’s not longer than [name_f]Alexandra[/name_f] or [name_f]Aurelia[/name_f] or [name_f]Ariana[/name_f] or plenty of other popular girls’ names - long is in. [name_f]Ariadne[/name_f] is nice too but the -a ending goes better with my surname than an -ee sound.

I don’t hate [name_f]Arwen[/name_f] but I love a lot of -wen names and it doesn’t make my top five. I also would like a more general Welsh mythology feel than a straight up LOTR reference.

Luna is really cute but I think I would only use it as a middle name. I really am unfond of Lulu, which is also the only nickname for it I can think of. And even if not intended as a Harry Potter thing I still have friends that would make noise about that if I used it as a FN.

[name_m]Perseus[/name_m] is the least usable to me, but I have a phobia of [name_u]Percy[/name_u] and don’t like [name_u]Perry[/name_u] either.

I love [name_f]Luna[/name_f]! [name_m]Perseus[/name_m] is very nice. [name_f]Arwen[/name_f] is just very… LOTR… It doesn’t seem to fit well outside of Middle [name_f]Earth[/name_f]. [name_f]Andromeda[/name_f] is a bit much.

Best of luck!

@stripedsocks [name_f]Andie[/name_f] is very lovely for a little girl, but with [name_f]Luna[/name_f], since I know nothing of [name_m]Harry[/name_m] [name_m]Potter[/name_m] I had no idea that [name_f]Luna[/name_f] was even in it!
For everyone that said [name_f]Arwen[/name_f] was too [name_m]Lord[/name_m] of the Rings, that’s actually where I got it, and thought it was a gorgeous name, I just didn’t know if it was usable on an actual person!

[name_f]Arwen[/name_f] was my favorite at one time, but it always polls surprisingly badly outside NB. It seems to be quite polarizing…people either love it or hate it. I guess it sounds masculine to some people.

[name_f]Andromeda[/name_f] is one of my favorite GP names but I still would probably be too chicken to use it, even if DH allowed it.

[name_m]Perseus[/name_m] is so cool. [name_f]Love[/name_f] love love. Same with [name_f]Andromeda[/name_f], though…still probably wouldn’t use it.

[name_f]Luna[/name_f] is definitely usable, but too boring for my liking.

I can see that. [name_u]Arlen[/name_u] is a lot more common. I know an old man named [name_u]Arlen[/name_u] and I’ve never heard of an [name_f]Arwen[/name_f] outside of LOTR and NB.

I adore all of them! I think they’re all absolutely lovely and very wearable.

I adore your style!
Given that Welsh names with the -wen ending are trendy right now, [name_f]Arwen[/name_f] is fine. [name_f]Luna[/name_f] is also fairly popular.
As for [name_f]Andromeda[/name_f] and [name_m]Perseus[/name_m], I know so many children named [name_f]Persephone[/name_f] right now, I can’t help but think that neither are too far out when all of them have a very Greek mythological vibe. Personally, I find [name_f]Andromeda[/name_f] to me much prettier than [name_f]Persephone[/name_f] anyway.

Iamamiam - I agree that people do find it masculine, I never thought of it until I mentioned it to my sister who told me she’ll just call her [name_m]Arnie[/name_m] :frowning:

Sohluella - Thank you!

Bibliophile - Thank you for your comment! I’ve never heard of [name_f]Luna[/name_f] outside of NB, so I thought it must’ve been popular just here. And I do know a lot of [name_f]Persephone[/name_f]'s as well, just not [name_m]Perseus[/name_m] nor [name_f]Andromeda[/name_f].

I think [name_f]Luna[/name_f] is the most ‘normal’. I like [name_f]Arwen[/name_f] too, though I did used to think it rather masculine, it has grown on me. [name_f]Andromeda[/name_f] is the ‘weirdest’ in my opinion and I’m not a personal fan. I do like [name_m]Perseus[/name_m], mostly because it has [name_u]Percy[/name_u] as a nn.
