I have a few names that I like but I think they may be too old, but I’m not sure. Hoping y’all can help me out!
I love the name [name_m]Zigmund[/name_m], it was my grandfather’s middle name and I love the nicknames Zig and [name_m]Ziggy[/name_m]. [name_f]Do[/name_f] you think it’s too old and out there, or able to be revived? I’ve never liked the idea of naming a child after someone, but my late grandpa’s name is [name_m]Felix[/name_m] [name_m]Zigmund[/name_m] and I love it. Should I just stick with [name_m]Felix[/name_m]?
Is [name_m]Grover[/name_m] too old and too [name_f]Sesame[/name_f]-streetish? I used to think so but with [name_m]Oscar[/name_m] becoming popular, could [name_m]Grover[/name_m] work? (I love [name_m]Oscar[/name_m] too but my cousin has a son named this)
Is [name_m]Orville[/name_m] too old/too related to popcorn?
Is [name_m]Wilbur[/name_m] too childish/old/piggish? (I like both of the [name_m]Wright[/name_m] brother’s names LOL)
These names are all very Telegraph-y to me right now–that is, names that I could easily see being used on a child of the gentry but not anyone else. Especially [name_m]Wilbur[/name_m], I see a lot of [name_m]Wilbur[/name_m] in there.
Personally I think [name_m]Wilbur[/name_m] is the most usable because he can be [name_m]Will[/name_m] or [name_m]Bill[/name_m].
[name_m]Zigmund[/name_m] might be difficult outside of a [name_m]German[/name_m] speaking country, since that’s not a spelling people are going to be super familiar with. At least I would assume [name_m]Sigmund[/name_m].
All names I like. I would happily use any of them except [name_m]Grover[/name_m]. I do like [name_m]Grover[/name_m] but I just don’t think it’s ready for revival. I personally think [name_m]Zigmund[/name_m], [name_m]Orville[/name_m] and [name_m]Wilbur[/name_m] are though. My husband disagreed with me on all 3 of them. He did approve [name_m]Orson[/name_m], Orwell and [name_m]Wilfred[/name_m] though… nothing remotely similar to [name_m]Zigmund[/name_m] was put on my hubby approved list… I guess [name_m]Redmond[/name_m] would have been the closest.
[name_m]Zigmund[/name_m] is interesting. I am not wild about the name and dislike [name_m]Ziggy[/name_m] intensely, but that’s mostly b/c I had a creepy student with that name. Not bad names, but there would be no way to know if your son would feel bothered by the name/nn. Of course, that’s true about most names, right?
That said, I adore [name_m]Grover[/name_m] and [name_u]Grove[/name_u], [name_m]Orville[/name_m] and [name_u]Orrie[/name_u], and [name_m]Wilbur[/name_m] and [name_m]Will[/name_m]/[name_m]Wilkie[/name_m].
We just saw the coolest exhibit on the [name_m]Wright[/name_m] brothers at the [name_f]Air[/name_f] and Space Museum in [name_m]Washington[/name_m] DC and it reminded me of how much I love those names, including [name_m]Wright[/name_m].
I like [name_m]Zigmund[/name_m], non Zig/[name_m]Ziggy[/name_m]. It’s totally usable in my opinion and great family connection. Not crazy about the others.
[name_m]Zigmund[/name_m] - the nn [name_m]Ziggy[/name_m] or Zig really makes it quite modern I think. However, all I think when I hear it is Freud, which puts me off the name. I do love [name_m]Felix[/name_m] though. I think [name_m]Zigmund[/name_m] is usable, just quite brave.
[name_m]Grover[/name_m] - I actually really like [name_m]Grover[/name_m]. I’m outside the US which might affect my opinion of the name (I don’t know where you live). The name makes me think of a character in the [name_u]Percy[/name_u] [name_m]Jackson[/name_m] series, which is pretty ‘modern’ I have no links to [name_m]Grover[/name_m] being that old (and I didn’t watch much [name_f]Sesame[/name_f] [name_m]Street[/name_m] as a child, but I don’t think links to [name_f]Sesame[/name_f] [name_m]Street[/name_m] would be that bad!)
[name_m]Orville[/name_m] - I quite like [name_m]Orville[/name_m], it makes me think of Bournville (Chocolate) and I have no association with popcorn. Once again I assume this is because we live in different countries. I think it is fairly ‘old’ sounding, but lots of names are at the moment so I don’t think it would be too big a deal. You might like Arwell?
[name_m]Wilbur[/name_m] - I did automatically think of [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f]'s [name_m]Web[/name_m], but I do think the name is usable, and slightly less out there than [name_m]Zigmund[/name_m]. The nn [name_m]Will[/name_m] makes it very wearable.
[name_m]Zigmund[/name_m] - I love this name!! It doesn’t feel dated to me at all, and I think Zig is a charming nickname. Definitely usable
[name_m]Grover[/name_m] - I’ve never watched [name_f]Sesame[/name_f] [name_m]Street[/name_m] so I don’t associate the name [name_m]Grover[/name_m] with that. The -er ending makes it sound modern
[name_m]Orville[/name_m] - [name_m]Orville[/name_m] does feel quite old to me, though it could work as a middle name. I’ve never heard of [name_m]Orville[/name_m] popcorn but then again I live in Europe
[name_m]Wilbur[/name_m] - This is one of my favorite names! Like the pp said, the nickname [name_m]Will[/name_m] makes this much more usable. I was a big fan of [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f]'s [name_m]Web[/name_m] as a kid but it’s still not the first connection I make and it doesn’t bother me at all
I think that the best one there is [name_m]Wilbur[/name_m] because when he gets to age 13-14 if he really wants to he can be [name_m]Will[/name_m] or [name_m]Bill[/name_m]
I really love [name_m]Zigmund[/name_m], especially with the nickname [name_m]Ziggy[/name_m] and a family connection. It’s fun and unusual but still recognizable (which are all things that I, personally, value in a name).
[name_m]Grover[/name_m] is not my favorite, but I can see it working on a child today.
As for [name_m]Orville[/name_m], I’ve never been seen the appeal. I truly think my issue with it is that I dislike the first syllable, it’s just very attractive to me.
Now [name_m]Wilbur[/name_m] I really like. 100% and completely usable in my opinion. I think I love it even more when I think of [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f]’s [name_m]Web[/name_m], if I’m being honest. It’s a great name and has some great nickname options ([name_m]Bill[/name_m]/y, [name_m]Wilkie[/name_m], [name_m]Will[/name_m], and I could even see [name_u]Barry[/name_u] working).
My final favorite from your list is [name_m]Zigmund[/name_m] it’s the one you said you loved and I can never pass on a family connection.
I think all 4 names are fine to use. Most will be able to easily pronounce and spell all 4 and while all are unusual none are so out there as to be unheard of. The connection with a beloved grandfather is especially lovely.
Yes to [name_m]Wilbur[/name_m] and [name_m]Grover[/name_m]! [name_m]Zigmund[/name_m] could work on the right person… maybe. The -ville names not so much.
I like [name_m]Felix[/name_m] best of the names you suggested. Though the combo of [name_m]Felix[/name_m] [name_m]Zigmund[/name_m] is pretty awesome. I’d be tempted to use it in full.
I love [name_m]Zigmund[/name_m] and totally see it as usuable! -mund does make it seem a bit older but the spunky Zig- goes well as softens the ‘oldness’
My first thought was sesame street and it doesn’t sound like a name at all and because of SS I associate it with rubbish; sorry.
I didn’t even know it was a popcorn brand until you said! I think it’s a bit of a bold choice for a first, maybe a middle?
[name_m]Wilbur[/name_m] is so handsome! It could totally work but my first thought was [name_m]Wilbur[/name_m] the wildcat. (mascot for a basketball team in my country)
I honestly love all of these names! I don’t really think there is such a thing as a name being too old. I think sometimes names can be dated if they went through a trendy surge, but given enough time they cycle back.
[name_f]Every[/name_f] name on your list is totally usable.
