Are these names too "same-y"?

[name]Hi[/name], newbie here…

I have a daughter, [name]Miranda[/name], who will be almost 2 when her sister is born next [name]January[/name]/February, and the husband and I are almost ready to swap name lists for the final choosing process  We’ve already mentioned a few names to each other and one that just keeps coming up is [name]Matilda[/name], but I’m really concerned that [name]Miranda[/name] and [name]Matilda[/name] are far too similar.

Bit more info: we call [name]Miranda[/name] ‘[name]Mia[/name]’ for short sometimes and would probably go with ‘[name]Milly[/name]’ as a nn for [name]Matilda[/name]. [name]Both[/name] of us also love [name]Milly[/name] but would prefer to give her the option of a longer, more formal name when she’s older. Other top pick at the moment is [name]Camille[/name]. I love [name]Amelia[/name] as well, but it’s becoming very common where I live.

What do you think? Are [name]Miranda[/name] and [name]Matilda[/name] too similar? Should we cross [name]Matilda[/name] off the list? Does anyone have any other suggestions to add to the list?

thanks in advance!

I think they are too similar and I feel you might end up locking yourself into an M theme if you choose to have more children. I think [name]Miranda[/name] and [name]Camille[/name] would be adorable.

With that said, my [name]SIL[/name] has two daughters, [name]Nora[/name] and [name]Nina[/name], many find it cute because they match, but again she’s prob not going to have more children. To me it’s a tad too much.

I adore [name]Matilda[/name] but do find the two to be quite close. Could be quite the tongue twister when you factor in mommy brain! [name]Camille[/name] is beautiful and would be perfect with [name]Miranda[/name].

I don’t think it’s an issue. They both start with M and have the same number of syllables, but they don’t really have the same sounds in them, KWIM? Their similar, but very different, [name]IMO[/name].

(off topic: I love seeing a little [name]Miranda[/name]!)

[name]Camille[/name] is adorable and it goes well with [name]Miranda[/name]

I think [name]Matilda[/name] could work if you really loved it, but it’s too close for my taste, that being said I also adore [name]Camille[/name]/[name]Camilla[/name].

I too find [name]Miranda[/name] and [name]Matilda[/name] too close. Especially with [name]Mia[/name] and [name]Milly[/name].
If [name]Matilda[/name] went by [name]Tilly[/name] instead of [name]Milly[/name] I’d be more inclined to say “go with what you love” but with both given and nick-names being so close I don’t see how there wouldn’t be constant confusion in the house.

I too really like [name]Amelia[/name] and am sad at it’s new rise to popularity. Have you considered the very similar but slightly less popular [name]Amelie[/name] ([name]Melly[/name])? (Bonus would be that the ending isn’t another a ending). I know it’s very different but how about [name]Aurelia[/name] ([name]Aura[/name] or [name]Ella[/name])? It keeps the A- beginning and -elia ending and while it sounds very different to me it feels like it comes from the same era.

Others that I like with [name]Miranda[/name] include: [name]Henrietta[/name] ([name]Mia[/name] and [name]Etta[/name] or [name]Hattie[/name]), [name]Felicity[/name] ([name]Mia[/name] and Fliss or [name]Fee[/name]), [name]Josephine[/name] ([name]Mia[/name] and [name]Josey[/name] or [name]Posey[/name]).

Good [name]Luck[/name]!!! and Congrats.

I really like the suggestion of [name]Camille[/name]/[name]Camilla[/name]. I think it has the same feel as [name]Matilda[/name], but without sharing the starting sound with [name]Miranda[/name].

I am having hte same problem choosing a name for my second daughter without it being to “matchy matchy”… I found this article informative and helpful when considering sibling names: Sibling Names: The Ultimate Guide | Nameberry

Thank you for all the responses! tk, the mama brain thing had occurred to me… my siblings and I grew up answering to “darling” as well as each others’ names when we could tell our mum was having a senior moment

lexiem, thank you for the suggestions. I love Henrietta - might have to add that one to the list!

edited to add: catloverd, this one is definitely the last one for us unless there’s a miracle/accident - I’m far too old to go through pregnancy again

Yes, they are too similar. [name]Henrietta[/name] would go nicely with [name]Miranda[/name], though. [name]Mia[/name] and [name]Hetty[/name]/[name]Hattie[/name]/[name]Etta[/name]? Gorgeous.

I don’t think they are too similar. They both start with an M and end with an “ah” sound but the middle is completely different and like you said the nicknames will be quite different. You might get their names mixed up when you are trying to say them, but they can be completely different and still have the same problem. [name]Trust[/name] me, my dog’s name is [name]Shadow[/name] and my son’s name is [name]Luther[/name] and I still get their names mixed up sometimes. Also, I think people overestimate the problem of their being a theme with the sibsets. Having two children with the same initial and then one child being left out isn’t that big of a deal.

I really love the name [name]Matilda[/name] and the meaning of the name, so I am partial to it to begin with.

If your girls go by [name]Mia[/name] and [name]Milly[/name], I think it would be fine. They’re a bit similar, but different as well. Maybe [name]Tilly[/name] as a nickname for [name]Matilda[/name] too? But, kids don’t always stick with the nicknames that you have given them; sometimes they outgrow them or just stop using it after a while. Anway, [name]Miranda[/name] and [name]Matilda[/name] seem a little too similar for me. What about [name]Matilda[/name] as a middle name?

As for [name]Camille[/name] and [name]Amelia[/name]…

I think [name]Camille[/name] is a nice name, very regal and feminine. But, it reminds me of [name]Camilla[/name], Duchess of Cornwall. I don’t like her as much as [name]Princess[/name] [name]Di[/name] :frowning: You could also have [name]Milly[/name] as a nickname for [name]Camille[/name].

I love [name]Amelia[/name]! Maybe [name]Emilia[/name] could make it a little more unique? I personally prefer that spelling, but it might give her trouble. Nicknames: [name]Amy[/name], [name]Mimi[/name], [name]Ellie[/name], [name]Leah[/name]

Good luck!

I think they are too similar. The nicknames are quite different, but as they get older they may want to go by their full names and they would be too similar. I think [name]Camille[/name] is a great choice. It goes well with [name]Miranda[/name] and you can still use the [name]Milly[/name] nm.

[name]How[/name] many famillies have more than three children? Of course people need to think ahead (and that’s reason why many of famillies have one child), but I aslo think there’s some people who like 10 names that are very, very matchy and they will use it with no worries how some dogs are named, so this article is kinda dooomb.

[name]Hi[/name] all, I thought I’d update … Our second daughter was born on 14 [name]January[/name], a couple of weeks early and only 6lb6oz but perfectly healthy! After much discussion my husband and I decided to name her [name]Matilda[/name] [name]Evangeline[/name]. It ended up being the only name that both of us absolutely loved  We’re already calling her [name]Milly[/name] for short and so far I’ve only slipped up once and called her by her big sister’s name

Thank you to everyone for your input into this thread and for welcoming me to nameberry

Congratulations from one mother of a [name]Matilda[/name] to another!
