Are these respectable enough names? I want brutal opinions!

Hi all, I keep telling myself I need to stop posting on these baby boards, but I’m just obsessed with baby names! I’m not expecting, nor are me and my partner trying, but I constantly find myself thinking about future children’s names!

Anyway, I’ve been hearing some awful baby names lately from friends who are having children, and it got me wondering if the names I like are good enough… you know? I find myself judging other peoples baby names lately… and I want mine to be perfect I guess. Not too pretentious, common, popular or dull… and not too over the top, or ‘no one would hire someone with a name spelled Taeytn’ (no joke thats an actual newborns name near me) …and at the same time they have to be pronounceable, real names, not outdated… and not names they’ll get bullied for…and also something with nickname potentials… Seems like a lot to ask for?

So here are my candidates, many have been favorites for a long time;

Verity (nn Vera or Ettie)
Emilia (nn Millie)
Amelie (nn Millie)
Georgina (nn Georgie or Gina)
Alexandra (possibly no nickname)
Geneva (nn Gina, Ginny, or Eva)
Anya (no nickname)

I would love some other suggestions too

[name_f]Verity[/name_f] (nn [name_f]Vera[/name_f] or [name_f]Ettie[/name_f]) - Not my style, but a lovely name.
[name_f]Emilia[/name_f] (nn [name_f]Millie[/name_f]) - Again, lovely, but not my style. [name_f]Millie[/name_f] is a bit of a stretch from [name_f]Emilia[/name_f], unless you’re pronouncing it em-ill-ee-uh. I’ve always heard em-ee-lee-uh.
[name_f]Amelie[/name_f] (nn [name_f]Millie[/name_f]) - I love the name [name_f]Amelie[/name_f], again, [name_f]Millie[/name_f] is a stretch. Frankly, I don’t think this one needs a nickname.
[name_f]Georgina[/name_f] (nn [name_u]Georgie[/name_u] or [name_f]Gina[/name_f]) - Not my favorite.
[name_f]Alexandra[/name_f] (possibly no nickname) - I prefer [name_f]Alexandria[/name_f]. [name_f]Alexandra[/name_f]'s a tad too popular, and frankly this one is the most prone to (wanted or not) a nickname.
[name_f]Geneva[/name_f] (nn [name_f]Gina[/name_f], [name_f]Ginny[/name_f], or [name_f]Eva[/name_f]) - Are you Swiss? It’s cute, but if the city has no meaning to you, it’s a little silly.
[name_f]Anya[/name_f] (no nickname) - Cute. I like this name.

[name_f]Vienna[/name_f]
[name_f]Berenice[/name_f]
[name_f]Guinevere[/name_f]
[name_f]Natalie[/name_f]
[name_f]Verona[/name_f]
[name_f]Gemma[/name_f]

No I’m not Swiss but my Godmother and namesake lives in [name_f]Geneva[/name_f].

I think everyone secretly judges other people’s baby name choices!

I honesty think of your names are very respectable and would work well in everyday society.

[name_f]Verity[/name_f] - I love this name it’s lovely, elegant, classic. I think the nicknames [name_f]Vera[/name_f] and [name_f]Ettie[/name_f] work nicely but I would prefer Vee which is just sweet. [name_f]Verity[/name_f] is an effortless choice.

[name_f]Emilia[/name_f] - Out of [name_f]Amelia[/name_f] and [name_f]Emilia[/name_f], [name_f]Emilia[/name_f] is my favourite the name is fresh and wholesome. [name_f]Emilia[/name_f] has a lovely sound, she feels effortless and looks sweet. I also love the nicknames surrounding [name_f]Emilia[/name_f] such as [name_f]Emmy[/name_f], [name_f]Mila[/name_f], [name_f]Lia[/name_f], [name_f]Mia[/name_f] etc it’s just a refreshing choice. A nice twist on [name_f]Amelia[/name_f].

[name_f]Georgina[/name_f] - Ugh! I hate [name_m]George[/name_m] names including [name_f]Georgina[/name_f] which too me just sounds unattractive.

[name_f]Alexandra[/name_f] - A lovely classic with a really demure sound. [name_f]Alexandra[/name_f] feels refreshing and looks very elegant. She has a regal presence. She works world-wide and has a beautiful sound. I also love the nicknames surrounding [name_f]Alexandra[/name_f] such as [name_u]Alex[/name_u], [name_u]Lexi[/name_u], [name_f]Xandra[/name_f], [name_u]Ali[/name_u] etc. My favourite nickname is [name_u]Lexi[/name_u]. [name_f]Alexandra[/name_f] is a lovely name.

[name_f]Geneva[/name_f] - [name_m]Ah[/name_m] a gorgeous place name!! [name_f]Geneva[/name_f] has a wholesome sound and looks very together. She’s a sweet sound and visually looks pleasing. [name_f]Geneva[/name_f] is just great. I love the nicknames you’ve mentioned for this delightful place name. I’d like to just mention the nicknames [name_f]Gen[/name_f], [name_f]Evie[/name_f], and [name_f]Neva[/name_f] which is also cool.

[name_f]Anya[/name_f] - A lovely name with so much spunk. I really don’t feel [name_f]Anya[/name_f] needs a nickname but a potential one could be [name_f]Annie[/name_f] which is cute. I also like [name_f]Anya[/name_f] as a nickname for [name_f]Anastasia[/name_f] which is beautiful.

: )

I think all of your names could be defined as “respectable” so I’m going to rate them in order of preference.

1 [name_f]Georgina[/name_f]
2 [name_f]Alexandra[/name_f]
3 [name_f]Verity[/name_f]
4 [name_f]Emilia[/name_f]
5 [name_f]Geneva[/name_f]
6 [name_f]Amelie[/name_f]
7 [name_f]Anya[/name_f]

[name_f]Veronica[/name_f]

[name_f]Verity[/name_f] (nn [name_f]Vera[/name_f] or [name_f]Ettie[/name_f]) - The meaning is nice but I’m not a fan of virtue names, it feels like the kids have to live up to meaning later on. It also reminds me of Variety.
[name_f]Emilia[/name_f] (nn [name_f]Millie[/name_f]) - love this, [name_f]Millie[/name_f] is sweet, [name_f]Emilia[/name_f] is gorgeous.
[name_f]Amelie[/name_f] (nn [name_f]Millie[/name_f]) - same as above
[name_f]Georgina[/name_f] (nn [name_u]Georgie[/name_u] or [name_f]Gina[/name_f]) - not a fan of the name
[name_f]Alexandra[/name_f] (possibly no nickname) - very masculine sounding
[name_f]Geneva[/name_f] (nn [name_f]Gina[/name_f], [name_f]Ginny[/name_f], or [name_f]Eva[/name_f]) - never heard of this name before, sounds really old
[name_f]Anya[/name_f] (no nickname) - where I live you only find 30 to 40 year olds with that name, so I can’t picture it on a little girl.

I only really like [name_f]Emilia[/name_f] and [name_f]Amelie[/name_f] but I wouldn’t categorize the rest as weird or unusable. [name_f]Geneva[/name_f] is a bit out there for me though

[name_f]Verity[/name_f] (nn [name_f]Vera[/name_f] or [name_f]Ettie[/name_f]) - It’s cute, my name, [name_f]Faith[/name_f], is a virtue name too and I don’t feel a pressure to live up to my name or anything.
[name_f]Emilia[/name_f] (nn [name_f]Millie[/name_f]) - This is cute, but people might misspell it as [name_f]Amelia[/name_f]
[name_f]Amelie[/name_f] (nn [name_f]Millie[/name_f]) - I’ve known someone with this name. She pronounced it as [name_f]Emily[/name_f], so it didn’t seem that unique
[name_f]Georgina[/name_f] (nn [name_u]Georgie[/name_u] or [name_f]Gina[/name_f]) - Cute, but it does have the name [name_m]George[/name_m] in it, so she might get bullied for that if there’s a kid named [name_m]George[/name_m] in her class.
[name_f]Alexandra[/name_f] (possibly no nickname) - I have a cousin with this name and she doesn’t go by any nicknames either. It’s a beautiful name by itself.
[name_f]Geneva[/name_f] (nn [name_f]Gina[/name_f], [name_f]Ginny[/name_f], or [name_f]Eva[/name_f]) - I like this, especially the nickname [name_f]Ginny[/name_f].
[name_f]Anya[/name_f] (no nickname) - Cute!

So here are my candidates, many have been favorites for a long time;

[name_f]Verity[/name_f] (nn [name_f]Vera[/name_f] or [name_f]Ettie[/name_f])
[name_f]Emilia[/name_f] (nn [name_f]Millie[/name_f])
[name_f]Amelie[/name_f] (nn [name_f]Millie[/name_f])
[name_f]Georgina[/name_f] (nn [name_u]Georgie[/name_u] or [name_f]Gina[/name_f])
[name_f]Alexandra[/name_f] (possibly no nickname)
[name_f]Geneva[/name_f] (nn [name_f]Gina[/name_f], [name_f]Ginny[/name_f], or [name_f]Eva[/name_f])
[name_f]Anya[/name_f] (no nickname)

Of these names I think [name_f]Anya[/name_f] is such a beautiful name.
[name_f]Georgina[/name_f] is nice also. I would just be afraid that people might want to call her georgie or george as a nickname.
[name_f]Alexandra[/name_f] was way popular about what 8 or 10 years ago?? [name_u]Alex[/name_u] will probably be a nickname.
[name_f]Geneva[/name_f] is so pretty and I don’t think it is very common.

I think these are your best bets. I am sure you will find a beautiful name for your bundle of joy. Keep us posted please!!

The only one I feel lacks respectability is [name_f]Georgina[/name_f]. My feeling could be unfair and based on having known a horrible girl with that name once, but I think it has more to do with a sense that it’s a an effort to contort the name [name_m]George[/name_m] into something unnatural and girly.

The others, while not all my style, strike me as sufficiently respectable.

I will just give my verdict on each one but all of them are good solid names that will age well.
[name_f]Verity[/name_f] (nn [name_f]Vera[/name_f] or [name_f]Ettie[/name_f])-NMS but it would be lovely to meet a little [name_f]Verity[/name_f]. I [name_f]LOVE[/name_f] the nicknames.
[name_f]Emilia[/name_f] (nn [name_f]Millie[/name_f])- Nice but common where I am.
[name_f]Amelie[/name_f] (nn [name_f]Millie[/name_f])-See above
[name_f]Georgina[/name_f] (nn [name_u]Georgie[/name_u] or [name_f]Gina[/name_f])-Golly this is nice. I haven’t met many young [name_f]Georgina[/name_f]'s and it could suit a lot of personality types.
[name_f]Alexandra[/name_f] (possibly no nickname)-Bit boring for me but wearable and pretty.
[name_f]Geneva[/name_f] (nn [name_f]Gina[/name_f], [name_f]Ginny[/name_f], or [name_f]Eva[/name_f])-Regardless of whether you have links to this city, it is beautiful but well grounded, wearable and will age well.
[name_f]Anya[/name_f] (no nickname)-I like this name a lot. It is more interesting than [name_f]Ann[/name_f]/[name_f]Anna[/name_f] but not made up or trendified.

They are all respectable, and I just highlighted [name_f]Verity[/name_f] and [name_f]Geneva[/name_f] in another post as some of my best suggestions. On trend, in a good way. [name_f]Verity[/name_f] is a great virtue name and doesn’t end in “a” which is so common for girls. The variations are also great ([name_f]Vera[/name_f], [name_f]Verena[/name_f], [name_f]Verita[/name_f], Veritas etc) I think [name_f]Geneva[/name_f] is ready for a comeback. It was popular in the early 1900s US so that follows the 100 year rule. The possibility for nn “[name_f]Neve[/name_f]” is a plus, or “[name_f]Jen[/name_f]/[name_f]Jenna[/name_f]/[name_f]Jenny[/name_f]/[name_f]Ginny[/name_f]” if you prefer. Sure, it is a place name…but the [name_f]Geneva[/name_f] Convention gives it a peaceful connotation imo.

Whether your child gets bullied is going to largely be based on whether she fits in at her school, not whether her name meets with approval on a name nerd site on the internet = ). If little Taeytn’ ends up being the most popular girl at school, your daughter may spend elementary school wishing her name was Kaeytn’.

That being said though, I think all of those names would be just fine in the larger world. [name_f]Emilia[/name_f], [name_f]Alexandra[/name_f], and [name_f]Geneva[/name_f] seem the most “normal” to me. The others are a little “Oh, that’s an unusual name” (assuming, based on your complaints about your neighbors’ name choices, that you don’t live in a place where a lot of people share your taste) but not at all in a negative way.
