Are we terrible parents if we name our baby boy Ajax?

I think it’s a strong name and it follows current trends (like [name]Jack[/name], [name]Jackson[/name]).

What do YOU think?

Ummm…im not quite sure. Maybe its just not my style, and maybe im just weird but the first thing i thought was high jacks, like “he high jacks planes” or something. Then i thought of Kojack, a dog. Thats what it was, it sounds like a dogs name to me. Sorry:( But i could just be totally weird!

Here’s what [name]Pam[/name] and [name]Linda[/name] wrote about [name]Ajax[/name]: "Though it does have the reference to the Trojan war hero, we’re afraid it’s too closely connected with the cleanser to work as a name. "

I have to agree. When I see “[name]Ajax[/name],” I can’t help but think of the cleanser, specifically “[name]Ajax[/name] Spray n Wipe.” :frowning:

Good luck!

[name]Ajax[/name] cleanser is so well known the child will get a lot of flack if you name him [name]Ajax[/name].

Why not just name him [name]Jack[/name]?

I think [name]Atlas[/name] is a more usable choice or even [name]Zeus[/name]?

yes, it seems like you are being TOO TRENDY. sorry. just being honest…

Noooo! [name]Don[/name]'t listen to the comments above. It is a fantastic name with a great myth behind it. He could very easily get the nickname [name]Jax[/name] as well.

And let’s be honest – as far as teasing goes, the cleaner association is pretty darn mild. I love this website but good lord, I find [name]Felix[/name] and [name]Hugo[/name] much worse names than [name]Ajax[/name] and those names are loved here!

Oh, I just adore this name!!!

When I was little, my Mom used to use the cleaner, but to be honest, it’s not something I really see so often anymore. Not sure why??
(I know I prefer to use cleansers that are less harsh - usually organic products - but I wonder if [name]Ajax[/name] is less commonly used now in genera than it used to be?)

Anyway, I think it is a FANTASTIC name with awesome references. Also, have you ever read [name]Toni[/name] [name]Morrison[/name]'s [name]Sula[/name]? The name [name]Ajax[/name] has stuck with me ever since reading it.

I know a lot about mythology and the Trojan War, and I don’t think my household has used [name]Ajax[/name] cleaner in about 15 years, but I still think the connection is pretty darn strong, and thus awkward for a boy growing up in today’s world.

Maybe you’d like another name in the same historical vein?

AUTHORS
[name]Homer[/name]
[name]Virgil[/name]

WARRIORS
[name]Paris[/name] - I really wouldn’t use this!
[name]Achilles[/name] - Again, not sure, but for a different reason…
[name]Hector[/name]

OTHERS
[name]Phoenix[/name] (Tutor of [name]Achilles[/name])
[name]Hermes[/name] (Messenger God)

Or, you could go with good old [name]Troy[/name]! A lot of the names from the story aren’t really usable today, so that is why my list is so small…

My picks: [name]Hector[/name], [name]Homer[/name], and [name]Phoenix[/name]

We still use [name]Ajax[/name] cleaner in my home to clean bathtubs, and that is immediately what I thought of. Personally, I wouldn’t use it. But I wouldn’t say you were terrible parents if you did. But [name]How[/name] would you like it if you were named [name]Ajax[/name]? I don’t think I’d like my name much if I were an [name]Ajax[/name].

Why not just [name]Jax[/name]?

[name]Jack[/name], [name]Jackson[/name] nn [name]Jax[/name], [name]John[/name] nn [name]Jack[/name].
When I think of [name]Ajax[/name], I think of cleanser. [name]Even[/name] though I stopped using it as an adult. It’s too bad that some names are ruined by being a brand name.

I think [name]Axel[/name] would be a great way to get the same feel as [name]Ajax[/name] without setting your child up for teasing. [name]Axel[/name] is a handsome name.

Good suggestion! [name]Axel[/name] is a MUCH better name than [name]Ajax[/name]. Or what about a first name that starts with A and [name]Jax[/name] or [name]Jack[/name] or [name]Jackson[/name] as the middle name? [name]August[/name] [name]Jackson[/name], for instance.

Funny, I was going to suggest [name]Axel[/name] too. I like [name]Axel[/name]!! That being said, the reason I didn’t suggest it is I thought everyone would nix it for sounding too much like a heavy metal band.

My son is called [name_m]Ajax[/name_m]. has no issues with any connotations whatsoever !
Great Choice!!

I personally don’t love it as a standalone name, but as already suggested you could make [name_m]Ajax[/name_m] a nickname combining the first & middle names - eg [name_m]Alexander[/name_m] [name_m]Jackson[/name_m], [name_m]Andrew[/name_m] [name_m]Jackson[/name_m], [name_u]Alfie[/name_u] [name_m]Jackson[/name_m] etc etc

No of course not. It’s a legit name, and it does fit in with the x trend for boys now. I love that it doesn’t end in n like so many boys names used in the 2000s. As for the cleaner reference, tons of names have brand name associations. It’s actually somewhat difficult to find a name that isn’t branded.

I would just use [name_m]Jack[/name_m].

I love it. It’s strong, mythological, and handsome. No, I do not think you’d be terrible for choosing this name for your son.

[name_f]Do[/name_f] I think of the cleaning agent? Yes, but not immediately. My sister, who is twelve year younger than me, doesn’t even know what [name_m]Ajax[/name_m] cleaner is. I think this might be one of those brand associations that only people of certain generations will have. I think the people in their early 30s might be the youngest people who strongly associate that name with cleaner.

P.S. I’m in the US, but I understand [name_m]Ajax[/name_m] is a more popular cleaning agent in Australia and NZ? Personally, I haven’t seen a bottle in years (and yes, I clean the bathroom regularly).
