Are you more of a uncommon name or class name kind of person?

I know one family that uses classic names for their kids: [name_f]Sarah[/name_f] and [name_m]Christopher[/name_m]

Then I know another family who prefers more uncommon names ([name_u]Piper[/name_u] and [name_f]Poppy[/name_f])

Are you more of a classic name or uncommon name kind of person? And why is that?

P.S. Sorry I didn’t know what threat to post this in

Me and my sister are [name_u]River[/name_u] and [name_u]Raven[/name_u], so we’ve both always favored uncommon names - why give your unique kid a name that hundreds of other people have? I think nearly anyone can suit a [name_f]Sarah[/name_f] or [name_m]Christopher[/name_m], but uncommon names have to have a certain sort of person to suit them. Personal opinion, of course, so this means nothing but respect to those who prefer common names.

Uncommon names! There are a few on my list that are classic, but the majority are uncommon. I usually pair the uncommon with the classic in a combo for balance.

I prefer classic names, however, classic doesn’t equal common. You have names like [name_u]James[/name_u], [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f] and [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f], etc. which are very popular but then you also have classic names such as [name_f]Ada[/name_f], [name_f]Mary[/name_f] or [name_f]Jane[/name_f] which aren’t as common nowadays. Looking at my extended list, I have [name_f]Ophelia[/name_f], [name_f]Lavinia[/name_f], [name_f]Cordelia[/name_f], [name_f]Henrietta[/name_f], [name_f]Augusta[/name_f], [name_f]Edith[/name_f], [name_f]Eulalia[/name_f], [name_f]Georgiana[/name_f], etc. on there which for the most part are very uncommon however, I’d still put them in the “classic” category.
What I love about classic names and what I realize every time I watch a period drama is how timeless and ageless they are and how well they fit many different kinds of people yet all of them make the name their own (unless they are very plain people without a personality).
An [name_f]Alice[/name_f] or [name_f]Rose[/name_f] or [name_m]Frederick[/name_m] could have been born now or 150 years ago, they could be 10, 50 or 70 years old, could be a lawyer, baker or musician and the name always fits.
I also think that while having a unique name might make you stand out, if you don’t have the personality to go with it, the name isn’t going to make you anymore of an exciting person, it actually might create expectations that the person is not able to meet.

However, I do think you need to define these categories a little more as something like [name_u]Piper[/name_u] isn’t very uncommon, though it definitely isn’t a classic name.

I have an uncommon name and love it so I am an uncommon names person.

I think I’m a balance between classic and whimsy.

I grew up constantly having to correct peoples’ spelling and pronunciation of my name and found it incredibly annoying - especially since my name ([name_f]Harriet[/name_f]) is pronounced as it’s spelled! And I also have an incredibly rare surname which doesn’t help.

I’m curious though - is [name_f]Poppy[/name_f] rare where you live? It’s incredibly popular in [name_m]Britain[/name_m]!

I have an eclectic taste in names. If I like/love a name, then I like/love it.

I guess it would be more appropriate to call it unique than uncommon then

[name_f]Poppy[/name_f] is an uncommon name here. I didn’t know it was a name until recently

I guess it would be appropriate to call them unique names as opposed to uncommon names

I lean towards more unusual names, but not made up names. I like them to be an actual word or name. Not just two words smashed together like a freight train. I have a name that was rare for when I was young. I still have to correct people. My last names, both maiden and married are also difficult.

I like when it seems like the name holds history. Like a place name, or a word in another language that you have bloodties to. There’s something there. So much is in a name, to an extent you really do become what is spoken over you. Which is why I’m careful on associations and meanings of names, and will be when I choose kiddos names. [name_f]Lucretia[/name_f], I love. I love the name, the way its spoken, but Borgia is still a strong figure (particularly with the tv series that was out). Another aspect is, I also meet many many many many people and I know a lot of names! And again, I don’t like whats popular. [name_m]Just[/name_m] a personal preference.

Last thing, and maybe this is petty, but I have a very dramatic uncommon foreign last name that can hold a ‘heavy’ or ‘pretentious’ name. I feel it’d be a shame to waste it! I’m pretty sure the nameberries would agree as well, its a two-parter like De [name_u]Winter[/name_u]!

I prefer uncommon names. I do like some classics, but I tend to put them in the middle spot, if anything, or if they’re really popular they go on the GP list. I probably wouldn’t use them in real life unless they happen to be uncommon/unpopular too (e.g. [name_f]Jane[/name_f] is below the top 1000 in the UK believe it or not). I don’t think there’s anything wrong with classic names, but as someone with quite an uncommon name for where I live, I absolutely love it. It seems people I know at least, tend to dislike having a popular, classic name, whereas those with more uncommon names really like it (me included). Which is why I’m totally obssessed with popularity lists and dread the top 1000 where I live haha.

Uncommon names if I go by current society standards but names in my signature used to be classic names in the past haha

I’m both a classic and an uncommon name person. I don’t really have much of a style.

I would use different classification than you do as I don’t find [name_u]Piper[/name_u] or [name_f]Poppy[/name_f] particularly unique.

Classic Popular - [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f], [name_f]Emma[/name_f] , [name_f]Ava[/name_f], [name_u]James[/name_u], [name_m]Jacob[/name_m]
Classic Dated - [name_f]Sarah[/name_f] and [name_m]Christopher[/name_m] fit here (along with names like [name_f]Jessica[/name_f], [name_f]Jennifer[/name_f], [name_m]Robert[/name_m] and [name_m]Richard[/name_m])
Classic Timeless - [name_f]Rose[/name_f], [name_f]Julia[/name_f],
Trendy Popular - [name_u]Harper[/name_u], [name_u]Aiden[/name_u], [name_m]Jackson[/name_m]
Trendy Less Popular - [name_u]Piper[/name_u] and [name_f]Poppy[/name_f] fit here along with [name_f]Violet[/name_f], [name_f]Isla[/name_f], [name_u]Theo[/name_u], [name_m]Ezra[/name_m]
[name_u]Unique[/name_u] - [name_u]Juniper[/name_u], [name_u]Eden[/name_u], [name_m]Bodhi[/name_m]
Trendy Made-Up - [name_f]Nevaeh[/name_f], [name_f]Maeby[/name_f]

I like common names that aren’t unisex. The common names appeal more to me, and I like the names that will usually be used on one gender because my name is unisex, and because of that I think its bland.

I have a very uncommon and unique name. I’ve always loved it! I’m sure that has influenced my naming style - nothing common, nothing classic! Constantly spelling or stating it has not bothered me, but it does bother me when I notice that people don’t even try (it’s only two syllables). I find that now more people say my name right on the first try. I suspect that has much to do with people becoming increasingly aware of other cultures.

One exception I must take - giving or having an uncommon name doesn’t necessarily mean you will or even should have zing to your personality. I don’t what image my name projects, but I do know, I could not imagine my name being anything else.

I’m definitely an uncommon name person. There are some popular/common/classic names that I love but I’d never use them, as first names, because of how common they are or how common they’re becoming. For me when a name becomes overused it loses a bit of its magic, so I prefer to use names not in the top 1000s. There are common names that still hold their magic for me (e.g. [name_f]Alice[/name_f], [name_f]Aurora[/name_f], [name_f]Luna[/name_f], [name_f]Willow[/name_f] +many more) but like I said I still wouldn’t use them.

I love uncommon names with the option of a common nn. I think it makes a name so versatile

i.e.
[name_f]Cordelia[/name_f] nn [name_f]Cora[/name_f]
[name_f]Honora[/name_f] nn [name_f]Nora[/name_f]
[name_f]Evelina[/name_f] nn [name_f]Evie[/name_f]
[name_u]Juniper[/name_u] nn [name_u]June[/name_u]

I like both. I [name_u]LOVE[/name_u] popular names like [name_m]Jack[/name_m], [name_m]Caleb[/name_m], [name_m]Samuel[/name_m], [name_m]Joshua[/name_m], [name_f]Isabelle[/name_f], [name_f]Audrey[/name_f], [name_f]Olivia[/name_f], [name_f]Zoe[/name_f], and [name_f]Violet[/name_f], but I also love unusual names like [name_f]Eleni[/name_f], [name_u]Dagny[/name_u], [name_f]Mireya[/name_f], [name_f]Xanthe[/name_f], [name_u]Schuyler[/name_u], [name_m]Henrik[/name_m], [name_m]Casper[/name_m], [name_u]Orion[/name_u], [name_f]Helene[/name_f], and [name_f]Madelief[/name_f].

Why should I have to pick? I think both categories are pretty great.
