Argyle?

Very fussy partner has suggested [name_m]Otis[/name_m]’ brother should be called [name_m]Argyle[/name_m]. We can’t agree on any names. I like softer sounding boys names like [name_u]Arlo[/name_u], [name_u]Ari[/name_u] and [name_u]August[/name_u]. He like harder sounding names like [name_m]Cormac[/name_m] and [name_m]Edgar[/name_m].
[name_f]Do[/name_f] these names go together?
What do you think of [name_m]Argyle[/name_m]?
Would the nickname [name_u]Ari[/name_u] work?
Thanks in advance.

I haven’t heard it used before but as I think about it, it is growing on me. It reminds me of the name Tweed which has a Scottish background and is the name of a river in [name_f]Scotland[/name_f]. I think [name_m]Argyle[/name_m] would be a handsome choice and [name_u]Ari[/name_u] would work well as a nickname!

I agree that [name_u]Ari[/name_u] works well as a nickname and that [name_m]Otis[/name_m] and [name_m]Argyle[/name_m] go well together. I also like the flow of [name_u]Ari[/name_u] and [name_m]Otis[/name_m].

Other harder sounding Scottish names:
[name_m]Lachlan[/name_m]
[name_m]Alec[/name_m]
[name_m]Malcom[/name_m]
[name_m]Clyde[/name_m]
[name_m]Murdock[/name_m]
[name_m]Birk[/name_m]/[name_m]Burke[/name_m]
[name_m]Broderic[/name_m]

To me, argyle is too solidly defined as a word. It gives your son no room to “define” the name in his own right based on his personality.
Suggestions where his nickname could still be [name_u]Ari[/name_u]:
[name_m]Arnold[/name_m]
[name_m]Archer[/name_m]
[name_m]Archibald[/name_m]
[name_m]Arthur[/name_m]
[name_m]Aaron[/name_m]
[name_u]Adair[/name_u]
[name_m]Alaric[/name_m]
[name_m]Archie[/name_m]
[name_m]Alistair[/name_m]
[name_m]Aurelian[/name_m]

I am not a fan of [name_m]Argyle[/name_m] at all, I think it has a very unattractive sound and just makes me think of a sweater…

I quite like [name_m]Otis[/name_m] and [name_m]Argyle[/name_m]! I think it strikes the same chord as [name_m]Otis[/name_m] in being a blend of soft and hard sounds you both like.

I also don’t think that the word association is too strong as to make it unusable. And [name_u]Ari[/name_u] definitely works as a nickname.

I think [name_u]Ari[/name_u] and [name_u]Arlo[/name_u] work as a nickname for [name_m]Argyle[/name_m]. [name_u]Lyle[/name_u] could work, too.

I tend to associate [name_m]Argyle[/name_m] with socks for some reason

I had an affinity for [name_m]Argyle[/name_m] as a name around age 10, so I suppose I’m somewhat prepared for it. I do still think of socks and whatnot, but in today’s naming climate, I don’t see it as unusable. The sound feels current and I would expect [name_m]Otis[/name_m]'s brother to have a somewhat offbeat name, so I think it fits in with the family. [name_m]How[/name_m] well he likes it/pulls it off will depend on his personality. I love [name_u]Ari[/name_u] on a boy and think it totally works as a nn.

I don’t mind [name_m]Argyle[/name_m]. It’s only the gargoyle sound association that stops me from appreciating it fully. The nn [name_u]Ari[/name_u] would def be legit though I’m sure his buddies would start to call him Argy (as in argy bargy), Argy or [name_m]Guy[/name_m]!

I’m starting to like harder consonant names again - st least with one or two in there.

What about:

[name_u]Rory[/name_u]
[name_u]Elliott[/name_u]
[name_m]Casper[/name_m]
[name_m]Beckett[/name_m]
Exton
[name_m]Xander[/name_m]
[name_m]Caspian[/name_m]
Solaris
[name_u]Jude[/name_u]
[name_m]Renzo[/name_m]
[name_m]Walter[/name_m]
[name_m]Colton[/name_m]
[name_m]Langdon[/name_m]
[name_u]Sinclair[/name_u]
[name_m]Winston[/name_m]
[name_u]Perry[/name_u]

All of these are between soft [name_u]Arlo[/name_u] and hard [name_m]Argyle[/name_m]…

I’m afraid that I don’t think [name_m]Argyle[/name_m] works as a name and I don’t think it works with [name_m]Otis[/name_m]. But if you really like [name_m]Argyle[/name_m] then don’t listen to anyone and use it.

While I think [name_m]Argyle[/name_m] (nn [name_u]Ari[/name_u] works) sounds nice with [name_m]Otis[/name_m], I can’t shake the sweater connection.

I makes me think of socks. I think there are lots of great alternatives people have suggested.

Like others all I can think of are socks…I think there are other names that go nicely w/[name_m]Otis[/name_m] & would provide both harder consonant sounds & the nickname of [name_u]Ari[/name_u].

I hear [name_m]Argyle[/name_m], I think socks. Please do not name your child [name_m]Argyle[/name_m].
[name_m]How[/name_m] about [name_m]Giles[/name_m]?
If not, [name_m]Arian[/name_m] would be an interesting way to get [name_u]Ari[/name_u].

[name_u]Ari[/name_u] is a perfectly fine name by itself, and won’t result in him getting sweater jokes til the cows come home.

I like [name_u]Ari[/name_u] by itself with [name_m]Otis[/name_m]!

I actually like it a lot! It does not remind me of socks or sweaters, it reminds me instead of [name_f]Agatha[/name_f] [name_u]Christie[/name_u]'s book Ordeal by Innocence, which imo its a pretty cool association. I love how [name_u]Ari[/name_u] and [name_m]Otis[/name_m] go together, and I think [name_m]Argyle[/name_m] is a pretty strong sounding name with a softer nn.
