Hello! I’m really liking the name [name_u]Ariel[/name_u] [name_f]Rose[/name_f] right now (Pronounced [name_f]Air[/name_f]-ee-el) like The [name_m]Little[/name_m] Mermaid. It kind of came up jokingly between my husband and I when he suggested it by saying “what if we just go with [name_u]Ariel[/name_u] [name_f]Rose[/name_f] and call it good!” Those are the two names that our two older kids had said they liked! We have been having a hard time coming up with a girl name. I am not due until [name_u]January[/name_u] so I know I still have a lot of time! But, I have looked through what seems like every name list, baby name book, website and just can’t seem to find one I love.
I laughed at first but then though about it and realized that I really liked it. My biggest hesitation with it is, will she/we always be getting comments about [name_u]Ariel[/name_u] from the [name_m]Little[/name_m] Mermaid? And is it weird because of that? Also, I was reading that in Spain it is a popular name for boys. I had no idea! I’m guessing that in the US it wouldn’t be as common though? Any thoughts are appreciated!
I like it! The only [name_u]Ariel[/name_u] I know in person is a girl. (I admittedly don’t know if she gets comments about the [name_m]Little[/name_m] Mermaid.)
[name_u]Ariel[/name_u] is a popular Jewish male name. I do think that she may get some mermaid comments. I know an adult female [name_u]Ariel[/name_u].
[name_u]Ariel[/name_u] is a beautiful and totally valid girls name. I doubt you’ll get many [name_m]Little[/name_m] Mermaid comments, and if you do it will be in a sweet way. I know a couple [name_u]Ariel[/name_u]’s. It’s a well established name and quite lovely. In the states it’s primarily a girls name. I mean, technically, my daughters name [name_f]Nova[/name_f] is popular for boys in other countries. shrug no biggie.
I think it depends on how you pronounce the Ar… sound. If you pronounce it [name_f]Air[/name_f]-riel then people will probably associate it with The [name_m]Little[/name_m] Mermaid, but if you pronounce it Are-riel then they may not.
I cant think of a good reason not to use [name_u]Ariel[/name_u]!
There probably will be mermaid comments but that’s not a negative thing.
I wouldn’t worry about it being a male name in other countries/ cultures. It’s the case with plenty of names and unisex is becoming more an more popular.
I think [name_u]Ariel[/name_u] [name_f]Rose[/name_f] is just lovely, and while yes, she may get a couple of ‘The [name_m]Little[/name_m] Mermaid’ comments along her way, it’s not such a bad association to have, and would be just a fleeting thing. I say if you love [name_u]Ariel[/name_u] [name_f]Rose[/name_f], got for it.
[name_u]Ariel[/name_u] is such a pretty, soft name! I definitely think it can be used on a girl (I’ve know people of all genders named [name_u]Ariel[/name_u]!)
I think there might be some [name_m]Little[/name_m] Mermaid comments, but probably not too many. My niece is named [name_f]Aurora[/name_f], and Sleeping Beauty sometimes gets referenced. It’s not a bad association, though, and neither is [name_u]Ariel[/name_u] (imo). So I personally wouldnt mind a few comments here or there. You should use the name that you love.
[name_u]Ariel[/name_u] [name_f]Rose[/name_f] is lovely! I think it is a strong name that will serve your daughter well and that fact that the siblings had input is a really special connection for your children to have. It sounds like you have found the perfect name.
I love love love [name_u]Ariel[/name_u] [name_f]Rose[/name_f]!! Such a sweet name! It’s quite common in [name_m]Israel[/name_m] for boys, but I wouldn’t worry about it because it’s far more popular for girls in English speaking countries.
I think she’ll definitely get some [name_m]Little[/name_m] Mermaid comments, but it’s not like it’s a bad association. My name is [name_f]Emily[/name_f] [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] which is the name of [name_m]Clifford[/name_m] the Big [name_u]Red[/name_u] Dog’s owner, and I used to get that reference all the time growing up - never bothered me at all.
If I read “[name_u]Ariel[/name_u]” on a school roster I’d definitely assume it’s a girl and would marvel at how cute the name is!!
