Arion? Murdoch?

Hey Berries! Sit tight. I have multiple questions on this one! LOL!

Okay, so… honour names. Hubs and I love the idea of honour names, but we don’t actually like the names themselves. As such, I was taking some creative licence and coming up with ideas. I love the idea of using alternate names because it feels more connected to me, rather than it just sitting there like a “filler family name”. Thinking about it and creating something new makes it feel more special to me.

Also, and I feel like the is an odd thing, but it’s been on my mind a lot… both fathers are decidedly upty (if that’s the word). They can both have a air off pride and “I told you so” about them… so I actually don’t really want to use their actual names, because I don’t want to end up with a family war (or more of one) because of whose name got used first (of we have a boy(s), etc). I know that probably sounds dumb, but I can just see them getting all snobby about it and I’d rather not deal with that. We have enough in-law drama as is.

Anyway… names!

Contender 1 … Arion - honouring [name_m]Philip[/name_m]
[name_m]Reason[/name_m]: Greek (family heritage), gorgeous, horse-related, less stuffy/old/overused (…and sits wonderfully next to [name_m]Atlas[/name_m]!)
Questions:

  • Arion or Areion?? (latter helps pronunciation, but does that E just look extra??)
  • Am I being too creative, and it’s not as connected as I think it is??
  • Too close to [name_u]Orion[/name_u]?? (even though it is totally different in my opinion)

Contender 2 … Murdoch - honouring [name_u]Murray[/name_u]
[name_m]Reason[/name_m]: Scottish (family heritage), same meaning, more interesting, less meh, more funky NN options…
Questions:

  • Actually usable?? Too last-namey?? Too harsh sounding??
  • Murdoch? Murdoc? [name_m]Murdock[/name_m]? Murdach? Speeellling???

Another option all together!!

  • Arion as a creative honour for both?? … because it’s a horse ([name_m]Philip[/name_m]) created by [name_m]Poseidon[/name_m] (sea, ocean… [name_u]Murray[/name_u])?? (then they can’t one up each other and share!)

Sooo… no idea if any of that made sense, but I am keen for your imput anyway haha! All ideas welcome! Combination inspiration is always great!

Trying to revamp some boys names that have been sitting too long, and kind of got slapped together without that extra sparkle…

xox

I like Arion. It’s cool and I think it definitely could work as an honour just for [name_m]Philip[/name_m]. The link is fairly strong, and I don’t think it’s too close to [name_u]Orion[/name_u]. As a joint honour I think that they could still compete over it though, as it definitely feels more like an honour for [name_m]Philip[/name_m] with [name_u]Murray[/name_u] tagged on the end.
I don’t like Murdoch, sorry. It makes me think of [name_m]Rupert[/name_m] Murdoch who is really corrupt, and I do think it’s a little harsh/close to ‘murder’ for my liking.

Other ideas:
[name_m]Marshall[/name_m] - Begins with the same letter as [name_u]Murray[/name_u]/has a similar feel but it’s meaning is about horses.
Your maiden name/dad’s surname - that way the child has both family surnames. That’s what I’m doing with [name_m]Lucas[/name_m] [name_u]Avery[/name_u]. It honours my dad because [name_u]Avery[/name_u] is his surname, and it honours my SO’s dad that all the children will have his family surname.

Not easy names to jointly honour!

I think Arion is a little close to [name_m]Aryan[/name_m] for comfort. Murdoch is usable as a middle I think.

I agree that Arion is too close to [name_m]Aryan[/name_m]. If you really like it, go with the Areion spelling.

My hubby bought this up too… it’s so weird I didn’t think of it. But it doesn’t bother either of us, as the actual meaning of the term is “noble”. Yeah, I think we agreed that we prefer the E spelling.

Yeah, the more I think about it, the more I agree with you. Areion is great for [name_m]Philip[/name_m] alone.

I don’t know about [name_m]Rupert[/name_m] Murdoch, but thank you for mentioning the negative connotations. The more I mull over it the less I like the name. Bit harsh, and clunky.

That’s not a bad idea… only my maiden name (and my Dad’s surname) is hyphenated, so a bit too complex! Part of it is [name_m]McLeod[/name_m], which is also my paternal grandfather’s middle name, so that could work in the right combination perhaps…

Thanks for the ideas!

Arion is too similar to [name_m]Aryan[/name_m], which has a very negative history. Other names with horse meanings: Ashwin, [name_u]Rohan[/name_u], Tamaz, Tamazi, [name_f]Eowyn[/name_f], Epona, [name_m]Marshall[/name_m], [name_f]Rosalind[/name_f], and [name_f]Rosamund[/name_f].
