I am back for yet another comprehensive list of names pertaining to a particular topic. For the fourth segment in my series, we will be exploring Around the World.

Please note that I will be leaving out popular names, or at least names that are well-known on the forums, such as Paris or London. I am going to keep the format simple and not go deep into detail. For now, here’s a look at some of the names I’ve gathered:


  • Acadia - U - a historical region in Canada
    Acadia was once a French colony in northeastern North America, now mostly part of Canada’s Maritime provinces.
  • Adelaide - F - noble
    Originating from Old German, the name is associated with the Germanic word “adal” meaning noble and “heid” meaning kind or sort.
  • Aegean - M - Aegean Sea
    The Aegean Sea is located between Greece and Turkey and is named after King Aegeus of Greek mythology.
  • Aiaia - F - the mythical island of Circe
    Aiaia is a fictional place in Greek mythology, known as the home of the enchantress Circe.
  • Alalia - F - ancient Greek city on the island of Corsica
    Alalia was an ancient Greek colony known for its naval power and eventual destruction by the Carthaginians and Etruscans in the 6th century BCE. Its original Greek spelling was Alali, thought the modern Corsican form is Aléria.
  • Alaska - F - great land
    From the Aleut word “aláxsxaq,” meaning “great land,” it refers to the U.S. state known for its vast wilderness.
  • Alberta - F - noble, bright
    Named after Princess Louise Caroline Alberta, daughter of Queen Victoria, it is a province in Canada.
  • Alexandria - F - defender of the people
    Of Greek origin, Alexandria comes from “Alexandros,” meaning “protector of the people.” It’s a city in Egypt founded by Alexander the Great.
  • Alyzia - F - ancient city in Greece
    The ancient city of Alyzia (or Alyzeia) was one of the most important in ancient Acarnania. The city was said to have named after Alyzeus, a brother of Odysseus‘ wife Penelope.
  • Amalfi - F - a coastal town in Italy
    Amalfi is a beautiful town on Italy’s Amalfi Coast, known for its cliffs, Mediterranean beauty, and historical significance.
  • Antarctica - F - opposite to the Arctic
    Derived from the Greek “antarktikos,” meaning “opposite to the north,” it refers to the continent at the southernmost point of the Earth. Ed Sheeran named his daughter Lyra Antarctica.
  • Aruba - F - “well-placed” or “island of the rolling hills”
    Aruba is a Caribbean island off the coast of Venezuela, famous for its white sandy beaches and tourism.
  • Aspen - U - a type of tree
    Aspen is both a name for a type of tree found in the northern hemisphere and a famous ski resort town in Colorado.
  • Athens - U - goddess of wisdom
    From Greek mythology, Athena is the goddess of wisdom, courage, and warfare, and the city of Athens is named after her.
  • Atlantis - U - mythical lost city
    A mythical island nation mentioned by Plato, Atlantis was said to have sunk into the ocean due to a catastrophe.
  • Auxerre - U - city in France
    Auxerre is a historic town in Burgundy, France, known for its medieval architecture and wine production.
  • Bardou - U - unknown origin
    Bardou may refer to a surname with uncertain roots, potentially from French or Occitan origins.
  • Bronx - M- to sulk
    The Bronx is one of New York City’s five boroughs, named after Swedish settler Jonas Bronck.
  • Cairo - M - victorious
    Cairo is the capital of Egypt, and its name is derived from the Arabic “al-Qāhirah,” meaning “the victorious.”
  • Capri - U - a beautiful island
    Capri is a glamorous island in Italy’s Bay of Naples, known for its rugged landscape and luxury tourism.
  • Caspian - M - from the Caspian Sea
    Named after the Caspian Sea, the world’s largest inland body of water, bordered by five countries in Asia and Europe.
  • Cervino - M - Italian name for the Matterhorn
    Cervino is the Italian name for the Matterhorn, a famous mountain on the border between Switzerland and Italy.
  • Chicago - U/F - wild onion
    Derived from the Algonquin word “shikaakwa,” meaning wild onion or garlic, it refers to the city in Illinois. Kim Kardashian’s daughter is named Chicago West.
  • Clovelly - F - village in Devon, England
    Clovelly is a picturesque village on the north coast of Devon, England, known for its cobbled streets and dramatic cliffs.
  • Corsica - F - island in the Mediterranean
    Corsica is an island in the Mediterranean Sea, part of France, and is known for its rugged terrain and historic culture.
  • Cyprus - M - island in the eastern Mediterranean
    Cyprus is an island country in the eastern Mediterranean, known for its historical significance and beautiful landscapes.
  • Danube - U - second-longest river in Europe
    The Danube River flows through Central and Eastern Europe, passing through ten countries, from Germany to the Black Sea.
  • Dover - U - a port town in England
    Dover is a town in southeastern England, famous for the White Cliffs of Dover and its port connecting to France.
  • Dublin - M - black pool
    The name Dublin is derived from the Irish word “Dubh Linn,” meaning “black pool,” referring to a dark tidal pool at the meeting of the River Liffey.
  • Edessa - F - ancient city in modern-day Syria, now known as Urfa
    Edessa was an important city in Mesopotamia, known for its strategic location and its role as a center of early Christianity.
  • Egypt - M - country in southeastern Africa
    The name “Egypt” is derived from the Greek word Aigyptos, which was the Greek form of the Egyptian name Hwt-Ka-Ptah, meaning “home of the soul of Ptah,” referring to the ancient city of Memphis.
  • Elaia - F - ancient Greek city in Epirus
    Elaia was a town in the region of Epirus, Greece, known for its proximity to important trade routes and its role in local politics.
  • Euston - M - heart or settlement of a person called Efe
    Euston is a major railway station in London, England, named after the district where it’s located.
  • Fife - U - a council area in Scotland
    Fife is a council area in Scotland, historically known for its mining and maritime heritage.
  • Flores - U - flower
    Derived from the Latin “flos,” meaning flower, Flores is also the name of an island in Indonesia.
  • Gwenonwy - F - Welsh place
    Gwenonwy is a Welsh name meaning lily of the valley, and is the name of an island settlement in Wales, the Maen Gwenonwy.
  • HjĂ€lmaren - U - lake in Sweden
    HjÀlmaren is the fourth largest lake in Sweden, known for its scenic beauty and historical significance. Also spelt JÀlmaren.
  • India - F - Indus River
    India is a country in South Asia, the second-most populous country in the world, and rich in diverse cultures, languages, and history. Chris Hemsworth & Elsa Pataky have a daughter named India Rose.
  • Ithaca - F - a Greek island
    Ithaca is a Greek island in the Ionian Sea, famously associated with Homer’s epic, the Odyssey, as the home of Odysseus.
  • Joliet - F - a city in Illinois, USA
    Joliet is a city located in the state of Illinois, USA, known for its historic downtown and significant role in rail transportation.
  • Jordan - M - a river and country
    The Jordan River flows through the Middle East, and Jordan is a country in the Middle East, named after the river.
  • Juneau - U - capital of Alaska
    Juneau is the capital of the U.S. state of Alaska, located in the southeastern part of the state.
  • Kea - F - a mountain in Hawaii
