On a previous post, I said I liked [name]Arrietty[/name] (ah-ree-et-ee) as a nickname for [name]Harriet[/name], but, I’ve been told by a few that it could work as a stand alone name. Being a massive fan of The Borrowers, this name is one I’m seriously considering if I have a little girl one day, but which would work best? [name]Harriet[/name] or [name]Arrietty[/name]?
I [name]LOVE[/name] [name]Harriet[/name]!! Its my most recent Name Crush (for a middle name).
[name]Arrietty[/name] sounds much more current to me. [name]Harriet[/name] has always been too ‘old’ for my taste.
[name]Arrietty[/name] I’ve always liked it. I don’t know if I could live with it being a made up name though
I love [name]Arrietty[/name]! It’s useable as a name on it’s own. It’s the name of a character in [name]Mary[/name] [name]Norton[/name]'s 1952 novel ‘The Borrowers’, and a character in Hayao Miyazaki’s animated movie ‘The [name]Secret[/name] World of [name]Arrietty[/name]’ based off of [name]Mary[/name] [name]Norton[/name]'s novel. [name]Harriet[/name] makes me think of an old, cranky grandma, so I’ve never been fond of it.
I love it, but that’s what I’m worried about It’s definitely cute though
[name]Arrietty[/name] is so cute! This is coming from someone who hasn’t seen The Borrowers, so I can be objective I think. I don’t think it is really bad that it is “made up” - all names come from some place, ya know? Personally I find it very fun and precious. [name]Harriet[/name] is nice, too, and I think it could come back soon. But I’m not liking the “[name]Harry[/name]” sound. If you balance [name]Arrietty[/name] out with a sleek, one-syllable name for the middle, I think it would totally work.
[name]Arrietty[/name]'s beautiful! I think a little [name]Arrietty[/name] would be really unexpected and perfectly fine. I personally would hate to hide [name]Arrietty[/name] behind [name]Harriet[/name] as just a nickname. I have never liked [name]Harriet[/name]. It just sounds ugly to me, feels really mature, and makes me think of an old woman. It’s not my style.
I prefer [name]Harriet[/name]. You can call her lots of cute nicknames like [name]Etta[/name]. [name]Arrietty[/name] sounds like a mouth full to me.
I would go with [name]Harriet[/name] as a given name and then call her Arriety. [name]Arrietty[/name] just doesnt’ seem like it would grow well.
[name]Arrietty[/name]! I’m such a Ghibli nut that I would never consider [name]Harriet[/name].
I’ve put [name]Arietta[/name] on my list instead to sort of get round it as it’s only one sound off [name]Arrietty[/name] and is a legit name.
I love [name]Harriet[/name], it’s in my top 5 at the moment. I don’t think it’s like an old lady name at all. It’s classic, and it’s beautiful. It’s making a comeback but is still pretty uncommon. And there are loads of cute nicknames you could use - [name]Hattie[/name], [name]Harrie[/name], [name]Etta[/name]… To me [name]Arrietty[/name] seems like it would be hard to pronounce. I know a girl called [name]Beibhinn[/name] (Irish name) and she’s constantly telling people how to pronounce/spell it. It drives her mad! As the poster said above, you could use [name]Arrietty[/name] as a nickname for [name]Harriet[/name] too.
I do personaly prefer [name]Arrietty[/name] over [name]Harriet[/name], but looking at the other names in your signature, [name]Harriet[/name] seems to better fit your overall style. Plus, with [name]Harriet[/name], she can choose from several nicknames, including [name]Arrietty[/name]. I’d go with [name]Harriet[/name], nn Arriety.
I would probably go with [name]Harriet[/name] nn Arriety.
I agree with pp that it might not age as well as one thinks and I think [name]Harriet[/name] is a more flexible fit for someones personality.
A huge tom-boy might prefer to be [name]Harry[/name] or [name]Hattie[/name] to the more feminine Arriety - I mention this because while I go by [name]Lexie[/name] now, as a kid anything but [name]Alex[/name] just didn’t work for me. Names with many flexible nn options always seems more preferable to me.
This was my thoughts exactly. For me the biggest reason I don’t like made-up names is because they don’t have any history to them, but if it was made-up and used in a big as familiar and popular as the borrowers the name has history of usage and to me that’s all that you need. And I could see [name]Arrietty[/name] on a woman of any age.
