Artemis: Boy or Girl?

The title explains it really is [name_u]Artemis[/name_u] better on a boy or a girl. I know it is the name of the goddess of hunting but as [name_u]Artemis[/name_u] Fowl says its the [name_f]Goddess[/name_f] of hunting so it could go either way (not the exact words as I read it two years ago but something along those lines).
For a girl I would use the nickname [name_f]Maisie[/name_f] maybe or a boy would just be [name_u]Artemis[/name_u].

Girl. [name_m]Even[/name_m] despite the [name_u]Artemis[/name_u] Fowl character, I don’t think you can ignore the fact that the original namesake is a goddess, not a god. I think it should stay with the ladies. [name_f]Maisie[/name_f] is an adorable nickname by the way.

Girl Girl Girl!

Girl because of the goddess.

The only reason I see it as unisex is I first heard the name in [name_u]Artemis[/name_u] Fowl and of course he is a boy.

Girl, definitely.

This is one i think works on either gender. I prefer it on girls. But it could work on a boy. For a boy, I’d prefer the [name_m]Artemus[/name_m]/[name_m]Artemas[/name_m] spelling i think

I’ve heard it for both, but I’ve only met one in real life - a girl.

Gender depends on the spelling of the name.

[name_u]Artemis[/name_u] = girl
[name_m]Artemas[/name_m]/[name_m]Artemus[/name_m] = boy

I vote girl name!

Giiiiiirrll! I hate it on boys. I really adore [name_u]Artemis[/name_u] (the goddess), so I just can’t accept a boy [name_u]Artemis[/name_u].

[name_u]Artemis[/name_u] nn Maise on a girl → adorable!
[name_m]Artemus[/name_m] nn [name_m]Artie[/name_m] on a boy → fantastic!

It’s one of the new unisex names that I would actually love to see!

[name_u]Artemis[/name_u] is a feminine name.

I [name_f]LOVE[/name_f] [name_u]Artemis[/name_u] on a girl. Honestly I can’t see the appeal on a boy. I prefer [name_m]Artemus[/name_m] on a boy.

[name_u]Artemis[/name_u] is all girl to me. The goddess in Greek mythology was a WOMAN (hence being a goddess). If someone puts it on a boy, they a) are stupid; b) don’t know (or care) about the origin of the name; or c) purposely trying to torture their poor baby boy.

[name_u]Artemis[/name_u] is girl to me. The goddess trumps modern literature by a lot for me.

[name_m]Even[/name_m] though it’s the name of a goddess, it’s always had a masculine sound to me. Maybe thats because the male cat on [name_u]Sailor[/name_u] [name_f]Moon[/name_f] is called [name_u]Artemis[/name_u](and that is where I first heard it). Anyway, [name_u]Artemis[/name_u] has never even charted in the top 1,000 for girls (at least in the US). He will likely never meet another [name_u]Artemis[/name_u] male or female. If the girl’s aren’t using it, why can’t a boy?

I imagine it on a girl

It does have a wee bit of a masculine sound to my ears, though I’d follow the rules and spell it [name_m]Artemus[/name_m] for a boy. It’s very cool on a girl, and certain women could wear it perfectly well as a FN. I could not, though. For that reason, I’d only use it as a middle.

I’m going against the majority and side with the non name nerd side and say boy.
I first heard it on [name_u]Artemis[/name_u] Fowl, which I read as soon as all the books came out, and though within the first few pages he does reference the fact that his parents named him after a female goddess, he is the one I made the first association with.
I agree that I would spell it with the a/u to replace the i.
