Both are great names but I prefer [name_u]Arthur[/name_u] – have always had a soft spot for this name, and it sounds so warm and friendly to me, and also strong and classic. Always thought it was underused. [name_u]Love[/name_u] nickname [name_m]Art[/name_m]. [name_m]Hugo[/name_m] is fun and charming, if a bit trendier sounding. The [name_m]Chavez[/name_m] association does come to mind as a negative for me, but would probably be shed quickly if I knew any kids named [name_m]Hugo[/name_m] in real life!
I also prefer the sound of [name_u]Arthur[/name_u] but that’s very subjective.
Thank you all! These comments are really helpful. It’s really useful for us to know how the name [name_m]Hugo[/name_m] would be received in [name_u]North[/name_u] [name_u]America[/name_u]. To us it is such a quintessentially [name_f]English[/name_f] name (the only Hugos we knew growing up in [name_u]England[/name_u] were very [name_f]English[/name_f] indeed! ) whereas it seems that it might be read a little differently across the pond. Expat dilemmas!
I wonder what names feel particularly English/British to those in [name_u]North[/name_u] [name_u]America[/name_u]?
I prefer [name_m]Hugo[/name_m], which feels sunny, friendly, energetic, and cool with the o ending. [name_f]My[/name_f] first association with [name_u]Arthur[/name_u] is the aardvark, but I don’t think that’s a negative association – [name_u]Arthur[/name_u] feels strong and warm.
I’ve met one [name_m]Hugo[/name_m] (teenage) and no Arthurs
I prefer [name_u]Arthur[/name_u].
A classic, distinguished sounding, yet warm and approachable. [name_m]Art[/name_m] and [name_u]Artie[/name_u] great nicknames. Like using full name as well.
I prefer [name_u]Arthur[/name_u], and not just because of the family connections to the name. I could never understand the love people have for [name_m]Hugo[/name_m], but that’s just me.
[name_m]Born[/name_m] and raised in the western United States.
I personally prefer [name_m]Hugo[/name_m]. I think I’m a sucker for boy names that end in O: [name_m]Angelo[/name_m], [name_u]Nico[/name_u], Hugo… They’re all kind of handsome and cool.
There’s nothing wrong with [name_u]Arthur[/name_u]. It seems a little older, more scholarly. I think in [name_u]England[/name_u], most people wouldn’t pronounce the R’s in [name_u]Arthur[/name_u], and I think I like it better that way. Here it would definitely be aRthuR.
I think it’s good to see how people’s perception of a name will never be totally unanimous. Ultimately, you go with what you love.
[name_u]Arthur[/name_u] [name_m]Hugo[/name_m] has a nice ring to it!
I’m in the US and I LOVE [name_m]Hugo[/name_m]! It seems so peppy and down to earth. While [name_u]Arthur[/name_u] is very classic, it seems a little stuffy for my tastes.
This is so true! It’s been wonderful to get all of these opinions, and actually very helpful to hear how the names might be perceived differently in the US vs UK, but I would say I have a fairly straight 50-50 split in favour of each choice! It’s reassuring to know that both names are equally loved and appreciated—even if it doesn’t help my own decision process😅
I really love both! I would probably go for both, but if I really had to choose, then [name_u]Arthur[/name_u]. Sounds handsome and successful. I also happen to know an [name_u]Arthur[/name_u] who looks like a model (he has been invited a few times), but who is becoming a surgeon. Very kind, gallant, sweet and charismatic person (dates my little sister ).
[name_m]Hugo[/name_m] is my favourite boys name but I also love [name_u]Arthur[/name_u]. I think [name_m]Hugo[/name_m] feels fresher and [name_u]Arthur[/name_u] is more classic/timeless.
[name_u]Arthur[/name_u] [name_m]Hugo[/name_m] would be a lovely combo if you fancied joining the two. But overall I would opt for [name_m]Hugo[/name_m] as a first.
Canadian here! I love love love both names so much… my nephew’s name is [name_m]Hugo[/name_m] [name_u]Arthur[/name_u]! He’s one of the three child Hugos I’ve met, so I think it’s definitely good here. Both awesome picks, but I think [name_u]Arthur[/name_u] wins for me today!
