Asher

I feel like [name_m]Asher[/name_m] is getting REALLY popular. But I absolutely love it. 1. It’s a biblical (Old Testament) name and 2. My favorite book has a character named [name_m]Asher[/name_m]. Is it too popular? And what names are similar to it? Thanks!!

I love [name_m]Asher[/name_m], as you can see from my signature. I have never met an [name_m]Asher[/name_m]. [name_m]Asher[/name_m] is handsome, has a great meaning, is biblical. Names that are close - [name_u]Ash[/name_u], [name_u]Ashton[/name_u], [name_u]Ashley[/name_u], and [name_m]Archer[/name_m].

Hey, our [name_m]Asher[/name_m] is coming mid Dec.! We love it, and we don’t want to share it, so there…

I think you have to choose a name that you love, and realize that others might, too. It doesn’t bother us at all that there are other [name_m]Asher[/name_m]'s out there, maybe b/c there’s only one [name_m]Asher[/name_m] out there that really matters to us.

I’ve not come across one yet. It really depends on where you live, I think. [name_u]Read[/name_u] the birth announcements in your local paper or go check if they’re posted on a nearby hospital’s website. That will tell you how popular it is where you are, if it even is at all.

I love [name_m]Asher[/name_m]! But don’t worry…it doesn’t work with our last name, so there’s one less [name_m]Asher[/name_m] out there.

Popularity is subjective. Some might consider anything in the top 100 popular. Some might even consider ANYTHING in the top 1000 popular (case and point, me).

Therefore, for me I feel it too popular.

But it is a strong name and popularity is the only thing keeping me from it.

I say go for it.

Congrats! I’m sure your little boy will be very blessed  (I recently read that in the Old Testament [name_m]Jacob[/name_m]'s son [name_m]Asher[/name_m] was blessed with happiness!)

@papbear Congrats! I’m sure your little boy will be very blessed  (I recently read that in the Old Testament [name_m]Jacob[/name_m]'s son [name_m]Asher[/name_m] was blessed with happiness!)

[name_m]Asher[/name_m] just missed the top 100 (ranked 108). When the next list is released in [name_f]May[/name_f] 2014, it might even be in the top 100. That, for me, constitutes a popular name. All that aside, it has a beautiful sound and meaning, and if you love it, use it! I think it is a name that will age well with the child as he grows.

The popularity of a name can vary a lot from one region to another. You might want to take a look at the name rankings for your State to see how popular [name_m]Asher[/name_m] is where you live. This link http://www.ssa.gov/OACT/babynames/limits.html is to the background information available from the U.S. Social Security department (that releases the top 1000 names in the U.S. each year.) Select the file for “state specific data” and you will be able to see how many babies received the name [name_m]Asher[/name_m] in your State in 2012. You may be surprised by what you find out when you look at the number of babies actually given the name in your State. For example, where I live [name_m]Asher[/name_m] is ranked #148 which at first strikes me as a “popular” name, but there were only 39 babies in the whole State given that name and we have 64 counties. So theoretically, there may not have been an [name_m]Asher[/name_m] born in my whole county. Now obviously the popularity of the name could be less dispersed that an even division across the counties within a State but it still seems relatively safe to predict that a little [name_m]Asher[/name_m] born here would not have to worry about sharing his name with another classmate and probably not even run into another child with his name at the same school. However, if [name_m]Asher[/name_m] feels too popular to you it may well be that the name is more popular where you live so either way it might be worth taking a look at the name data for your State. Best wishes on your name search and Congratulations on your baby boy.
