Be honest… Is this name too girly for a boy? I love the sound of it and think it goes great with older brother [name]Rowen[/name] (which I know is a unisex name now!), but worry it might be just a tad too feminine. I suppose since I never got the girl I always wanted, I tend to lean towards softer sounding, less “manly” names for my boys! Haha
If too girly, anyone have any suggestions? Another name on my list is [name]Callan[/name] but I’m not a fan of the nn “[name]Cal[/name]”.
It also reminds me of Aslan from the C S [name]Lewis[/name] books, would you care for that? Otherwise I agree with PP, go with [name]Asher[/name] or [name]Ashton[/name] for a boy.
There are plenty of other unisex/softer sounding male names to choose from, I think [name]Rowen[/name] and [name]Finley[/name] would be great
I really like [name]Ashlan[/name] esp with older brother [name]Rowan[/name]. I know it sounds similar to [name]Ashley[/name] and the nameberry sight says “When a name has been on the girls’ most-popular list for decades, it’s no longer a viable option for a boy. Try [name]Asher[/name] instead.” but I have no problem using a name for it’s original gender regardless if it’s “gone to the girls”. I actually would prefer [name]Ashlan[/name] on a boy than on a girl. For a girl it feels too much like you wanted to name your daughter [name]Ashley[/name] but then wanted it to be different where for a boy. I don’t think you’d have to go for [name]Asher[/name] (which I like) or [name]Ashton[/name] (which I don’t) or [name]Ash[/name]. you can still use nn [name]Asher[/name] or [name]Ash[/name] if it suits better.
Another thought: [name]Ashlan[/name] is that it feels like a mixture between [name]Asher[/name]/ton and Aslan (Which you might recognize from C.S.[name]Lewis[/name] and means “lion” in Turkish).
I am not a fan of [name]Ash[/name] names for boys. I find them all too feminine, whether it be [name]Ashley[/name], [name]Ashton[/name], [name]Asher[/name] or [name]Ashlan[/name]. That is my opinion. I like manly names on boys in general though. There are only a few softer names that I like ([name]Seth[/name] and [name]Finley[/name]).
If you really like the [name]Ash[/name] sound then I agree with p.p. and go with [name]Ashton[/name] or [name]Asher[/name].
Well since [name]Ashley[/name] is my #2 fave boy name, no it’s not too feminine. However it feels incomplete to me. I’d prefer Ashland. Also like Aslan but I’m always weary of “As” names
I agree that [name]Ashlan[/name] is too feminine sounding for a boy and that [name]Asher[/name] or [name]Ashton[/name] are better choices. It does remind me of Aslan in the [name]Narnia[/name] books too. While I don’t mind that name, I’m not sure that I’d give it to a child.
I do like [name]Asher[/name] but its becoming pretty popular. [name]Love[/name] [name]Narnia[/name], so I definitely agree with the Aslan reference but not a fan of the “as” sound at the beginning-I think “ash” sounds better. Low [name]Ashton[/name] in theory but can’t get away from the Kutcher association
I think that [name]Ash[/name]- names can certainly still be masculine ([name]Ashton[/name] Kutcher has done wonders for team blue there), but the -lan ending is soooooo close to -lyn tha I think it’s the death knell for that name.
Aslan itself is a reasonably common name. If memory serves me it’s not Turkish but rather Azerbaijani, and it does mean “lion.” However, in the [name]West[/name] the [name]Narnia[/name] association will certainly trump.
I actually quite like [name]Ash[/name] itself as a male name. The first association is with the lovely tree, but the Pokemon (male) kid will help too. Also–
I would go with [name]Asher[/name] instead. [name]Ashlan[/name] is really uncommon and given that most [name]Ash[/name]- names are female, I think most people would assume it was a girl’s name.
[name]Ashlan[/name] seems to be a combo of two names
Aslan, a male name which is used in the [name]Narnia[/name] books, but has been a traditional name in the Caucasus region ([name]Georgia[/name], Azerbaijan) for centuries; and
[name]Aislinn[/name], pronounced [name]Ash[/name]-lynn, which is a traditional Irish name for girls.
I think [name]Ashlan[/name] will be assumed to be a girl.
