Association aside

Not necessarily a bad one but [name_m]Cohen[/name_m]? What do you think of it? Sound? Flow? Siblings? Middle names?

I can’t think it without the association… anyway I’ll try to pretend like this is a totally different name with a totally different history. Because if I don’t, I just can’t comment positively.

It’s nice, fits in today’s trends well. Has a nice sound. Reminds me of [name_u]Callahan[/name_u] which I like. [name_m]Cohen[/name_m] [name_m]Alexander[/name_m]?

I can understand liking the way this name sounds (it is a great sound), and if that is the rational behind using the name [name_m]Cohen[/name_m], I’d strongly suggest [name_m]Coen[/name_m] or [name_m]Koen[/name_m] or [name_u]Rowen[/name_u]/Rowan or [name_u]Owen[/name_u]. These names obviously don’t share the same meaning and etymology and for those reasons they sidestep the issues with using [name_m]Cohen[/name_m] as anything but a last name. I’d love to meet a child named:

Coen [name_m]Graham[/name_m]
[name_m]Koen[/name_m] [name_m]Matthias[/name_m]
[name_u]Rowen[/name_u] [name_m]Gregory[/name_m]
[name_u]Rowan[/name_u] [name_m]Hugh[/name_m]
[name_u]Owen[/name_u] [name_m]Alexander[/name_m]

I agree with @ethelmary in that it is not possible for me to disregard the association. I do think there are names where the associations people have with names should not be a deterrent. Examples of that might include a name of a public person or artist or character that is not a positive association. If, for example, you really wanted to name a child [name_f]Karen[/name_f], then the current associations with [name_f]Karen[/name_f] are something to consider but ultimately you could decide [name_f]Karen[/name_f] is very much a wearable name and one that you want to use. I have friends considering using a name [name_m]Gibson[/name_m] and they have worried that everyone will think that they somehow like [name_u]Mel[/name_u] [name_m]Gibson[/name_m]. They are referencing the guitar and a family name, not [name_u]Mel[/name_u].

The key difference here is that [name_f]Karen[/name_f] is a current slang term and [name_u]Mel[/name_u] [name_m]Gibson[/name_m] won’t be famous forever. [name_m]Cohen[/name_m] is very different in that it has deep religious significance and for that reason I would not be comfortable using this name. I don’t believe anyone of the Jewish faith would use this as a first name and it seems highly problematic that anyone outside of that faith would use this name.

Honestly I don’t care for it as a first name even ignoring its unsuitability as a first name.

Sound wise, I do like it. It fits in with names like [name_u]Rowan[/name_u] and [name_u]Bodhi[/name_u]. But tbh, I can’t quite shake the association.

Cohen would probably go with just about any other boys names as it’s a straightforward sound.
[name_m]Cohen[/name_m] [name_u]James[/name_u]
[name_m]Cohen[/name_m] [name_m]Nicholas[/name_m]
[name_m]Cohen[/name_m] [name_m]Henry[/name_m]

I think it’s a beautiful name! It would totally be on my list if it weren’t for the association!

I prefer [name_u]Rowan[/name_u] or [name_u]Owen[/name_u], honestly.

If you’re genuinely considering this, there are a few threads on here that you really need to have a look at. It’s not an appropriate first name to use because it will be offensive to some.

If the association is worrying you. Names I thought of are
[name_u]Cody[/name_u]
[name_u]Owen[/name_u]
[name_m]Odin[/name_m]
There is probably a bunch more. [name_u]Or[/name_u] perhaps you may prefer to use it as a middle. :slightly_smiling_face:

Oh, no, I am not considering this, I know very well of the association, I am just asking your opinion on the name if you put the association aside and whether you like the sound of it or not.

Ah ok. [name_m]Just[/name_m] wanted to check!

Even association aside— which I’m finding it very hard to look past, honestly— I’m not a fan of this one. I know this has been echoed by others, but I don’t feel like I can talk about this name without bringing it up.

Taking it purely by sound? I’m still not a fan of this or most -owen names, like Bowen or Owen (or the Berry-loved Elowen for that matter). I do understand why people like them, they’re just not for me.

I do love Rowan, Ewan, and Conan and think all (or Bowen, Owen) would be good alternatives.

Associations aside, I think [name_m]Cohen[/name_m] has a great sound. It’s a fresh spin on [name_u]Owen[/name_u], and I feel like it sounds more mature and would age better. It has the same gentle sound, but seems stronger. It also looks very appealing; something about the internal “h” is rather attractive.

I’m probably the one person who doesn’t have a clue what the associations are, sorry. I think I have an idea of what it is, but I’m not certain.

I think it fits in with todays trends. [name_m]Don[/name_m]’t really have an opinion on it so can’t say much. Sounds nice, I suppose.
