Astoria?

[name_m]How[/name_m] would you pronounce this? Any background information or good meaning on this name? I would probably say ah-stor-ee-ah if that makes sense  I think it’s really pretty with this pronunciation. I love the nickname possibility of [name_u]Story[/name_u] when she’s little.
Thank you!

I am very fond of [name_f]Astoria[/name_f] (A-stor-ria) but it’s also a place…that’s a turn-off for me.

A-store-ria - all a neighborhood in Queens NYC. I cannot picture it as a name for a person.

I would say “ah story ah.” I think it looks pretty, but all I can ever hear out of is, well…“a story, uh…” But I’m not big on [name_u]Story[/name_u] as a name either. So it’s just a strikeout for me. Sorry.

Sounds more like the name of a street than a name for a baby.

Prononciation: (ah-store-ree-ah)

I think it’s pretty. I’ve also been crushing on Aristi(e) for several months now, so maybe I like [name_f]Astoria[/name_f] because it is a bit similar. It definitely looks pretty, fairly easy to pronounce, and although [name_u]Story[/name_u] might not be everyone’s cup of tea, it’s a cute nn.

Goonies never say die. (:

I think of the neighborhood, or the hotel (Waldorf…) - which were named for the horribly wealthy Astor family. So it comes across as social-climby to me. As a [name_m]New[/name_m] Yorker (more or less) it also kind of seems like an attempt to sound cool by making an association with the big city.

Aesthetically, i totally get it. But it has too much else going on to really be usable, [name_f]IMO[/name_f].

There’s a restaurant where I lived called Astaria, prn. uh-star-ee-uh, so I might mispronounce it as that the first time, but then I’d guess uh-stor-ee-uh.

[name_f]Astoria[/name_f] is also a small Scandinavian town in Northwestern Oregon near the mouth of the [name_f]Columbia[/name_f] [name_u]River[/name_u].

[name_f]Astoria[/name_f] Greengrass was a character in the [name_m]Harry[/name_m] [name_m]Potter[/name_m] series. She was the Slytherin little sister of [name_f]Daphne[/name_f] Greengrass and later married [name_m]Draco[/name_m] Malfoy. I love the name!

I also think of [name_f]Astoria[/name_f], OR which is pronounced eh-STOR-ee-uh.

I like place names, so this works for me and it sounds lovely.

I personally really like [name_f]Astoria[/name_f] for the same reasons and love that story could be a go-to nn. Also, not being American personally I would not at all associate the name with a neighborhood in [name_m]New[/name_m] [name_m]York[/name_m] nor a small town in Oregon or even a hotel. I think the name has a great sound and look to it and as for meaning nameberry has it’s definition listed as “place name”, but online on other name websites indicate that [name_f]Astoria[/name_f] might mean “like a hawk” or “quail”.

I think [name_f]Astoria[/name_f] is pretty.

So what I’m getting is it looks pretty, is a place name, the nn [name_u]Story[/name_u] might not go over well with everyone (what does), and a character in [name_m]Harry[/name_m] [name_m]Potter[/name_m]. I agree it looks pretty and I find the pronunciation pretty straight forward. I was raised in the South and recently went to NYC for the first time a year ago so I never knew it was a neighborhood in Queens and I’m not sure if that’s a turn off or not. However, I’m okay with it being a “small Scandinavian town in Northwestern Oregon near the mouth of the [name_f]Columbia[/name_f] [name_u]River[/name_u].” - oboeplayer1 I love little place names like these.
Thanks everyone!

I’d pronounce it A-STORE-ee-yah, ‘a’ as in ‘apple’, if that helps. I love it, very formal and classy. And the nickname [name_u]Story[/name_u] is great!

I think of the Waldorf-[name_f]Astoria[/name_f] hotel. I also think of the Muppets. The two cranky old muppets in the balcony were Waldorf and Statler. Waldorf’s wife was [name_f]Astoria[/name_f].

If you love it, go for it. It may work better in a middle name spot.

I love it, and [name_u]Story[/name_u] is a great NM. I would pronounce it the same way too

[name_m]Draco[/name_m] Malfoy’s wife name in [name_m]Harry[/name_m] [name_m]Potter[/name_m]. [name_f]Astoria[/name_f] Malfoy nee Greengrass

[name_m]Ah[/name_m]-store-ee-uh

I like it a lot! And the nn [name_u]Story[/name_u] is gorgeous! I feel like if you don’t live in that place, it should be fine!

Thank you everyone! I added [name_f]Astoria[/name_f] to my list
