I have [name_f]Astrid[/name_f] and [name_f]Ingrid[/name_f] both on my list and I adore them.
My question is are they too close to be sisters?
My combos are [name_f]Astrid[/name_f] [name_u]Juniper[/name_u] [name_f]Claire[/name_f] and [name_f]Ingrid[/name_f] [name_f]Aurelia[/name_f] [name_f]Kate[/name_f].
The fact that they both end in the same sound does make them seem a bit too close for sisters. If you have any more kids, they would be the odd ones out.
I think they are probably too close for siblings for me, but I know others might do it, and I’d have no problem with that. If it was me and I loved them both that much, I might consider using one up front and the other as a middle. Since I like [name_f]Astrid[/name_f] a wee bit more than [name_f]Ingrid[/name_f], I would probably do something like [name_f]Astrid[/name_f] [name_u]Juniper[/name_u] [name_f]Claire[/name_f] and [name_f]Aurelia[/name_f] [name_f]Ingrid[/name_f] [name_f]Kate[/name_f].
They are very similar in sound, and creating a pattern like that could cause consternation later on if you wanted to have more kids. I like a previous poster’s suggestion of using one as a middle name and one as a first name. That way you still get to use both names, but not in a way that’s going to cause issues. I grew up with a name that was very similar to my sister’s, and I hated it. People always mixed the names up and when we were teenagers we each eschewed our respective given names in favour of nicknames to create a bit more difference.
I guess I’ll have to see how I can rework my list at some point. [name_f]Ingrid[/name_f] is just so pretty to me, but [name_f]Astrid[/name_f] is my favorite and I love the meaning.
FWIW, I know quite a few sibsets with the same ending of names: [name_f]Michelle[/name_f] and [name_f]Danielle[/name_f], [name_m]Jackson[/name_m] and [name_u]Emerson[/name_u], [name_f]Jessica[/name_f] and [name_f]Monica[/name_f], [name_m]Colton[/name_m] and [name_u]Peyton[/name_u], etc. I guess those kinds of sibsets never bothered me, but maybe [name_f]Astrid[/name_f] and [name_f]Ingrid[/name_f] is more noticeable because they’re less popular names.
Both names are classic Norse names and I don’t think they’re too similar at all. It would be like two sisters named [name_f]Margaret[/name_f] and [name_f]Mary[/name_f].
If you’re only going to have two kids, I think it’s a sweet connection and they’re absolutely fine together. Yes, they have similar endings but overall the sound of the names is not too similar. It’s just that that particular style of girl’s name is not particularly widely used in English-speaking countries; no one would bat an eyelid if two sisters’ names both ended in -ah or -ee sounds. Journalist [name_f]Ingrid[/name_f] Bettancourt has a sister called [name_f]Astrid[/name_f].
However, I do think that if you’re planning on having more than two kids, you’d probably need to give a third daughter another clearly Nordic/Germanic name, like [name_f]Liv[/name_f], [name_f]Saga[/name_f] or [name_f]Annika[/name_f]. To me, something like [name_f]Astrid[/name_f], [name_f]Ingrid[/name_f] and [name_f]Sophia[/name_f] would sound a bit odd.
They do sound similar, but they are rather different styles. So I think it could be pulled off. Mostly, I would put it down to your personal choice - whether you like having them sound similar or not.
I’m amazed I have found this post!! My name is [name_f]Ingrid[/name_f] and I’m considering [name_f]Astrid[/name_f] for my baby girl! [name_f]Do[/name_f] you think they’re too close for mother and daughter? xx
I think sisters are fine but would only cause problems with a third child. With a third I’d go for another Nordic name to go with the two sisters.
I dont think theyre too much alike, theyd make a lovely sibling set in my opinion
the only thing i’d worry about would be people questioning why so many norse names but it isnt a big deal
OP and @ihughes have you seen a movie (also a book) called White Oleander? The mom’s name is [name_f]Ingrid[/name_f] and daughter’s name is [name_f]Astrid[/name_f]. I don’t think the names are too close to each other but it did instantly make me think of the movie when I saw the names together. Seeing as no one else made the connection though perhaps it’s not a big concern to worry about.
