At a total loss...nothing feels right. :(

Expecting a girl and nothing feels right. We thought about [name_u]Vivian[/name_u] but thought it was too sophisticated, thought about [name_u]Emerson[/name_u] but maybe to masculine, thought about [name_f]Margo[/name_f] but I just don’t know. Nothing feels ‘right’.

My husband and I have been through, literally, thousands of names. We have lists and lists. Can’t agree on anything. At what point do you just open a book and pick the name at the top of the page? It’s making me depressed because no matter what we pick I feel like I won’t really love it.

Starting from scratch. Anybody have a beautiful girl name they just love? Please help. :frowning:

What type of name do you love? Maybe I can come up with some if you give a type? ex: whimsical, feminine, unisex, long, short, elegant etc.

I don’t know what your style is, but some of my favorites that I don’t hear very often are [name_f]Belle[/name_f], [name_f]Cambria[/name_f], [name_f]Cosette[/name_f], [name_f]Elodie[/name_f], [name_f]Ingrid[/name_f], [name_f]Linnaea[/name_f] ([name_f]Lin[/name_f]-NAY-uh), [name_f]Mairi[/name_f] ([name_f]MAR[/name_f]-ee), [name_f]Nessa[/name_f], and [name_u]Waverly[/name_u]. I also don’t know how you feel about nicknames, but I love [name_f]Cami[/name_f] for [name_f]Cambria[/name_f], [name_f]Elle[/name_f] for [name_f]Elodie[/name_f], [name_f]Indie[/name_f] for [name_f]Ingrid[/name_f], [name_f]Lina[/name_f] for [name_f]Linnaea[/name_f], and [name_u]Ari[/name_u] for [name_f]Mairi[/name_f]. Best of luck!

I’m sure in the end you’ll find a name you both love! Sometimes it’s hard to find a name because you can’t figure out your style. Or maybe you just don’t have one! I think you’re on the right path; perhaps you just need some inspiration!

Some of my favourites include [name_f]Lily[/name_f], [name_f]Josephine[/name_f], [name_f]Ada[/name_f]/[name_f]Adabelle[/name_f], [name_u]Evelyn[/name_u], [name_f]Sosie[/name_f], [name_f]Greta[/name_f], [name_f]Audrey[/name_f], [name_f]Nancy[/name_f], [name_f]Violet[/name_f], [name_f]Imogen[/name_f], [name_f]Alice[/name_f], [name_f]Sybil[/name_f]/[name_f]Sybella[/name_f], [name_f]Lucine[/name_f], & [name_f]Rose[/name_f].

I’m going to suggest [name_f]Cosima[/name_f]! This is a name with a lot of history but a playful and lilting sound. It brings up words like cosmopolitan - a citizen of the whole world, and cosmos - the beauty of the heavens. It has great nns - [name_f]Coco[/name_f] (like the esteemable [name_f]Chanel[/name_f]) or Cosy or even [name_f]Mimi[/name_f] or [name_f]Mia[/name_f]. [name_f]Cosima[/name_f] [name_u]Emerson[/name_u] is grand, as is [name_f]Cosima[/name_f] [name_u]Vivian[/name_u] - beauty, history, and playfulness all in one! Good luck!

Ps - [name_f]Cosima[/name_f] [name_u]Vivian[/name_u] [name_u]Emerson[/name_u] with the nn [name_m]Cove[/name_m] is awesome as well!

[name_f]Colette[/name_f]
[name_f]Aileen[/name_f]
[name_f]Aletta[/name_f]

I also think it can be fun to take the name meaning or a couple of letters of a name you like or if someone you’d like to honor and do some searching.

I agree with previous poster: find someone you’d like to honor, and find a name based off of that. It’ll introduce new meaning that will likely make you two and your baby feel a special connection to the name that you might not have otherwise.

I think [name_u]Vivian[/name_u] is beautiful, and not too fancyshmancy at all. [name_u]Vivian[/name_u] [name_u]Emerson[/name_u] is a beautiful name.

What is important to you in choosing a name? [name_f]Do[/name_f] you want to use names from your heritage (what heritage)? Are there any important people you want to honour, using their names or variants thereof? Inspirational “famous figures” or characters from books/TV/movies? Interests- e.g. names of musicians if you love music, a nature/plant name if you love gardening? [name_f]Do[/name_f] you want a name that’s historical or modern?

[name_f]Hope[/name_f] that’s given you something to think about  If you tell us more about what you’re looking for, we can come up with suggestions!

And for what it’s worth, [name_u]Vivian[/name_u] is a lovely name, definitely wearable and not too sophisticated at all. [name_f]Margo[/name_f] is lovely too. I’m not really a fan of [name_u]Emerson[/name_u] myself.

I agree that using a name that already means something to you as a starting point may help. Pretty much all of the names on my list come from people in our family. Maybe a dig into your family history or heritage will help too.

You don’t need more name suggestions - you’ve plowed through thousands already, and you have some good options on your short list. What you need is a fresh perspective.

I would suggest not looking at names or trying to choose for a period of time. A weekend? A week? A month? [name_m]How[/name_m] long do you need to clear out the cobwebs?

I would also suggest coming at this from a different angle. [name_m]Don[/name_m]'t try to find the needle in the haystack. Instead, think about what you love about the names you like and what makes them meaningful. Is there family connection? Is it the sound or the style? Figure out the whys of the names you like, then you’ll have an easier time figuring out the which.

[name_u]Emerson[/name_u] and [name_u]Vivian[/name_u] are unisex names and [name_f]Margo[/name_f] is without frills. Both [name_u]Vivian[/name_u] and [name_f]Margo[/name_f] have a classic feel, even though they aren’t exactly classic names. None of these names end with “a”, so you seem to be leaning to something that sounds more offbeat.

The name that reminds me of [name_u]Emerson[/name_u], [name_u]Vivian[/name_u] and [name_f]Margo[/name_f] altogether is… [name_u]Morgan[/name_u]!

If you like [name_u]Vivian[/name_u] you might like [name_f]Viva[/name_f]? I think it is so cute and you could even pair it with [name_f]Margo[/name_f] or [name_u]Emerson[/name_u], [name_f]Viva[/name_f] [name_f]Margo[/name_f] or [name_f]Viva[/name_f] [name_u]Emerson[/name_u]

Oh! I would like to add [name_f]Aviva[/name_f] as well, [name_f]Aviva[/name_f] [name_f]Margo[/name_f] or [name_f]Aviva[/name_f] [name_u]Emerson[/name_u]

I agree that taking a week off might help. But I think [name_u]Vivian[/name_u] with nickname [name_f]Vivi[/name_f] is a great name, maybe [name_u]Vivian[/name_u] [name_f]Rose[/name_f] or [name_u]Vivian[/name_u] [name_f]Alice[/name_f]? [name_f]Violet[/name_f], [name_f]Clara[/name_f], [name_f]Lucy[/name_f], and [name_f]Lillian[/name_f] are other first name options to consider.
If you want to go the name meaning route, nameberry has a good search function where you can search by meaning. Good luck!

I am in the same position. With our first daughter, we always knew what her name would be ([name_f]Elena[/name_f]). We are expecting girl #2 and do have a list, but are still on the fence.

I found it easier to list types of names you [name_f]DO[/name_f] NOT like and work backwards. My example is that I do not care for names on the current top 100 list, taht are one syllable, that are “word names” and that are trendy. I prefer more classic names that are professional, can carry her through life, is unique, yet recognizable, that does not start with a specific letter. SOLELY my preference, but has given us something to work with.
