My favourite baby name for a boy is August and my husband’s is Atlas. We’re pretty good at compromising and we both like each other’s choices- we just each like our’s more. Usually we’d just plan to save one for a sibling, especially since we’re not aggressively passionate about keeping names gendered. However, I feel like the names are way too similar as siblings to use both. We actually liked Atticus too but it hasn’t made any of our final lists for that reason- it got edged out by these two.
I grew up with a totally different name from my sister (and now my sister in law) and our mom’s mix up our names when talking to/about us all the name. I can’t imagine how much worse it would be if the names has alot of the same letters and sounds. Then again, maybe if it’s bound to happen anyways it doesn’t really matter.
They are very similar, but if they’re genuinely your joint favourite names and nothing else would make you both happier to use, I don’t think their similarity should be a deal breaker!
Having said that, you’d have time before a sibling came along for some different names to become favourites - that happens, especially with a few years to mull things over.
I don’t think they’re too similar for siblings. [name_u]Atlas[/name_u] and [name_m]Atticus[/name_m] definitely, but not these. They’ll mostly be said together when they’re young and less so as they grow, so if you love both I say go for it
They are somewhat similar, but in other ways totally different. If those are the names you really love, I would go ahead. [name_u]Atlas[/name_u] does seem a hard name for a boy if he turns out to be a non-athletic person, but maybe these days it doesn’t matter.
[name_u]August[/name_u] and [name_u]Atlas[/name_u] are gorgeous and I think they work well together. [name_f]My[/name_f] cousins’ names both have a prominent U sound and end in a ee sound and it’s never been a problem
I think they are very similar but maybe not too similar. If you think they are then maybe use one as a first or middle for this baby then use the other one as a first or middle for the next baby. For example…
August Finlay and Reuben Atlas
Or
Finlay August and Atlas Reuben
Or
Atlas Reuben and Finlay August
Or
Reuben Atlas and August Finlay
You get it? Or you could just debate until you find the one you prefer
[name_u]August[/name_u] and [name_u]Atlas[/name_u] pair so well together!
Growing up, my family had the same problem about name mix-ups, but it happened equally often with the similar names (both starting with E) and distinctive ones (E and H). It seems like it might just be a mom thing.
I second everything @EdgeOfTheMeadow said! They’re similar in some ways, but honestly they just seem really well matched, it’s more their similar vibe that makes them feel close, which isn’t a bad thing at all! [name_m]Just[/name_m] a very cohesive sibset.
