Atlas

I keep seeing little babies all over Instagram named [name_m]Atlas[/name_m] so it must be catching on! I really love it but my partner needs convincing. I love the adventurous/travel association rather than the Greek mythology. I think we will stay with [name_m]Otis[/name_m] but I aminterested as to everyone’s personal thoughts on the name [name_m]Atlas[/name_m].

I like it, but I sort of can’t picture calling someone [name_m]Atlas[/name_m]. If it’s gaining rapidly in popularity, that would also put me off. I prefer [name_m]Otis[/name_m].

I’m torn, because I like the sound and understand why it’s appealing, but like other mythology names it also has a bit of baggage and grandiosity. It seems to me completely like an “Instagram name” that fits perfectly with a certain aesthetic/lifestyle; in the meantime, great-grandma is totally perplexed. None of that is necessarily a dealbreaker for me, but I would worry that it could seem dated rather than classic down the line.

I don’t quite get the appeal of [name_m]Atlas[/name_m], mainly because it’s too much of a noun for me. Like “honey, can you grab the atlas?” Depending on your pronounciation, it could also end with an -ass sound which should be avoided.

I really like [name_m]Otis[/name_m] though.

I really like the name in and of itself, but the strong association with a deity who was forced to hold up the heavens (or celestial spheres) would dissuade me from using it. I feel the same way about the name [name_m]Icarus[/name_m].

I was feeling the same way too. I think it will date. I guess I like it as its a little bit different in a world where the same 20 names keep getting recycled in my hipster neighbourhood! Thanks for the feedback so far.
